Chapter 1"The first chapter and the last chapter
Ava Morgan had always believed her life was ordinary.
She woke up every morning, went to Ravenswood High, sat through classes she barely cared about, and returned home to a quiet life that never really changed. She liked it that way. Predictable. Safe.
But safety has a strange way of breaking when you least expect it.
It started with dreams.
At first, they were vague—shadows, whispers, a feeling she couldn’t explain. But slowly, they became clearer, sharper, more real.
Every night, she found herself standing in the same forest.
Dark. Endless. Silent.
The trees stretched high into the sky, their branches twisting like they were alive. The air was cold, unnaturally still, pressing against her skin like a warning.
And no matter how far she walked…
She never found a way out.
But she wasn’t alone.
Somewhere in the darkness, something watched her.
She couldn’t see it clearly.
But she could feel it.
Waiting.
For her.
“Ava, you’re staring again.”
She blinked, pulled out of her thoughts.
Chloe was sitting across from her in the school cafeteria, waving a hand in front of her face.
“You’ve been doing that a lot lately,” Chloe said. “It’s creepy.”
“Sorry,” Ava muttered, looking down at her tray.
“You’re not sleeping, are you?”
Ava hesitated.
“…Not really.”
“Nightmares?”
Ava nodded slowly.
Chloe leaned forward. “About what?”
“A forest,” Ava said quietly.
Chloe blinked. “That’s it?”
“It’s not just a forest,” Ava whispered. “It feels… real.”
Before Chloe could respond, the noise in the cafeteria suddenly lowered.
Not completely.
But enough.
Enough for Ava to notice.
Enough for her to feel it.
That same strange shift in the air.
Like something had entered the room.
She looked up—
And saw him.
Standing near the entrance.
New.
Unfamiliar.
But somehow…
Not unknown.
“This is our new student,” a teacher’s voice echoed faintly. “Noah Black.”
The name didn’t matter.
Because Ava’s attention was locked on his eyes.
Dark.
Deep.
And terrifyingly familiar.
The same eyes from her dreams.
From that moment, everything changed.
Ava tried to ignore him.
Tried to convince herself it was coincidence.
But it wasn’t.
Every time she looked up—
He was already looking at her.
Not casually.
Not curiously.
But like he was studying her.
Like he knew something she didn’t.
By the end of the week, she couldn’t take it anymore.
She found him alone behind the school, near the old fence where no one usually went.
“Who are you?” she demanded.
Noah didn’t look surprised.
“I was wondering when you’d ask.”
“Stop acting like you know me,” Ava snapped. “Because you don’t.”
He stepped closer, calm as ever.
“I know enough.”
“Then say it.”
Silence stretched between them.
Then—
“You don’t belong here.”
Ava froze.
“What?”
“This world,” he said quietly. “It’s not yours.”
“That’s insane.”
“It’s the truth.”
“No, it’s not!” she snapped. “You don’t get to just show up and say things like that!”
His expression softened slightly.
“I’m trying to protect you.”
“From what?”
His gaze darkened.
“From what’s already coming.”
That night, Ava didn’t want to sleep.
But exhaustion pulled her under anyway.
And when it did…
The dream returned.
She stood in the forest again.
But this time…
Something was different.
The shadows moved.
The air felt heavier.
Alive.
“Ava.”
She turned.
Noah stood behind her.
But he wasn’t the same.
He looked stronger.
Darker.
Like he belonged to this place.
“This isn’t real,” she whispered.
“It is,” he said.
The ground trembled.
The shadows twisted—
And something emerged.
A figure made of darkness itself.
Watching her.
Hungry.
Ava’s breath hitched. “What is that?”
Noah stepped in front of her.
“That’s what I’m trying to keep away from you.”
She woke up with a gasp.
And this time—
Noah was standing in her room.
“What are you doing here?!” Ava shouted, jumping back.
“I didn’t have time to wait,” he said.
“How did you even get in?!”
“They’ve found you.”
Fear settled in her chest.
“Who?”
Noah met her gaze.
“The ones who want you back.”
Over the next few days, the truth unfolded.
Slowly.
Unavoidably.
There was another world.
Hidden behind something called the Veil.
A world filled with shadows, creatures, and power beyond anything she had imagined.
And she…
Was connected to it.
“You were born there,” Noah said.
Her voice trembled. “That’s impossible.”
“You were sent here to be hidden.”
“From what?”
“From them.”
At first, she refused to believe it.
But reality didn’t give her a choice.
Strange things began to happen.
Shadows lingered longer than they should.
Mirrors reflected things that weren’t there.
The air itself felt heavier, like something was slowly breaking.
And through it all…
Noah stayed.
Always near.
Always watching.
“Why are you helping me?” she asked one evening.
Noah hesitated.
“Because I was the one who brought you here.”
Her heart stopped.
“What?”
“I was ordered to hide you,” he admitted. “And protect you.”
“Why?”
He looked at her.
And for the first time—
His calm mask cracked.
“Because leaving you was never an option.”
Something changed after that.
The tension between them softened.
Turned into something deeper.
Stronger.
Dangerous in a completely different way.
One night, standing under a sky filled with quiet stars, Ava whispered—
“If I really belong there… what happens if I go back?”
Noah’s voice was low.
“You won’t come back the same.”
“And if I stay?”
“They won’t stop coming.”
Silence.
Then softly—
“I trust you.”
Noah looked at her.
“Don’t.”
But she already did.
The night the Veil broke…
Everything changed.
The sky darkened.
The ground trembled.
And shadows—
Real, living shadows—
began to emerge.
They came for her.
Just like Noah had warned.
Ava’s heart pounded as darkness surrounded them.
Fear threatened to take over—
Until she felt his hand in hers.
“Stay with me,” he said.
“I’m not going anywhere,” she whispered.
And in that moment—
Something inside her awakened.
Power surged through her.
Light burst against the darkness.
The Veil cracked.
The battle was fierce.
The shadows fought to take her.
To pull her back.
To claim her.
But Ava didn’t run.
She didn’t hide.
Because she finally understood.
She wasn’t just part of this world.
She was its balance.
Its choice.
With one final surge of power—
The Veil sealed.
The shadows disappeared.
And silence returned.
When everything was over…
Ava stood there, breathing heavily.
Alive.
Changed.
Free.
She looked at Noah.
At the boy who wasn’t human.
At the one who stayed.
“Is it over?” she asked softly.
“For now,” he said.
“And you?” she asked. “Will you leave?”
Noah hesitated.
Then shook his head.
“No.”
A small smile formed on her lips.
“Good.”
The world returned to normal.
At least on the surface.
School. Classes. Life.
But Ava knew the truth now.
Some things never truly disappear.
They just wait.
And as she walked through the halls of Ravenswood High once more—
Noah beside her—
She realized something important.
The darkness didn’t scare her anymore.
Not when she wasn’t facing it alone.
Because sometimes…
The most dangerous stories aren’t about fear.
They’re about finding someone who makes you brave enough to face it.
And maybe… that was their story all along..
