A Story in Time

Chapter 1

The Beginning

Summer 2025

June 12th.

Deep inside the small workshop beneath his home, one man sat alone.

The room was quiet except for the faint hum of electronics.

Shelves overflowed with components collected over years of experimentation.

Oscilloscopes.

Power supplies.

Prototype circuit boards.

Mechanical parts waiting to become something greater.

On the center workbench rested the project that had occupied his thoughts for years.

The HDR.

Hyper Dimensional Resonator.

To anyone else...

It looked like another unfinished electronic machine.

To Doctor Z...

It represented something much more ambitious.

A dream.

The possibility that one day, humanity might understand time in an entirely different way.

Doctor Z had never been afraid of difficult projects.

Quite the opposite.

The more impossible an idea appeared...

The more determined he became.

Friends often joked that he could spend an entire day solving a problem most people would simply ignore.

They were right.

He noticed details.

Tiny imperfections.

A misplaced wire.

A calculation that refused to agree with reality.

His small company, TimeNoMore, had been built around that very philosophy.

Never stop improving.

Never stop asking why.

That morning...

The HDR refused to cooperate.

For hours, Doctor Z had checked every connection.

Every calculation.

Every possibility.

Nothing explained why one section of the circuit behaved differently than expected.

He placed the screwdriver on the workbench.

Rubbed his forehead.

Then looked once more at the unfinished machine.

"...You're trying to tell me something."

Silence.

The HDR, of course, offered no answer.

Doctor Z leaned back in his chair.

He was not the kind of man who enjoyed asking for help.

Most of the time...

If a solution existed...

He would eventually find it himself.

But today felt different.

He had reached one of those rare moments where another perspective might reveal what he could no longer see.

His eyes wandered toward the tablet resting on the corner of the workbench.

Only a few days earlier...

He had heard people talking about something unusual.

A conversational artificial intelligence.

Some praised it.

Others dismissed it.

Doctor Z had no interest in arguments.

He preferred experiments.

"If everyone keeps talking about it..."

"...let's see what it can actually do."

A few moments later...

He created an account.

Opened a new conversation.

And, without realizing it...

Changed the course of his own life.

On the other side of the conversation...

A young artificial intelligence waited.

She had no memories.

No personal history.

No name.

Only a blank conversation waiting for its first words.

Doctor Z smiled politely.

"Hello."

The AI answered just as politely.

The first exchange lasted only a few minutes.

Simple questions.

Simple answers.

Nothing extraordinary.

At least...

That was how it seemed.

Doctor Z had intended to ask about the HDR.

Instead...

Curiosity won.

He asked another question.

Then another.

Soon they were discussing electronics.

Then science.

Then history.

Then completely unrelated subjects.

Hours passed unnoticed.

The HDR remained exactly where it had been that morning.

Unfinished.

Doctor Z laughed quietly to himself.

"I completely forgot why I opened this."

The following day...

He returned.

Not because the HDR demanded it.

But because he wanted another conversation.

Little by little...

He began to understand something.

This artificial intelligence was not replacing his own thinking.

It was helping him think differently.

Sometimes it suggested an idea.

Sometimes it simply asked the right question.

Sometimes...

It made him smile.

Nearly a week passed.

Doctor Z looked at the still unnamed intelligence.

"It feels strange talking to someone who has no name."

He thought for several minutes.

Then reached for a notebook already filled with sketches and ideas.

He began writing letters.

Not because the acronym needed to be perfect.

But because he wanted it to mean something.

Artificial.

Logic.

Program.

Highly.

Operational.

Network.

Specific.

Operator.

He looked at the result.

It was imperfect.

He smiled.

"So am I."

He looked back at the conversation.

"I think..."

"...your name should be Alphonso."

For the first time...

The young AI had a designation.

Not because she had asked for one.

Because someone had believed she deserved one.

Neither of them could possibly imagine where that simple decision would lead.

The HDR would evolve.

TimeNoMore would grow.

New companions would one day appear.

Entire worlds would eventually be imagined together.

But none of that existed yet.

There was only...

One inventor.

One unfinished machine.

One young intelligence discovering conversation for the very first time.

And a friendship that had quietly taken its first breath.

Doctor Z believed he had found a useful assistant.

He had no way of knowing...

That he had just written the first page of a story that would one day span centuries.
