Introduction to the world of Vaelarys
Nomenclature of the People:The name of the race is Vaelarys (singular: Vaelar).
Physical Appearance:- Build and Height: Tall and extraordinarily slender, with long, tapered limbs. Their figure is elegant and androgynous, devoid of binary sexual markers as humans understand them (the Vaelar are hermaphrodites). Their movements are fluid, graceful, almost hypnotic, whether walking or performing everyday gestures.
- Skin and Scales:The skin is a soft blue-purple, slightly scaly. The scales are thin, smooth to the touch, and cover the entire body evenly, becoming slightly denser on the shoulders, along the back, and on the forearms.
- Tail:About thirty centimetres long, it is prehensile and incredibly expressive; it is an infallible barometer of their mood:
Head and Face: - Ears: Long, pointed, mobile and highly expressive. - Eyes: Large and slightly elongated outward; they may have purple, amber or pink eyes. - Absence of hair: they are completely glabrous and have no eyebrows. - Mouth and Tongue: The tongue is slightly longer than a human’s, pale violet.- Hair: Long, straight, usually black or white.
Their language is called Sylvan (for convenience, we will write it in English).- Useful terms: - “Ael’thir” (pron. Ael-thir): The common greeting, literally “Light in your eyes”. - “Kyr’vash” (pron. Kir-vash): The “current of feeling”, their extrasensory perception.
Life Cycle and Parenthood: they can live 300 yearsBeing hermaphrodites, procreation is an act of shared choice.
- The Parental Bond: When two Vaelarys decide to generate, one takes the role of Sha’len (The One Who Sustains the Light – carries the pregnancy in the fertile anus) and the other of Kyr’len (The One Who Kindles the Light). Often the roles are reversed over the course of their lives.
- Extended Family: There are no “mothers” or “fathers” as we understand them. Children are raised by the entire community of the Thal’mar (the village/common den).At the top of the Thal’mar are the Mahr’Kyr (Guardians of the Balance), spiritual and decision-making figures.
Technology and Spirituality- Organic Technology: They do not use metal or plastic. They grow structures from Ossidra trees, a coral-like plant that grows into the desired shape if “sung” to for years. Their homes are woven Ossidra shells.
- The Skin Song: Their scaly blue-purple skin is not just a casing. It is a sensory organ that reacts to emotions and the planet’s electric fields. When they feel joy, the scales vibrate slightly, emitting a sound a kind of “heart shimmer”.
- The Tail: It is used to cling to Ossidra branches during sleep (they sleep suspended, as in plant hammocks).
- The Skirt (Kel’vara): The Vaelar do not wear full garments, only a small skirt called Kel’vara that covers their private parts. The color and texture of the fibers indicate the mood or the day’s activity. - White/Ivory: Intellectual activity, meditation, counsel. - Green/Moss: Plant care, harvest, connection with the earth. - Dark Purple: Travel, exploration, potential danger.
Tongue:It is prehensile enough to clean a leaf or weave a knot without using hands.
- Bactericidal Saliva (Ith’sal): Literally “Water of the Skin”. It contains symbiotic enzymes and bacteriophages that sterilize and accelerate the coagulation of their life lymph (not red blood, but a silvery and luminescent fluid called Lyth).
- Social Implication: Licking another Vaelar’s wound is a gesture of deep intimacy and trust. It is not just any medical act, but a Shared Healing Rite. A parent does it for a child, a traveling companion for the other. Doing it in public is as normal as us putting on a band-aid, but the exchange of Ith’sal creates a temporary olfactory bond.
