Chapter 1
Snow fell softly over Blood Ridge territory, turning the massive pack grounds silver beneath the full moon.
Music echoed from the ceremonial hall.
Laughter.
Glasses clinking.
Warm firelight spilling through towering windows.
Tonight was supposed to be the happiest night of Lily Vale’s life.
Her fingers trembled as she smoothed down the soft white fabric hugging her body. The dress wasn’t extravagant compared to what the higher-ranking wolves wore, but she had spent three months secretly sewing tiny silver beads into the sleeves herself.
Because tonight mattered.
Tonight, Axel would finally choose her.
Her wolf stirred anxiously beneath her skin.
Mate.
The word fluttered through her chest with nervous hope.
Lily stared at her reflection one last time inside the small washroom near the back of the ceremonial hall. Loose waves of pale blonde hair framed her face, and her blue eyes glowed softly under the moonlight streaming through the high windows.
Pretty enough.
Hopefully.
She pressed a hand over the frantic beating of her heart.
“You’re shaking,” a voice teased softly behind her.
Lily turned to find Mara standing in the doorway holding two glasses of champagne.
Mara had been her closest friend since childhood. Dark-haired, sharp-tongued, and brutally honest.
Tonight, though, even she looked emotional.
“You think tonight’s finally the night?” Mara asked gently.
Lily bit her lip, unable to stop the smile threatening to appear.
“I think so.”
Mara handed her a glass.
“He’s been acting possessive all week.”
Heat climbed into Lily’s cheeks immediately.
Axel had.
Little touches.
Lingering looks.
Standing too close.
Growling at another male during training yesterday.
Her wolf had nearly purred itself to sleep afterward.
Mara leaned against the doorway, watching her carefully.
“You love him that much?”
Lily laughed nervously.
“That obvious?”
“Lily,” Mara said softly. “You’ve loved that man since you were sixteen.”
That was true.
Everyone knew it.
Axel Blackthorne was impossible not to notice.
Future alpha of Blood Ridge.
Massive.
Powerful.
Beautiful in a dangerous way.
Women stared when he walked into rooms.
Men moved aside instinctively.
And somehow… somehow… he had always looked back at Lily.
At first she thought she imagined it.
Then came the late-night conversations after patrols.
His hand brushing hers.
The heated stares.
The tension.
The feeling deep inside her wolf every time he got close.
Mate.
The bond had never fully snapped into place, but wolves often said it happened strongest during claiming ceremonies under the full moon.
And tonight was the Winter Ascension Ceremony.
The night many future alphas publicly announced chosen mates.
Lily had spent weeks convincing herself not to hope too much.
But hope still lived inside her anyway.
Dangerous thing.
Mara smiled softly.
“Well,” she said, straightening Lily’s dress straps. “When he officially claims you tonight, try not to cry in front of the whole pack.”
Lily laughed quietly.
“No promises.”
The music outside swelled louder.
People cheering.
The ceremony was beginning.
Her stomach flipped violently.
Mara squeezed her hand once.
“Go get your alpha.”
—
The ceremonial hall glowed gold beneath enormous chandeliers crafted from antlers and crystal.
Hundreds of wolves filled the room.
Warriors.
Elders.
Families.
Pack members dressed in black, silver, and crimson.
The air smelled like pine smoke, expensive liquor, and wolf.
Lily stepped inside slowly.
And immediately found him.
Axel stood near the center platform reserved for the alpha bloodline.
Tall.
Broad-shouldered.
Dark hair perfectly styled back from his forehead.
Black suit fitted against a body built for violence.
He looked devastating.
Her breath caught painfully.
As if sensing her stare, Axel turned.
Their eyes met across the crowded hall.
Heat flooded through her instantly.
His gaze dragged slowly over her body.
Lingering.
Heavy.
Possessive.
Lily’s pulse stumbled.
Mate.
Her wolf pressed forward eagerly.
Axel’s jaw tightened almost imperceptibly.
Then he lifted his glass slightly toward her.
A private acknowledgment.
Intimate.
Lily’s heart nearly burst.
Mara appeared beside her again, grinning.
“Oh, he’s absolutely claiming you tonight.”
Lily tried to hide her smile.
Failed completely.
Across the room, Axel continued watching her.
Not speaking to anyone else.
Not looking anywhere else.
Just her.
The bond between them felt electric tonight.
Alive.
Like something waiting beneath the surface.
A server passed by carrying champagne and Lily barely noticed.
Her entire world had narrowed to the future alpha staring at her like she already belonged to him.
God.
She loved him.
So much it physically hurt sometimes.
The ceremony officially began moments later.
Alpha Victor Blackthorne—Axel’s father—stood atop the raised platform at the front of the hall.
Conversations quieted instantly.
Power rolled through the room naturally.
“Tonight,” Victor announced, “we celebrate strength, unity, and the future of Blood Ridge.”
Applause echoed.
Lily barely heard it.
Axel still hadn’t looked away from her.
Her wolf paced excitedly.
Choose us.
Please.
Victor continued speaking about alliances, territory growth, and the coming winter, but Lily’s chest grew tighter with every passing second.
Then finally—
“The future alpha has an announcement.”
The room erupted immediately.
Whispers.
Excitement.
Anticipation.
Lily’s breath stopped.
This was it.
Axel stepped forward slowly.
Every eye followed him.
Power radiated from him effortlessly.
Confident.
Dominant.
Untouchable.
And then—
His eyes found Lily again.
A small smile touched his mouth.
Her stomach flipped so hard she nearly lost balance.
Mate.
Mate.
Mate.
She could feel her wolf trembling now.
Axel lifted a hand slightly.
Crooking two fingers toward himself.
Come here.
The gesture was subtle.
Private.
Intimate.
But Lily obeyed instantly.
Her heartbeat thundered as she crossed the crowded hall toward him.
People began smiling knowingly around them.
Some already looked impressed.
Others jealous.
Lily barely noticed any of it.
Because Axel was watching her approach with burning intensity.
When she finally stopped in front of the platform, close enough to touch him, he looked down at her for several long seconds.
Her breathing became uneven.
He smelled incredible.
Pine.
Smoke.
Male wolf.
Home.
The room had gone almost silent now.
Waiting.
Lily looked up at him with nervous, aching hope.
Axel’s expression remained unreadable.
Then slowly—
He smiled.
Relief nearly made her knees buckle.
“Oh goddess,” someone whispered nearby.
“He’s finally doing it.”
Warmth exploded through Lily’s chest.
Axel leaned down slightly toward her.
Close enough for only her to hear.
“You look beautiful tonight.”
Emotion clogged her throat instantly.
“Thank you,” she whispered shakily.
His eyes darkened.
For one terrifyingly hopeful second, Lily thought he might kiss her right there in front of everyone.
Instead, Axel straightened.
Then turned toward the crowd.
“My father is right,” he announced smoothly. “Tonight is about the future of Blood Ridge.”
Lily’s pulse pounded painfully.
“This pack deserves strength beside its future alpha.”
A few people nodded approvingly.
Axel glanced at Lily again.
Then something cold entered his eyes.
So sudden.
So wrong.
Her stomach dropped.
“I know many of you assumed Lily Vale would stand beside me.”
Murmurs spread instantly through the crowd.
Lily froze.
Something inside her wolf whimpered softly.
Axel looked directly at her.
Expression sharpening.
“But let’s be honest.”
His voice carried effortlessly through the silent hall.
“She was never truly fit to be Luna.”
The words hit like a physical blow.
Lily blinked.
Confused.
The room went dead silent.
Axel continued calmly.
“She’s soft.”
A few uncomfortable laughs sounded.
“Emotional.”
More laughter.
Lily’s chest tightened painfully.
“She has no powerful bloodline. No influence. No real strength.”
Every word carved deeper.
No.
No, this wasn’t happening.
Axel stepped closer to the edge of the platform, towering over her.
“You really thought I’d choose you?”
Laughter spread through the crowd.
Sharp.
Cruel.
Humiliating.
Lily felt something inside her wolf crack.
Actually crack.
Pain exploded through her chest so violently she gasped.
The room blurred.
Axel wasn’t stopping.
“You spent years following me around like some lovesick puppy.”
More laughter.
Someone actually snorted.
Heat flooded Lily’s face in pure humiliation.
Her hands started shaking.
Axel tilted his head mockingly.
“Did you honestly believe being pretty was enough?”
Her wolf cried out inside her.
Broken.
Bleeding.
The beginning of rejection sickness clawed through her body instantly.
No.
Please no.
Not him.
Anyone but him.
Lily stared up at Axel desperately.
Searching for hesitation.
Regret.
Anything.
Instead she found amusement.
And worse—
Pity.
“I almost felt bad for you,” he said softly enough only she could hear.
That hurt more than the rest.
Because for one horrible second, Lily realized something.
He knew.
He knew she loved him.
And he was enjoying destroying her with it.
Then a woman stepped onto the platform beside him.
Tall.
Beautiful.
Dark-haired.
Selena Valehart.
Daughter of the Silver Fang alpha.
Political alliance.
Powerful bloodline.
Perfect future Luna.
The crowd immediately erupted into approving applause.
Lily felt physically sick.
Selena slid her arm possessively through Axel’s.
Smiling down at Lily with cold satisfaction.
Axel didn’t move away.
Didn’t deny it.
Didn’t look guilty.
Instead he placed his hand over Selena’s fingers publicly.
Claiming.
The final knife.
“I, Axel Blackthorne,” he announced loudly, “choose Selena Stormhart as my future mate and Luna of Blood Ridge.”
Cheers exploded through the hall.
Lily couldn’t breathe.
Her wolf screamed.
A terrible cracking agony ripped through her chest.
Rejected.
Not formally through the bond.
But emotionally.
Publicly.
Completely.
Tears burned violently behind her eyes.
Not here.
Don’t cry here.
Please.
Someone near the back laughed openly.
“She actually thought he wanted her.”
“Pathetic.”
“I told you he’d never choose an omega-blood girl.”
Lily’s vision blurred harder.
Axel looked down at her one last time.
Emotionless now.
“You should’ve known your place.”
That did it.
Something shattered inside her completely.
Lily stepped backward like she’d been struck.
The room spun violently.
Humiliation wrapped around her throat so tightly she thought she might suffocate from it.
Every stare felt like claws digging into her skin.
Pity.
Mockery.
Satisfaction.
Mara looked horrified somewhere near the crowd, but Lily couldn’t focus long enough to find her.
Her wolf had curled into itself inside her mind.
Silent.
Broken.
The pain became unbearable.
Axel turned away first.
That hurt worst of all.
Like she no longer mattered enough to look at.
Music slowly began playing again.
Conversation returned.
People moving on already.
While Lily stood there dying in front of everyone.
Selena leaned up to whisper something into Axel’s ear.
He smirked.
Smirked.
Lily felt nausea rise violently in her throat.
Then finally—
She ran.
Gasps sounded behind her.
The massive hall blurred around her as she pushed through crowds blindly.
Ignoring voices calling her name.
Ignoring the tears pouring down her face.
Ignoring the agony ripping through her chest with every heartbeat.
Outside, freezing wind slammed into her instantly.
Snow crunched beneath her shoes as she stumbled down the stone steps away from the ceremonial hall.
Away from the music.
Away from the laughter.
Away from him.
Her breathing became ragged.
Broken sobs tore from her throat before she could stop them.
Why?
Why would he do that to her?
She had loved him.
Trusted him.
Waited for him.
And he had destroyed her like it meant nothing.
Lily pressed shaking hands against her chest as pain pulsed viciously through the bond that never had the chance to fully form.
It felt like her wolf was bleeding out inside her.
The cold night air burned her lungs.
Behind her, muffled music still echoed from the celebration continuing without her.
As if her heartbreak meant absolutely nothing.
Lily collapsed to her knees in the snow.
A sob ripped out of her so painfully it barely sounded human.
The moon shone mercilessly overhead.
Bright.
Cold.
Watching everything.
“I hate you,” she whispered brokenly.
But even now—
Even shattered—
Part of her still loved him.
And that was the cruelest thing of all.
