The Lion's Den

The heel of Elena’s left pump clicked with a sickening, hollow rhythm against the cracked sidewalk. It was her only pair of professional shoes, and the rubber sole was dangerously close to peeling off entirely. She pulled her thin coat tighter against the biting wind and stared up at the towering glass monolith of Vance Enterprises. She needed this job. More accurately, her bank account—which currently boasted a grand total of twelve dollars and forty-three cents—needed this job. Elena had spent the last three months drowning. She had scrolled through endless job boards, sent out hundreds of resumes, and faced a mountain of automated rejection emails. Her background was a patchwork of retail gigs and administrative temp work. No one wanted to hire a girl with grit but no corporate pedigree. But yesterday, a miracle happened. She had received a call from Vance Enterprises for an immediate interview for the Personal Assistant position to the CEO. She knew it was a long shot, but she was organized, she was desperate, and she was willing to work herself to the bone. Elena smoothed down her thrift-store blazer, took a deep breath, and pushed through the heavy glass revolving doors. The lobby was a world of sleek white marble, brushed steel, and intimidatingly beautiful people in tailored suits. “You must be Elena Ruiz,” a woman at the reception desk said without looking up from her curved monitor. Her voice was as cold as the aesthetic of the office. “Yes, I’m here for the interview with Mr. Vance,” Elena said, offering a polite smile that went entirely unnoticed. The receptionist finally looked up. Her eyes swept over Elena’s cheap blazer and scuffed shoes with blatant disdain. She pressed a button on her desk phone. “Mr. Vance, your 10:00 AM is here.” A pause. Then, a sharp, irritated voice crackled through the speaker. “Send her in. She’s already two minutes late.” Elena checked her watch. It was exactly 10:00 AM. Her heart hammered against her ribs as she was waved toward a massive set of double mahogany doors at the end of the hall. She pushed them open and stepped inside. The office was vast, dominated by floor-to-ceiling windows that showcased the sprawling city skyline. But the view wasn’t what stole Elena’s breath. It was the man sitting behind the monolithic obsidian desk. Alexander Vance was, quite simply, the most striking man Elena had ever seen. He had sharp, chiseled features, thick dark hair swept back from his forehead, and eyes the color of a stormy sea. He wore a bespoke charcoal suit that screamed power and wealth. He didn’t look up when she entered. He was aggressively signing a stack of documents, the nib of his fountain pen scratching loudly against the paper. “Sit,” he commanded, his voice a deep, gravelly baritone. Elena sat in the leather chair opposite him, keeping her spine perfectly straight. She placed her plastic folder on her lap. “Good morning, Mr. Vance. I’m Elena Ruiz. It is a pleasure to—” “I didn’t ask for a monologue, Miss Ruiz,” Alexander interrupted, still not looking at her. He flipped a page aggressively. “I asked you to sit. Your resume says you worked at a boutique bookstore for two years. Why did you leave?” Elena swallowed the spike of anxiety in her throat. “The business went under, sir. The owner retired.” “And before that, a receptionist at a gym?” He finally looked up. His gaze was paralyzing. His eyes were cold, calculating, and entirely unimpressed. Elena felt exposed, as if he could see straight through her cheap clothes to the crushing debt and desperation underneath. “Yes, sir. I managed the schedules for twenty trainers and handled all client accounts,” she said, keeping her voice steady despite the tremor in her hands. Alexander tossed her resume onto the desk like it was a piece of trash. “You have no corporate experience. You have no high-level executive training. Frankly, Miss Ruiz, you are completely unqualified to breathe the air in this office, let alone manage my professional life.” The blunt cruelty of his words stung like a physical slap. Elena felt the familiar burn of tears at the back of her eyes, but she refused to let them fall. Not in front of this arrogant, insufferable man. Anger, hot and sharp, replaced her fear. “Mr. Vance,” Elena said, her voice dropping an octave, ringing with a fierce clarity she didn’t know she possessed. “I may not have a degree from an Ivy League school or a background in corporate politics. But what I do have is an unmatched work ethic. I am highly adaptable, I learn faster than anyone you have ever hired, and quite frankly, I am too desperate for this job to ever give you anything less than absolute perfection. You can hire another carbon-copy assistant who will cry the first time you snap at them, or you can hire me—someone who actually needs to be here and will deliver results.” Alexander paused. For the first time since she had walked into the room, his eyes truly focused on her. He leaned back in his leather chair, tapping a finger against his jaw, studying her. The silence in the room grew heavy, suffocating. “Desperate, are we?” he asked, a cruel, mocking smirk playing at the edge of his lips. “Motivated,” Elena countered. Alexander looked at her for another long, agonizing minute. “My last three assistants quit within a week. I am demanding, impatient, and I do not tolerate mistakes. If you fail to anticipate my needs, you are gone. Do you understand?” Elena nodded, her heart leaping into her throat. “I understand.” “Good,” Alexander said, standing up. He was tall, well over six feet, and his physical presence was overwhelming. He grabbed a thick binder from his desk and thrust it toward her. “This is my schedule, my contact list, and the protocols for my daily operations. Memorize it. You start now. Get me an espresso. Black. No sugar. If it is lukewarm when it hits my desk, you’re fired.” Elena took the heavy binder, her hands steady now. She looked him dead in the eye. “I’ll have it on your desk in three minutes, Mr. Vance.” She turned on her heel and walked out of the lion’s den, ignoring the click of her broken shoe. She had the job. Now, she just had to survive the boss.
