"Interesting story of internecine strife between 2 families. Very eventful and fast paced. Evan could have saved himself a lot of trouble if he had completed the mate bond sooner. Expensive lessons in strategy will hopefully prepare them both for future problems."
Who knew Lycans came with an off switch?
"Let's start with a couple of things first, to better explain what's to come. In the power rankings for this story there are humans, then Werewolves, then Lycans. The MMC and FMC are listed as Lycan Werewolves, which sounds redundant but works for the story for the most part, except when it doesn't...more on that to come. A human might surprise a werewolf and live to tell the tale, not so much with a lycan. On to the review, This is a story about basically a Hatfield and McCoy feud. An Alpha was about to mate his chosen Luna when she finds her fated mate, so she leaves the alpha who decides it was wrong of her and vows vengeance. Not an unknown response but normally canon says Fated mates overrule chosens. The rejected alpha commits suicide over the loss of his chosen Luna and the son, Ian, vows revenge on the family. That's the premise. The fated mates have a son, Eric, who finds his fated mate, Sarah, but she's half human. The Council rejects the idea of a half human mate so Eric rejects the pack, puts his Beta in position of alpha marries his mate and has a little girl, Anna. Ian's bounty hunters keep trying to find Eric and Sarah but eventually corner them and run them off the road killing both of them but Anna gets away. This causes Anna to grow up in the human foster care system with the new name of Rachel, until aging out at 18. We are told at this point that an organization known as the Wolf Protection agency knows what Rachel is and has been protecting her since her parents death. Rachel meets her fated mate pretty quickly after turning 18 and here's where things go a bit awry, Rachel's fated mate is Evan, the son of Alpha Ian but he doesn't know who Rachel is. For some reason Evan leaves his mate in place to talk to his father, this goes against canon as alpha mates don't leave their prospective Luna's alone after finding them. During this absence two things happen, Rachel finds out her history from the Social worker who is also part of the WPA and then tells Evan via text who she actually is, a misunderstanding causes a divide between them, which causes Rachel to Reject him via text...except it doesn't work that way, it has to be done in person, and then Rachel gets attacked by a human. Now the third part of that event is both completely unnecessary to the story and resulted in the author adding a second tag to the story as that wasn't listed before. This is where the title comes into play: When asked how a lycan could be assaulted by a human and the human be both successful and not die as a result I was told...it's part of the story, and that Rachel wasn't a lycan yet...except her wolf said she was when they shifted. Who knew you could turn the lycan switch off and on. The human was a random rapist, it didn't add to the story nor was it necessary. The proceeding events happen either way, so I take offense to an author forcing an onscreen rape element to a story both without listing it and causing unnecessary trauma to a girl who has already too much of it. Now the story progresses, Evan drives all night to find Rachel right after the rape and attempted murder and gets her to a hospital where she eventually recovers and wakes up. Nothing is mentioned about the assault going forward except the trauma Rachel suffers as a result. This sequence flows through most of the book from when she met Evan. She has a good thing happen, followed immediately by a bad thing. Rinse and repeat a few times and all I can think is..the girl just can't catch a break. It's a decent story all in all, but the author seems to go out of their way to make it much more complicated then it needs to be, IMO. It follows canon until it doesn't, in reading it I got the impression that the identity of Rachel/Anna as a lycan was getting in the way of some of the story elements so the author flipped the lycan off switch when it needed to and then turned it back on for other things. To be fair, after a couple of back and forths with the author, they did add the missing tag to the story. "
