Chapter 1 — The Bride of Shadows

The bells of the Dragon Empire tolled for dawn, and the firebirds wept crimson light across the palace roofs. Princess Kaelara stood before the mirror, her reflection drowning in layers of gold silk. Jewels gleamed in her hair, chained between two curved horns that glimmered faintly the way dragonbone did before it burned.

Tomorrow she would be bound to the Vampire Prince.

Tomorrow the peace of two nations would be bought with her blood.

Her hand trembled as she adjusted the veil. Behind her, servants whispered blessings that sounded more like farewells. The air smelled of incense and iron.

Kaelara had always known her life was not her own. Daughters of the Dragon Emperor were not born to love—they were born to be offered.

Yet she still dreamed. Of skies she could fly without chains, of winds that didn't howl in her father's name. Her heart, half-dragon and half-human, burned for freedom.

A knock came at the door. It opened without waiting for her answer.

Only one man in the empire ignored royal courtesy.

Prince Lucien.

Dark hair fell like shadows across pale cheeks. His lips curved the way blades did—beautiful, deadly. His eyes gleamed crimson, but his smile was practiced warmth.

"Princess," he murmured. "Do you not tire of staring at yourself? The mirror might crack from envy."

Kaelara turned, hiding her fear behind humor. "A dragon's pride is the only veil I wear willingly, my lord."

Lucien's strides were noiseless. He reached her, touched her chin as though she were a fragile piece of art. His fingers left cold trails on her skin.

"Tomorrow," he whispered, "you'll belong to me. Fire and night will share a throne."

"Peace ends when blood is spilled, my prince," Kaelara replied quietly. "Don't mistake obedience for purity."

He smiled then, slow and cruel. "You'll learn gentleness. I'll make sure of it."

When he left, her breath broke free in ragged pieces. The doors sealed the silence like a coffin lid.

Kaelara faced her mirror again—and saw herself dying in it.

The memory returned: the silver chains, the kiss that drained her breath, the laughter of her half sister Seraphine in the dark.

Her reflection mouthed words she hadn't spoken since her last breath.

Not again.

That night she dreamt of fire and stars. Her body was ash, her soul falling and rising all at once. A voice wove through the flames.

Do you wish to do this again, flame-born?

"If I could, I would burn them all," she whispered into nothing.

The voice sighed like thunder.

Then burn wisely.

Kaelara awoke to sunlight and perfume. Her maid entered softly, bowing. "Good dawn, Princess. The wedding gifts from the vampire court have arrived."

The same words. The same day. Even the same crimson bloom in the vase.

Cold realization rippled through her.

"No," she murmured. "No, no—this can't be—"

But when she pricked her finger on a golden pin, the blood was real. The pain was real.

She had come back. One day before her death.

And this time, she would not die for peace.
