Chapter 1

"Good day to you, Mrs. knight. Your husband is awake."

At the mention of the news, Theresa quickly sat up in the chair. Her elegant composure faltering slightly as she placed the cup of tea she had been drinking down on the table.

"Why.. I mean...are you sure it's my husband that's awake, I mean...is Conrad Knight really out of his coma?" She couldn't relax at the thought of him being back to consciousness.

"Yes, Mrs.Knight," the nurse said.

She felt the world around her spin and struggled to keep breathing properly. She let herself melt into the chair to calm down and as she stayed there, tears rolled down her cheeks.

The nurse smiled thinking she was so happy she couldn't help but cry but Theresa had another reason to cry about the whole situation. Her husband was finally awake and she was happy but that happiness could not overshadow the fear and anxiety she still felt.

"Mrs. Knight, there's no need to cry. He's in perfect condition."

She opened her eyes to see the nurse looking at her with a smile that seemed to say "you're such a loving wife" If only she knew.

"Oh thank you for letting me know." She said as she used her handkerchief to wipe away her tears.

"How exactly is he doing? What time did he wake up? Is it just now? Are you sure there are no complications? When will be be discharged?" She asked in a rush that the nurse mistook for excitement.

A giggle filled the room. "Please try to calm down, Mrs.Knight."

Theresa sighed. Staying calm was way easier said than done but there's no way the nurse would understand even if she told her that.

"I am so sorry for asking so many questions but please...just tell me what I need to know."

"You have no reason to apologize to me, I am just here to do my job. Your husband woke up about ten minutes ago and he's currently being checked by the doctor. He seemed fine when he woke up and he's been able to speak. The doctor asked me to come inform you."

"Thank you so much. I'll be on my way to his ward as soon as possible, I just need to...get myself in order."

"Okay, we'll be waiting for you then." The nurse gave her another smile as she left.

Sinking back into the chair, she placed the back of her palm on her forehead to check her temperature. She suddenly felt hot and sick like she could faint any minute or throw up.

She felt herself tear up again as a wave of pity mixed with guilt her.

Instead of staying in the comfort of the VIP section reception, she should've stayed in her husband's room. It's not like they stopped her from staying in his room.

What kind of wife was she? Deliberately staying away from him, when she should've been there for him every minute of the day. She should've been the one to announce his waking up, but she hadn't been there for him.

She stood up from the chair slowly and carefully then she moved towards the door but stopped in her tracks.

Blinking back her tears and warned herself to behave like the happy woman she was supposed to be. Her husband just woke up after weeks. She should just be happy and excited yet she felt upset.

How was it possible for a person to feel happy and sad about a situation at the same time?

One minute she wanted to call everyone she knew and happily tell them the news. The next minute, she wished her husband could go back to his comatose state for a little bit longer.

Her feeling of guilt was increasing as well. This whole thing was her fault in the first place so she had no right to not feel anything other than joy and gratitude.

Sure, she had a wedding ring and lived in comfort and wealth but she had never had her husband the way she needed to.

She brought out her phone from her bag and opened the camera to get a look at herself. Her eyes looked tired with the dark circles under them to highlight her exhaustion.

She decided to reapply her make up a but and then applied a new layer of lipgloss on her lips before she went out.

She couldn't meet her husband looking tired and unhappy. She couldn't let others see through her on a day like this.

Steeling her resolve, she finally walked out of the room and headed to see her husband.
