Prologue - The Last Dig
The wind moved across the desert like it was trying to erase everything in its path. Sand shifted over broken stone, hiding what once might have been a road, a city, or something older than both.
Far below the surface, inside a narrow excavation tunnel, two figures worked under the glow of dim lantern light.
John brushed dust from an ancient stone wall, his hands steady despite the heat and exhaustion. Beside him, Samantha carefully traced symbols carved deep into the rock.
Neither of them spoke for a moment.
The silence was not peaceful. It was heavy.
John finally exhaled. “Tell me you’re seeing what I’m seeing.”
Samantha didn’t look away from the symbols. “I am. And I wish I wasn’t.”
The carvings were not normal writing. They didn’t belong to any known civilization. The shapes twisted in unnatural patterns, as if the language itself had been forced into existence.
At the center of the wall was a circular marking — almost like a seal — surrounded by warnings.
Samantha stepped back slightly. “This isn’t just a tomb.”
John nodded slowly. “No… it’s a lock.”
A distant rumble echoed through the tunnel. Dust fell from the ceiling in thin streams.
Samantha finally turned to him. “John… something is already down here with us.”
Before he could respond, the lantern light flickered violently.
For a split second, the tunnel darkened completely.
Then—
A whisper filled the space. Not spoken by either of them.
Something else.
John reached for his equipment bag, pulling out a worn journal. “We leave. Now.”
Samantha grabbed his arm. “We can’t. We’re too close.”
Another tremor shook the ground, stronger this time. A crack formed in the ancient wall, and cold air rushed through it — air that did not belong underground.
From the darkness beyond the crack, something moved.
Not fully seen. Not fully real.
John pulled Samantha back. “Whatever that is, it wasn’t meant to be found.”
Samantha stared at the wall one last time, her eyes scanning the symbols as if trying to memorize them in seconds.
Then she whispered, almost to herself:
“If this seal breaks… it won’t stay buried.”
The tunnel began to collapse.
John grabbed her hand, and they ran.
Behind them, the wall shattered.
And something on the other side finally noticed the surface world.
