Prologue - Morning Coffee
The queue moved slowly, but Ember didn’t mind, her attention drifting instead to the television mounted high on the wall behind the counter, where the morning news played to a room that was only half listening.
“...we are not arguing against the existence of supernatural beings,” the woman on screen was saying, her tone measured but firm, the kind of calm that came from repeating the same argument too many times.“We are arguing against a system that removes choice from one side entirely. Humans are being asked to accept disruption to their lives with no say in the matter, while the supernatural party retains control throughout the process.”
Ember shifted her weight slightly, adjusting her grip on her bag as she listened without fully committing to it, the words familiar enough that they no longer demanded her full attention.
It wasn’t new. None of it was.
The system had been in place for years now, ever since the war, ever since the moment the supernatural population had stepped out of the shadows and into public life with enough leverage that governments had been forced to negotiate rather than deny, and although the details had shifted over time, the core of it remained unchanged.
If a werewolf claimed you, that was it.
Not final, not binding without question, but enough that your life paused while the process played out, enough that your choices narrowed whether you liked it or not.
Around her, people moved as they always did, conversations continuing, orders being called, the normal rhythm of a London morning carrying on as though the topic on screen was no more significant than the weather forecast that would follow it.
That was the strange part, how normal it all felt.
There had been a time when people made eye contact freely, when a glance was just a glance and not something that carried potential consequence, but now there was hesitation built into it, subtle but present, an awareness that lingered in the way people moved through each other’s space.
Some avoided it entirely - eyes down, interactions brief, distance maintained wherever possible.
Others leaned into it.....
She had seen it often enough - people who held eye contact just a little too long, who sought it out rather than avoided it, as though hoping something would happen, as though the idea of a fated bond was something worth chasing rather than something that might disrupt everything they had already built.
Ember fell somewhere in the middle.
She didn’t avoid it, but she didn’t seek it out either. To her, it simply was.
A possibility, not a certainty. Something that might happen, or might not, and either way, there didn’t seem much point in shaping her life around it.
“Next.”
She stepped forward automatically, placing her order without thinking too much about it, her attention still half on the conversation behind her, half on the day ahead, and by the time she stepped back out onto the street, coffee in hand, the news segment had already moved on to something else.
