CHAPTER ONE :The Mafia’s Maid

Rain poured heavily across the streets of Guadalajara, turning the glowing nightlife into blurred streaks of gold and red. Cars rushed through flooded roads while distant thunder rolled across the sky.

Inside a tiny apartment above an old laundromat, twenty-one-year-old Elena Ramirez stared silently at the eviction notice in her hands.

Three months overdue.

Final warning.

Her chest tightened.

Across the room, her mother slept weakly beneath a thin blanket, coughing softly every few minutes. Medicine bottles crowded the small bedside table.

Elena looked away before the guilt could swallow her whole.

She was trying.

God knew she was trying.

Morning cleaning jobs. Night shifts at a diner. Online classes whenever exhaustion allowed it. But no matter how hard she worked, life always seemed one step ahead of her.

A knock sounded at the door.

Elena quickly folded the notice before opening it.

“Tessa?”

Her best friend stepped inside, soaked from the rain.

“You look awful,” Tessa said.

“Nice to see you too.”

Tessa gave a small smile before noticing the paper in Elena’s hand.

Her expression changed immediately.

“He’s serious this time?”

Elena nodded once.

“In three days, we’re out.”

Silence settled between them.

Then Tessa slowly reached into her bag.

“I found something.”

Elena leaned against the door tiredly. “If it’s another waitressing job, I already applied.”

“It’s not.”

Tessa placed her phone on the table.

A photograph filled the screen.

A massive black mansion overlooking the hills outside the city. Tall gates. Armed security. Expensive cars lined perfectly outside.

Beautiful.

Cold.

Dangerous.

Elena frowned. “Who lives there?”

Tessa hesitated.

“That matters?”

“Yes.”

Another pause.

Then—

“Dante Moretti.”

The air shifted instantly.

Elena stared at her.

Even in a city full of rumors, everyone knew that name.

Dante Moretti.

A man connected to money, violence, power, and fear. Some called him a businessman. Others called him something far worse.

People disappeared around men like him.

“Elena,” Tessa said carefully, “he’s looking for a live-in maid.”

Elena almost laughed.

“You’re joking.”

“I’m serious.”

“No.”

“The pay is huge.”

“I said no.”

Tessa stepped closer.

“You need this job.”

Elena’s jaw tightened. “And if he’s exactly the kind of man people say he is?”

“Then keep your head down, clean the house, take the money, and leave.”

Simple.

Too simple.

Nothing about powerful men was ever simple.

Elena crossed her arms tightly.

“I don’t belong anywhere near people like that.”

But her eyes drifted back toward her mother sleeping weakly on the bed.

Hospital bills.

Rent.

Food.

Time was running out.

Tessa lowered her voice.

“One month there could change everything for you.”

Elena hated that she was listening.

Hated that desperation was slowly winning.

Outside, thunder shook the windows.

Finally, she whispered the question she never wanted to ask.

“How much does he pay?”

The moment Tessa answered, Elena’s heart nearly stopped.

It was more money than she had ever seen in her life.

Enough to save them.

Enough to destroy her too.

And deep down…

She already knew she was going to say yes.
