Fin di seicle fantasy
"This is a gorgeous, historically-informed tale of fantasy, using the backdrop of fin-di-seicle London to spice up the traditional tale of dragons. The author is able to conjure up not only the sounds of late 19th century England but the style as well, evoking something of the syntax and cadence of H.G. Wells and Oscar Wilde. The narration carries the reader effortlessly through the story, which has almost no slack at all. Beautiful turns of phrase and poetic details abound, and it's a joy simply to read the sentences, much less the story itself. Very well done. Only very occasionally did I feel the author became too self-conscious about the style, and threw in forced anachronisms as signposts for the story. One that jumps out at me was "be-whiskered," which seemed unnecessary in its context and again, too obvious in trying to date the story. But this aside, it's a strongly written and imagined tale of a world that never was, but could have easily existed in the twilight of Victoria's London."
