Summary

Kavya Lakshmi is a south Indian 8th grader who has never been taught what love feels like — in her house it was never spoken about, sometimes it felt like a crime. Around strangers she is quiet and unreadable, but around her bestie Avni she is a complete riot. On a Monday that is already going badly, she notices Advait Kumar — a boy with a history. What follows is not a love story, or at least Kavya refuses to call it one. It is everything that happens before you know what to call it — the restlessness, the confusion, the feelings that showed up without instructions. She doesn't come out transformed. Just a little more herself than she was before.

Prologue

This is the story of Kavya Lakshmi.

Not a love story. She would like to make that very clear upfront. She doesn't even know if she believes in love — not because she's negative, but because nobody ever really explained it to her. In her house, love was not a conversation. It existed somewhere between the things that were understood and the things that were simply never spoken about. On the worst days it felt like something close to a crime.

So when something started stirring — some interest that kept showing up uninvited — Kavya did what any reasonable person would do.

She ignored it.

a story not about falling in love.

It is a story about everything that happens before you even know that's what it is.

The part nobody talks about — where you don't have a name for what you're feeling so you just carry it around like something heavy in your school bag that you keep forgetting to take out. That restlessness.

This is that journey. Unplanned, unexplained, and frankly nobody's business. But it happened. And Kavya — confused, stubborn, completely unprepared — walked through it anyway. Came out the other side a little different. Not transformed. Just more herself than she was before.
