Chapter One; Pilot

Two voices in the kitchen spoke loudly. “Well, you could’ve taken my name!” A male voice said. “I didn’t want to; I wanted to keep my name.” The female voice said, “And even if I take your last name now, the children’s surnames are mine, what? Should we change theirs too!” She added. “God, you are ridiculous” The male voice replied. A boy appeared in the doorway. His black fluffy hair covered his eyes a bit, due for a haircut? No, he wanted to keep it how it was, he’s said in the past. Brown eyes hid under his hair. Freckles on his cheeks, the boy was maybe 14? He wore a jumper with a pair of jeans. “Mum?” The boy said, his voice was low, quiet. “Ash, and Rei want you to read them a story” His eyes looked at the two standing, his mum who had brown eyes just like his, her blonde yet dyed dark brown hair was tucked behind her ear, she wore a white suit-like shirt with trousers, and his dad, who had taken a seat, clearly irritated, they all had the same eye color, his dad had short black hair, no freckles, the boy had got his freckles from his mum. His dad wore jeans with a teal-colored shirt. The woman looked at the boy, “Will? Baby, do me a favor and go to y’all’s room, okay? Mummy’ll go read to y’all in a moment. Okay?” She said in a sweet high tone with a smile on her face. Will nodded. When the boy left the woman turned back to the man, “Malcolm, this conversation is done, whether you like it or not, I’m going to read to our kids, since I know you sure as hell won’t.” She said, the comment made the man bite the inside of his cheek, “Grace.” Malcolm said, when she had already left. His fist slammed on the table. Back in the room when William entered the doorway, he saw his little brother Asher who was 8, he looked identical to their mum, his little sister Rei who was only 4 looked exactly like their dad except she had freckles covering her cute chubby cheeks, her grin was everyone’s definition of an angel’s smile, she was so sweet everyone had thought. Their baby sister Leslie rested in Asher’s arms. Their parents were busy a lot so William had taught Asher how to hold their sister since Will himself and their parents couldn’t possibly hold her 24/7, Will had told Asher to only let him put Leslie in the crib to avoid her from being dropped. Rei and Asher smiled big when they saw Will return to their room, considering they were all so young they had shared a room, when Asher turns 10, their parent’s plan was to move him into Will’s room, they would do so his year when Asher turns 9 but they already knew they’d be too busy and Asher won’t be an issue until he is at least 10 so that would be that. Their mum Grace went into the room after William just a moment later, a sweet smile covered her face, “Alright, my darlings, have y’all chosen a book to be read to y’all?” She asked, “Yeah! Read the car book!” Asher said, “Alright” Their mum said, “Go ahead and settle down you” she said to the littles. Will had picked Leslie up from Asher’s arms and set her in her cradle. Asher was tucked in first, then Rei. Will started looking on the table for Leslie’s dummy. When everyone settled down, Grace had started reading the children the story. After the book was finished Will had got up first and Grace followed him into the hallway. Grace was just about to go to her room when Will said, “Mum? A moment, please?” She turned around and walked back to him, “Yes?” She replied. “This morning when the postman came to deliver the mail, he said I should give a paper to you, I put it on the countertop. “Oh? Alright, thank you for letting me know, go ahead and head to bed” she said. Will nodded, “Alright, love you mum.” He said, she kissed his forehead. “I love you too” Will went to his room after. Grace walked over to the kitchen; she picked up the mail when she saw a letter after opening them all. The letter told her Malcolm’s prescription was no longer able to be picked up; there was a shortage. That night they fought about that exact letter, clearly Malcolm was upset. He had a sickness; only his medication could give him more time.
