Chapter 1 - THE STORM

The rain didn’t fall.

It attacked.

Cold drops slammed against the ground, against the empty valley, against the small figure sitting alone in the middle of it.

Thunder cracked across the sky.

For a moment, the world turned white—

Then dark again.

The girl didn’t move.

Her small hands were wrapped tightly around her knees, her body trembling—not just from the cold, but from something deeper.

Something quieter.

“…Mom…”

Her voice was barely audible under the storm.

“…Dad…”

Nothing answered.

Only the wind, screaming through the valley like it was swallowing her words before they could exist.

Her lips quivered.

She pressed her face harder into her arms.

“They said I was a curse…”

The words came out broken.

Like she didn’t fully understand them—but felt them anyway.

Time passed.

Or maybe it didn’t.

In a place like this, it was impossible to tell.

The world felt paused.

Abandoned.

Until—

Footsteps.

Slow.

Measured.

Unhurried.

The girl stiffened.

At first, she thought it was her imagination.

But then—

Another step.

Closer.

Not running.

Not rushing.

Walking.

Like the storm didn’t matter.

Her head lifted slowly.

Through the rain—

a figure appeared.

Tall.

Still.

Unmoved by the chaos around him.

The lightning flashed again.

For a split second, his face became visible.

Sharp eyes.

Cold—but not cruel.

Just… distant.

The girl didn’t speak.

She just stared.

The man stopped in front of her.

Looking down.

Not with pity.

Not with warmth.

Just… observing.

“Why are you here alone?” he asked.

His voice was calm.

Too calm for a night like this.

The girl swallowed.

Her throat hurt.

“…My parents…” she tried to speak, but her voice cracked.

She forced it out anyway.

“…They left me.”

Silence.

The rain kept falling.

Harder.

The man didn’t react immediately.

He just watched her.

Like he was trying to decide something.

“…They said I was a curse,” she whispered.

This time, her tears mixed with the rain.

Impossible to separate.

A long pause followed.

The kind that felt like everything was being weighed.

Measured.

Judged.

“What is your name?” he asked.

She hesitated.

Like even that answer mattered.

“…Nova,” she said quietly.

Another rumble of thunder.

“…I’m five.”

The man’s gaze didn’t change.

But something in the air did.

Subtle.

Almost unnoticeable.

“Kenshin,” he said.

No explanation.

Just a name.

Nova didn’t understand why he told her.

But it felt important.

For a moment, neither of them moved.

Then—

Kenshin reached up.

Removed his coat.

And placed it over her shoulders.

Warmth.

Sudden.

Unfamiliar.

Nova froze.

Her fingers clutched the fabric instinctively.

Like if she let go, everything would disappear again.

Kenshin turned.

Not asking.

Not waiting.

“Come with me.”

Two simple words.

No comfort.

No promise.

But something about them—

felt more real than anything else she had heard that night.

Nova looked behind her.

The empty valley.

The place where she was left.

Then forward.

At the man walking away.

She hesitated.

Just for a second.

Then stood up.

Her legs weak.

Her body shaking.

But she followed.

Step by step.

Into the storm.

Into the unknown.

And that night—

without understanding it—

Nova left behind the girl who was abandoned…

…and stepped into the life that would one day turn her into something far more dangerous.

CHAPTER 1 — THE NAKAMURA FAMILY (EXPANDED)

The gates opened slowly.

Metal groaned under its own weight as they parted, revealing a path that stretched far beyond what Nova expected.

She stood there, small and silent, Kenshin’s coat still wrapped around her shoulders.

The rain had stopped.

But the cold hadn’t.

“…Where are we?” she asked softly.

Kenshin didn’t look back.

“You’ll see.”

That was all.

Nova tightened her grip on the coat and followed.

The path was long.

Too long.

Lined with tall trees that blocked most of the sky, turning everything dim even though it wasn’t night anymore.

Every step echoed in her ears.

Her small shoes crunching lightly against the gravel.

Kenshin’s footsteps ahead—steady, controlled.

Never slowing.

Never turning.

Nova kept her distance.

Not because she wanted to.

But because something about him made her unsure how close she was allowed to be.

Then—

the mansion appeared.

Massive.

Silent.

Standing like it had been there longer than anything else in the world.

Nova stopped walking.

Her breath caught slightly.

“…It’s so big,” she whispered.

Kenshin finally paused.

He didn’t react to her words.

Just walked forward again.

The doors opened before he even touched them.

Inside—

everything changed.

Warmth.

Silence.

And something else.

Something Nova didn’t have a name for yet.

The air felt… heavy.

Not in a bad way.

Just different.

Like the walls themselves were watching.

Footsteps approached.

Soft.

Graceful.

A woman appeared.

Long silver hair.

Calm eyes.

She moved without sound, stopping in front of Nova before gently lowering herself to her level.

“My name is Kagura,” she said, her voice soft—but not weak.

Nova blinked.

“…Nova,” she replied quietly.

Kagura studied her for a moment.

Not judging.

Not questioning.

Just understanding more than she was saying.

“You must be cold,” she said.

Nova didn’t answer.

But her trembling gave her away.

Kagura smiled faintly.

“…You’re safe here.”

Safe.

The word felt unfamiliar.

Nova didn’t know if she believed it yet.

Then—

she noticed them.

Two figures standing at a distance.

Watching.

One leaned slightly against the wall.

Relaxed.

But his eyes were sharp.

Unpredictable.

The other stood straight.

Still.

Silent.

His gaze didn’t move.

Didn’t blink.

It felt like being analyzed.

Nova instinctively stepped closer to Kagura.

“…Who are they?” she whispered.

Kagura glanced back.

“…Your new family.”

The words were simple.

But they didn’t feel simple.

The relaxed one stepped forward first.

A small smirk on his lips.

“Well, this is new,” he said casually. “Didn’t expect a kid.”

His tone wasn’t rude.

But it wasn’t welcoming either.

Nova frowned slightly.

“…I’m not a kid.”

That made him pause.

Then laugh softly.

“Interesting.”

Kagura gave him a look.

“Kaelion.”

He raised his hands slightly in mock surrender.

“Relax. I’m just talking.”

The other one didn’t move.

Didn’t speak.

He just watched Nova.

Carefully.

Like he was trying to figure out something no one else could see.

Nova noticed.

And didn’t like it.

“…Why is he staring?” she muttered.

Kagura’s voice remained calm.

“That’s Evan.”

Evan didn’t react to hearing his name.

But after a moment—

he finally spoke.

“She doesn’t belong here.”

Silence fell instantly.

Nova froze.

Kagura’s expression didn’t change.

But something in the room did.

Kenshin stepped forward slightly.

“That’s not your decision,” he said.

Evan’s gaze shifted to him.

Then back to Nova.

“…We don’t take in strangers.”

Nova clenched her hands slightly.

She didn’t understand everything.

But she understood enough.

She wasn’t wanted.

Not by him.

Kaelion exhaled, rubbing the back of his neck.

“Man, you’re always like this,” he muttered.

Then his eyes flicked back to Nova.

“…But he’s not completely wrong.”

Nova’s chest tightened.

Kagura stood up slowly.

Her presence alone quieted the room.

“She’s not a stranger anymore,” she said.

No argument.

No raised voice.

Just certainty.

A long pause followed.

Then—

Evan looked away.

That was it.

But somehow, it felt like a decision had been made.

Not acceptance.

Not yet.

But something close.

Kagura turned back to Nova.

“…Come,” she said gently. “Let’s get you cleaned up.”

Nova hesitated.

Her eyes flicked between them.

Kenshin.

Evan.

Kaelion.

This place.

This life she didn’t understand.

Then slowly—

she nodded.

As she walked away with Kagura—

Kaelion spoke again, quieter this time.

“…You really think she’ll fit in?”

Kenshin didn’t hesitate.

“She will.”

Evan remained silent.

But his gaze followed Nova until she disappeared down the hall.

Something about her—

didn’t sit right.

Or maybe—

it was exactly why she was here.

Later that night—

Nova stood alone in a large room.

Clean.

Warm.

Too quiet.

She sat on the edge of the bed, gripping the blanket tightly.

“…Safe,” she whispered.

The word still didn’t feel real.

Not yet.

But for the first time—

she wasn’t in the rain.

And that was enough.

For now.
