AUTHOR’S STATEMENT

Hello. My name is Louie Avian (Of course that is just my pen name) the author.

I started writing this book in 2020 when I was 17 years old and completed it in 2021 when I was 18 years old. I have edited it ever since then to make it more appealing although truth be told the story only gets better in the later chapters. I swear l tried my level best not to make it a dragging story but because of the young age and lack of experience, this is the best I could come up with. I tried to change a few things but then I realized they were important for character development. I sincerely request and urge you to read to the end and give me your sincere feelings and thoughts. I can’t and won’t blame you if you read it in bits but just please give it a chance. Thank you. I welcome all feedback on all my social media platforms including my email. Thank you.

ABSTRACT

Have you ever been there and asked yourself one simple but very hard question to answer? The question is “WHAT IS LOVE?”

Each and every one of us has a different answer to that question. Some may simply say that it is when you want to be with someone for the rest of your life. Some may say that it’s a heart’s decision to one person liking. Many may say that it’s just about marriage, having kids and growing old together and in a way they are all right. But have you ever really taken time just to understand what that feeling actually enfolds all together. In what shades does love exist? What colors does it have?

Well if you are interested, this book might be of help to you. Now let me tell you my definition of love. It’s an extraordinary feeling that puts one in a position of doing anything just in its name regardless the cost. It is a feeling that demands sacrifice, patience and letting go. It is a feeling that demands you to give your all and expect nothing in return. Of course am talking about romantic love, the intimate feeling between two people.

This story is about Paul and Julian who become best friends and soon realize that their friendship had evolved into something more.

Let’s dive into their story and the end you will ask yourself if you have ever been in love

ENJOY

CHAPTER 1

Paul was a young man who had potential and by the looks of it he had a bright future ahead of him. He was intelligent and was always up for the challenge. He wanted to be a lawyer.

Julian on the other hand was a young man who had dreamt of roaming the skies as a pilot and aviation engineer. He put a lot of efforts and never gave up on his studies.

The two of them had joined the same high school with Julian in a science program while Paul was in an Arts program. The only class they had together was ICT.

The day they met was quite not expected as they both wanted the same computer;

Julian: Excuse me l was here first.

Paul: And so.

Julian: Pick yourself up and find somewhere else to sit.

Paul: And if l refuse?

Julian: You know am trying to be as polite as I can to you but l just realized some people don’t deserve our time to be wasted on them. Go ahead eat the seat if you want.

Never in his life had Paul been spoken to with such arrogance and so as he watched Julian walk to the far end computer, he was amazed by his boldness.

This was not going to be the only encounter they were going to have. Many more students joined the ICT class and soon there was a deficit in the lab so the students had to share the computers, two students per computer.

The following day, there was another ICT lesson and this time Julian was seated first on the same computer from yesterday so when Paul came in he was angry and frustrated.

Paul: You again. I thought you had left this seat.

Julian: Yes I did.

Paul: Then what are you doing here?

Julian: Oh! Sorry. That was yesterday which is very different from today.

Paul: Well I don’t care so go away.

Julian: And if I refuse?

Paul: You ………………………………………..

Teacher: Ok students since we are more than the available computers, we are going to have to pair up.

Julian: (Looking at Paul) don’t even think about it.

Paul: Well I already have and I am remaining here.

Julian: Then l will leave.

Paul: Took you long enough.

Julian moved around the whole computer lab and found that every computer had been taken up so he had no choice but to go back to the only available computer with Paul. None of them liked the idea but since it was for the sake of their education they endured.

During the lesson, the two kept on fighting on who should type, who should write and this got them in trouble as the lesson ended since none of them understood a thing the whole time. Of course they got even more annoyed with each other as they both blamed each other for not letting the other pay attention.

Paul was friends with Alvin and Alex both of whom were also in the Arts program. He told them about this boy who was giving him stress.

Paul: Damn this guy is so annoying. He boldly refused me to even touch themouse of the computer. “The mouse”

Alvin: Eeiii Come on. Only that and you are complaining .Man up and chase him away.

Alex: I agree with Alvin. You are acting like a second grade student. Bro man up.

Paul: You guys think that it is that simple. Today was our second encounter and l had managed to get him away but since the teacher said that we had to share the computers, he had to come back.

Alvin: If that’s the case then you can just ask to switch places with any other person.

Alex: Actually that’s a great idea. Paul all you have to do is just find a person willing to switch places with you.

Paul: I will try it. Hmmm I hope it works.

Paul was a boarding student while Julian was a day schooling student. Julian had also made friends with fellow day schooling students that is Kareen and Kenneth who were also in the science program so he told them the same story.

Julian: How can one person ruin your entire day?

Kareen: What happened?

Julian: There is this dude in my ICT class who doesn’t want me to use the computer. We argued the whole lesson and l ended up not even understanding the simplest things.

Kenneth: So why were the two of you arguing?

Julian: You see, the computers were not enough so we had to share and unfortunately for me, I had to share it with him and since we started off on the wrong foot yesterday, the end result from today was terrible.

Kareen: Then why don’t you just switch computers with someone else?

Julian: Hmmm Kareen you are actually right. That’s the first thing am doing in the next computer lesson.

The best thing about time is that it waits for no man. So obviously the time for the next computer lesson had come. This is where fate plays mind games with these two. In the process of avoiding contact with each other……………..

Paul: hey guys. Who would like to switch computer partners with me?

Jovia: Hmmmmm that is going to be hard coz most people are now close to their partners so they might not want to change all of a sudden.

Fred: Hey I have seen a free computer. I think it’s the sixth from the right on the third row.

Paul: Really……thanks

Paul took off to go to the so called free computer.

Meanwhile;

Julian: You guys I would like to switch computer partners, anyone interested?

Doreen: Haaa I bet.

Julian: why?

Doreen: Coz I am sure that everyone is now used to their partners and they won’t want to change.

Joan: Come on don’t be so pessimistic. I have seen a free computer. I think it’s the sixth from the left on the third row.

Julian: Are you serious! Wow thanks.

They were both excited, with smiles as wide as the ocean and hopes as high as the sky. All these disappeared after realizing that they, the very same people were at the very same computer. It was free because none of them had showed up to use it. They looked at each other like dogs who are about to fight for a bone. With complete anger and disgust, they had nothing to do but deal with what fate had put before them.

That lesson was considered dead as many more that followed because they still kept fighting for the controls and on who should be doing what.

A few lessons later;

Teacher: Students I have an announcement. Tomorrow we are having a practical test so I hope you guys have picked something from the past few lessons we have had. I need to test you on what we have covered so far.

This news got Julian and Paul tensed. They were worried and wondering how they were going to pass this surprise test that they very well knew were bound to fail since they had not been paying attention.

Paul: Oh! Great look what you have done.

Julian: Me!!! Oh come on you have yourself to blame not me.

Paul: If only you had left me to enjoy the computer.

Julian: No. If only you had left me on the computer.

Paul: What the hell! Who do you think you are?

Julian: Damn you have some nerve.

Paul: If I fail this test I going to…….

Julian: What!!!! You are going to what??????

Paul: l…l…

Julian :( while mimicking Paul) l..l…l..Enough with your cold threats. Let me make myself perfectly clear here. I don’t know who you are and am not interested in finding out but if l fail this test, you are going to find out who l think l am and trust me, you don’t.

Julian walked away. Never in his wildest dreams had Paul ever been threatened like today.

When the two chatted with their friends after narrating how fate was ganging up on them, they still got the same advice.

Paul: And that’s it. If I don’t pass am done for.

Alvin: Why are you tensed it’s just a damn test?

Paul: To you that’s what it is. To me it means so much more than that.

Alex: If you want to pass so badly why not ask the teacher for assistance in his free time?

Paul: Right. I think that’s a good idea.

Back to Julian;

Julian: And now if I fail the stupid test, am going to kill him.

Kenneth: Woooooo……. Come on its just one test.

Kareen: Kenneth this is ICT. You never know that one test contributes something.

Kenneth: I know that. Am doing the same subject remember. Anyway if it’s so important then why don’t you ask your teacher for help?

Julian: Brilliant. I wonder why l didn’t think of that.

The next day, both Paul and Julian wanted to request assistance from their teacher although Paul got there first.

Paul: Good morning sir.

Teacher: Good morning. How can l help you?

Paul: Sir am sorry to say this but I haven’t been paying attention in your classes and now l know for sure that l am going to fail the test.

Teacher: Is that my problem?

Paul: No sir but l am hoping you could help show me some of the basics that you taught.

Teacher: I would but I can’t teach just one person. So all you have to do is find a friend so I can help two people at once. And by the way why didn’t you ask your partner for help?

The thought of Julian gave Paul chills

Paul: Well sir my partner and l actually didn’t understand anything so we are kind of in the same boat.

Teacher: Ok then that works in your favor. Just go find your partner and come together so that l can help you both.

Paul: But………..

Teacher: Don’t waste time hurry up and go.

Paul felt like he had been given a heavy burden to lift all by himself. This got him regretting having asked for the teacher’s help but on the other hand what lie was he going to tell Julian to get him to come here and learn with him.

As he was exiting the computer lab, he bumped into Julian.

Julian: Jesus Christ on a wooden bicycle.

Paul: Not you again.

Julian: No I won’t let you ruin my day. So please step aside.

Paul: What do you want from the computer lab?

Julian: Well you have got some guts don’t you? What I want is none of your business.

Paul: Oh really. Well I think we are both here for the same thing but I guess I want to see your face after you have come from in there so….(while standing aside from the entrance)… After you..... (Pointing through the door)

Julian angrily walked passed him and entered the lab.

Julian: Good morning sir.

Teacher: Good morning.

Julian: Sir I really need your help. I haven’t been paying attention in your previous lessons and I fear I might fail your test if l don’t understand what you taught.

Teacher: Well actually there is another student who came here saying the same thing. Anyway have you tried asking your partner for help?

Julian: Unfortunately my partner is the very reason why l was not paying attention.

Teacher: Ok I told the previous student that l can’t teach him alone and that I need him to come with his partner so that l teach both of them but now that you are here, I think teaching four people will be better. So just go get your partner and come here.

The last seven words from the teacher’s mouth almost made Julian faint. The thought of studying with the very person that made him lose his concentration in the first place gave him an upset stomach.

Paul had patiently waited for Julian knowing that he had to ask him to go with him for the lesson. Julian came out furious and frustrated and the look on his face was amusement to Paul. He walked straight to him and Paul was just smiling.

Paul: So why are you standing in front of me? (With a very big smile)

Julian: You know why and yet you still want me to tell you.

Paul: Of course. If you are in need of my help please ask nicely and l will see what I can do.

Julian: (Now even angrier) what!!!! You are making a joke out of this aren’t you?

Paul: Yes I am. You are mean and arrogant. I am just returning the favor.

Julian: Oh! Ok I see what’s going on here.

Paul: Took you long enough.

Julian: Are you coming with me or not?

Paul: Beg me.

Julian: NEVER

Paul: Then suit yourself.

Julian: You know what, screw you. I really wanted to pass this damn test but if you are going to make it hard for me then I might as well just give up coz I am no longer that desperate to pass a mere test. (While walking away)

Paul: Wait…….

Julian: (With a mild smile stops walking and turns back angrily) what??????

Paul: I will do it ok. I don’t like you but I still want good grades.

Julian: Praise the Lord, for the spirit of arrogance has left your body.

Paul: Don’t make me change my mind.

Julian: Hmmmmm………. I dare you.

Paul: Just shut up and let’s go.

They entered the computer lab and the teachers was very surprised because of the site of them, and after realizing that they were partners, he laughed his guts out. He gave them the lesson as expected but he intentionally gave them assignments to work on together. Their fighting was amusement for him. Surprisingly he wondered if they even knew each other’s name.

Teacher: Hey you. Call your friend here.

Paul: sir l am sorry but l don’t know his name.

Teacher: (busting into laughter) You have been working with the same person for some time now and you don’t even know his name.

Paul: I wasn’t interested in knowing his name.

Teacher: Hey student.

Julian: Yes Sir.

Teacher: What is your name?

Julian: Am Julian.

Teacher: And you?

Paul: Paul

Teacher: Good now that you know each other, Can you please shake hands.

Both: HELL NO

Teacher: Well I was just making fun of you.

Julian: Thank you for the lesson sir but I will be on my way now.

Paul: Me as well.

Teacher: Before you go. I just want you to know that the test will be done in teams, which means you two will be doing it as a team.

Both: WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!
