Chapter 1

“Where Silence Speaks”

The temple was always quiet at sunrise.

Soft chants echoed through the stone halls, and the scent of incense lingered in the air.

Arjun came there every morning.

Not to pray.

Just to breathe.

He liked the stillness.

The way no one asked questions.

The way nothing demanded anything from him.

“First time here?”

Arjun turned slightly.

A man stood near the entrance, holding a small bundle of incense sticks, his expression calm but curious.

“No,” Arjun replied softly. “I come here often.”

The man smiled.

“Then I’m the one who’s new.”

His name was Vihaan.

They didn’t talk much after that.

Some mornings, they just sat on opposite sides of the courtyard.

Listening.

Existing.

Other days, Vihaan would quietly sit beside him.

Not too close.

Not too far.

“You don’t pray,” Vihaan said one morning.

Arjun shook his head.

“I don’t know what to ask for.”

Vihaan thought for a moment.

“Then don’t ask. Just stay.”

Arjun glanced at him.

It sounded simple.

But it stayed with him.

Days turned into something like a routine.

Not planned.

Not spoken.

Just—

understood.

Until one morning—

Vihaan wasn’t there.

Arjun told himself it didn’t matter.

People come.

People go.

But the silence felt different.

Heavier.

The next day—

still nothing.

By the third day—

Arjun found himself looking toward the entrance more than usual.

And then—

“Did you miss me?”

Arjun turned quickly.

Vihaan stood there, slightly out of breath, a small smile on his lips.

“…You came back,” Arjun said quietly.

Vihaan walked closer.

“I had to go home for a few days.”

A pause.

“I didn’t think you’d notice.”

Arjun looked away.

“I didn’t.”

Vihaan smiled softly.

“You did.”

The truth lingered between them.

“…Why do you come here?” Arjun asked after a moment.

Vihaan looked around the temple.

“It’s peaceful,” he said.

Then, after a small pause—

“And now… you’re here.”

Arjun’s breath caught slightly.

“I don’t talk much,” he said quietly.

“I know.”

“I don’t know how to… keep people.”

Vihaan stepped a little closer.

“You don’t have to,” he said gently. “Just don’t push them away.”

The words felt familiar.

Comforting.

A soft breeze passed through the courtyard, carrying the scent of incense between them.

Arjun hesitated.

Then—

“…Will you keep coming back?”

Vihaan met his gaze.

“Yes,” he said simply.

No big promise.

No dramatic words.

Just certainty.

And somehow—

that was enough.

That morning, they didn’t sit apart.

They sat side by side.

In silence.

But this time—

it didn’t feel empty.

It felt shared.

And for the first time—

Arjun realized…

sometimes, silence doesn’t mean being alone.

Sometimes—

it means someone chose to stay with you in it.
