Summary

In the dust-choked hell of Blackthorn Gulch, where silver runs red with blood and law is just a lie men tell themselves, Elena Voss arrives as the new doctor — a woman with ice in her veins and secrets sharp enough to cut a man’s throat. She never expected him. Jax Calder. The exiled devil of the Calder gang. A gunslinger wrapped in scars and silence, with eyes like midnight and a reputation soaked in violence. They say he kills without blinking. They say no woman has ever survived wanting him. From the moment their eyes lock on a blood-soaked night, something lethal ignites between them. A pull so vicious, so consuming, it threatens to destroy them both. He watches her like a predator who’s finally found his match. She challenges him with every breath, every defiant glare, every steady hand stitching his wounds while his pulse hammers under her fingers. Every shared glance scorches deeper than a brand. Every brush of breath in the dark, every low-spoken threat, every moment their bodies are forced inches apart while bullets fly and enemies close in… burns hotter than sin itself. In a town on the edge of war, where betrayal waits behind every shadow and Elena’s violent past is closing in, Jax becomes her deadliest protector — and her greatest temptation. She is the only soul alive who can make the devil feel. He is the only man who can make her tremble without laying a single finger on her. The closer death stalks them, the more unbearable the hunger grows. Some fires don’t need touch to consume you. Some fires were born to ruin you. Burn Without Touching is a raw, blistering Western tale of obsession, protection, and forbidden hunger that will leave you breathless, aching, and desperate for the one touch they refuse to allow.

Chapter 1: Blood on Arrival

The stagecoach rattled into Blackthorn Gulch like a dying animal, wheels choking on red dust and silver-laced gravel. Elena Voss stepped down, boots sinking into the scorching earth, and felt the town’s eyes crawl over her like hungry hands. The air reeked of gunpowder, sweat, and greed. Somewhere in the distance, a gunshot cracked—sharp, final, and ignored by everyone.

She was twenty-eight, dressed in a simple black traveling gown that clung to her curves from the long, brutal journey. Her dark hair was pinned tight, but loose strands stuck to the sweat on her neck. A doctor’s bag hung heavy from her shoulder, filled with scalpels, sutures, and secrets sharp enough to slit a man’s future wide open.

Blackthorn Gulch didn’t welcome newcomers. It tested them.

“Doc Voss?” A nervous man in a faded vest approached, eyes darting. “Sheriff sent me. We got trouble at the saloon. Gunshot wound. Bad one.”

Elena didn’t hesitate. She followed him through the crowded street, feeling the weight of every stare. Men paused mid-drink. Women narrowed their eyes. The heat pressed against her skin like a warning.

Inside the Devil’s Den Saloon, chaos had cooled into grim silence. A man lay sprawled across a table, blood soaking through his shirt in a dark, spreading bloom. Elena moved fast, cutting away fabric with practiced precision. Her hands were steady—always steady—even as the metallic scent of blood filled her lungs.

“He’s losing too much,” she said coldly. “Hold him down.”

That was when the air changed.

The double doors swung open with a low creak. Every man in the saloon tensed. Elena felt it before she saw him—a shift in the pressure, like the moment before lightning strikes.

He filled the doorway.

Jax Calder.

Six-foot-three of coiled danger wrapped in black dusters and worn leather. His broad shoulders carried the kind of stillness that came only from knowing exactly how fast he could kill. Dark hair fell over a scarred brow. His jaw was sharp enough to cut glass. But it was his eyes—storm-gray, unblinking, and utterly merciless—that pinned her in place.

Their gazes collided.

For one endless second, the entire saloon disappeared. Elena felt it like a physical touch: a slow, dragging heat that started low in her belly and clawed upward, stealing her breath. His stare dragged down her body—slow, deliberate—tracing the line of her throat, the rise of her breasts beneath the fabric, the way her fingers pressed into the wounded man’s flesh. When his eyes returned to hers, something feral flickered in them.

He didn’t speak. He didn’t need to.

Elena tore her gaze away first, forcing her attention back to the bleeding man. Her pulse hammered against her ribs so violently she was sure he could see it.

“Someone press here,” she ordered, voice sharper than intended.

Jax moved.

He stepped beside her without a word, close enough that the heat of his body bled through her sleeve. His large, calloused hand came down over hers on the wound, pressing hard. Their fingers overlapped. Not quite laced. Not quite touching skin to skin. But close enough that she felt the rough scrape of his knuckles and the steady thunder of his pulse.

Elena’s breath hitched.

“Look at me, Doctor,” he said. His voice was low, rough, like gravel under a boot. It slid down her spine like warm whiskey.

She looked.

Up close, he was devastating. A thin scar cut through his left eyebrow. His lips were full, cruel, and slightly parted. The scent of him—gun oil, leather, smoke, and something darker—wrapped around her like a threat.

“You new?” he asked, eyes never leaving hers.

“Yes.” Her voice came out steadier than she felt. “And you’re bleeding too.”

A shallow gash ran along his forearm, half-hidden by his sleeve. He hadn’t even flinched.

Jax’s mouth twitched—just barely. “Not important.”

“It is to me.” She held his stare, refusing to yield even an inch. The air between them thickened, heavy and electric. Every breath they took seemed to pull them closer without either of them moving. She could feel the heat radiating from his chest. Could see the way his throat worked when he swallowed.

For one reckless moment, Elena wondered what that throat would feel like under her fingertips.

The wounded man groaned, breaking the spell.

She worked faster, aware of Jax’s eyes on her the entire time—watching her hands, her mouth, the tiny bead of sweat sliding down her collarbone. Every stitch she placed felt like foreplay. Every time her arm brushed his, the contact burned straight through cloth and skin and bone.

When she finally tied off the last suture, Jax slowly withdrew his hand. The absence felt obscene.

He leaned in just enough that his breath ghosted the shell of her ear.

“Welcome to Blackthorn, Doc,” he murmured, so low only she could hear. “Try not to die too quick.”

Then he straightened, gave her one last scorching look that promised hell and heaven in equal measure, and walked out without another word.

Elena’s hands trembled—only once—after he left.

Outside, the wind howled through the gulch like a warning.

She didn’t know it yet, but Jax Calder had just marked her.

And Blackthorn Gulch had already chosen its next blood price.
