May – Love Began Where Pain Ended

8 May

I still remember that morning so clearly.

I had the day off, but inside I felt exhausted. I needed the sea — not for fun, but for peace. So I called the owner of the Blue Lagoon boat trips, who is also my friend, and asked if he could send the bus to pick me up from the hotel and take me on a boat trip.

The bus arrived early, and I sat in their office with the owner, waiting for the boat to start boarding. Nothing felt special yet. I didn’t expect anything. I was still broken from my past relationship, quietly trying to hold myself together.

At 10:15, I stepped onto the boat.

And there he was.

He said, “hello.”

I answered softly, “hii,” without even looking into his eyes. I couldn’t. I wasn’t ready to let anyone see how fragile I still was.

I went straight to the nose of the boat and sat alone. When the boat started moving at 10:30, the wind touched my face, the smell of the sea filled my lungs, and for the first time in a long while, I felt a small sense of relief.

When we arrived at the Blue Lagoon, the staff began preparing everything for the guests to swim. That’s when I noticed him standing near the slide.

His curly hair.

His beautiful smile.

Something about him kept pulling my attention.

I was on the phone, arguing with my relatives about some tickets, when suddenly I heard his voice.

“Do you want to try the slide?”

I was scared. I had never gone on a slide before. So I told him, “Soon… give me some time and I will come.” I explained that I was still on the phone. He didn’t rush me or get annoyed. He just smiled gently, like he understood.

I changed into my swimsuit, trying to gather courage. I climbed up to the slide, but fear stopped me.

He noticed immediately.

“Do you want me to come with you?” he asked softly.

I hesitated, then said, “No… I will go from the back side of the boat to check the temperature of the water first. If I jump and the water is cold, my heart will stop. I promise I will come.”

He smiled and said,

“Okay. You promised. I’m waiting.”

The water was freezing, so I stayed in it for five to ten minutes, letting my body get used to the cold. When I finally went back inside the boat, he was still there — waiting for me, exactly as he said.

He pointed at the slide with a playful look.

I smiled and said, “I know. I promised, and I always keep my promise.”

He helped me climb the slide. His hand was calm and steady. Then I jumped.

He leaned over from above and asked,

“Are you okay?”

“Yes,” I laughed. “I’m perfect.”

And he laughed with me.

Just like that — in the middle of the sea, between strangers, sunlight, and salt water — something gentle and unexpected connected us.

Two broken hearts, meeting on an ordinary day in May.

A beginning neither of us planned… but one that felt real.

That was how it started.
