Mysterious and Well Written
"Hey there K.B! When I do reviews, I like to focus on three major categories first: Characters, Pacing/Flow, and Writing Style/Prose. Characters (& Dialogue Notes): So far, I really like the characters. Ayana is definitely the most interesting one to me at the moment. You did a great job introducing Rox as the main character. Through the way the supporting characters talk about him, it becomes easy to understand his background, who he used to be, and the kind of person he is now without needing heavy exposition. The dialogue in general was very strong in my opinion. A lot of Silas’s lines had just the right amount of bite to them — the kind that makes you pause as a reader and go, “Oop... 👀”. As for Ayana, I’m extremely curious about what’s going on with her and these split personalities. After she mentions the sleepwalking, you initially think, “Oh okay, that explains it,” but then seeing Roma appear in broad daylight with Rox in the forest completely shifts things again. Your portrayal of both Ayana and Roma is done very well. They genuinely feel like two different people rather than simply one character “acting different.” Overall, you did a great job establishing the hierarchy and dynamics of the story through character interactions and dialogue alone. Pacing/Flow: The pacing of the story is very well done. Starting directly in the action was a strong choice because it immediately hooks the reader and creates curiosity. It makes you instantly wonder, “What exactly did he do to end up here?” His reaction to being sent to the Crown only builds on that intrigue. Nothing in the story felt rushed, but at the same time, it also never felt like I was being dragged through unnecessary scenes or information. Even though the story opens in the middle of action, the pacing is controlled enough that I never felt lost or overwhelmed. The flashback scene was also effective. It gives important context to the scar Silas mentioned earlier while simultaneously adding even more weight to Roma bringing it up later. That moment had extra tension because of the groundwork already established beforehand. Overall, the story flows naturally. Every piece of information feels like it builds onto the last without becoming an info dump. There wasn’t really a moment where the story lagged or felt bloated with unnecessary details. Style/Prose: Rain and Thunder is outside of my usual genre preferences, but honestly, I enjoyed it far more than a lot of stories I’ve read within this genre. The writing itself is very engaging. The dialogue especially carries a perfect level of drama and tension that keeps you reading like “👀🍿🍿🍿”. The only thing I consistently noticed throughout the prose was a handful of minor grammar and spelling errors here and there. Most of them are very small and would be easy to revise during editing. For example, in Chapter 1: “Immediately his name ....... with quiet murmurs” I think adding “and” after the comma and before “the hall” would help the sentence flow more naturally and connect the second thought better. There were a few similar moments where a small missing word like “a,” “and,” or another connectors slightly interrupted the flow of the sentence. I also noticed a couple minor spelling issues, such as: “The room was quiet deafening” which I believe was meant to be: "quite deafening.” But overall, these were all minor issues rather than major distractions. The actual storytelling, dialogue, and intrigue of the narrative were strong enough that they kept me fully engaged throughout. I will definitely be staying tuned to read more and find out what happens next! "
