Kepler-16 b
Helios Reach Station entered full operation in 2234, becoming the Concordat’s first permanent platform within a binary star system. Officially, its mission was to study the atmosphere of Kepler-16b and its frozen moons. Yet within only a few months, the station’s psychological reports began attracting nearly as much attention as its scientific discoveries.
The human mind, it turned out, had never been designed for a sky with two suns.
From the observation dome, the Kepler-16 system appeared both majestic and deeply unsettling. Above the enormous striped disk of the gas giant — a world that consumed half the sky — two stars drifted through the darkness: one large and amber-orange, the other smaller and dimly crimson. They seemed locked in an endless celestial dance. At times they nearly merged into a single blinding flare; at others they drifted apart by several degrees, casting double shadows across the station.
Helios Reach raced above the planet’s atmosphere in an ultra-low orbit, completing a full revolution every three hours and twenty-four minutes.
Sunsets did not arrive gently here as they did on Earth.
The edge of the planet simply began swallowing the stars one after another. First one vanished, and the station’s lighting changed instantly — the crimson shadows disappeared, the metal corridors faded into dull orange, and the great disk of the planet suddenly looked strangely flat. Then the second star slipped beneath the horizon, drowning in atmospheric clouds illuminated by its already vanished companion, and the station fell into night.
Ninety minutes later, another dawn would come.
Always different.
Sometimes both stars rose together, erupting over the planetary horizon in twin golden fire. Sometimes the orange star appeared first, followed minutes later by the red dwarf, bathing the station’s white corridors in anxious copper light. Once every few weeks, the red dwarf crossed the face of its companion, plunging all of Helios Reach into a strange dim half-light.
By the third month of the mission, engineer Ethan Reid began complaining of insomnia. He claimed he could no longer feel the passage of time.
“It’s like the station doesn’t live in one day anymore,” he told Anna Kowalski, the station psychologist, during another eclipse cycle. “It lives in several at once.”
Anna understood exactly what he meant.
She herself often felt that the brain was desperately trying to find a familiar earthly rhythm in the movement of the two suns — and failing. The shadows changed too quickly. The sky itself felt unstable.
Even the hydroponic gardens had to be maintained under entirely artificial lighting. The natural light of the Kepler-16 system disrupted photosynthesis in Earth plants and destabilized their growth cycles.
One year after the mission began, Concordat psychologists officially entered the condition into the medical registry as F.99.2 — Adaptive Disorder Related to Exolight Environment.
The symptoms were nearly universal:
loss of temporal perception, heightened anxiety during eclipses, sleep disorders, and an obsessive urge to watch the movement of the stars.
Some crew members spent hours in the observation dome, silently watching the twin suns wheel through their endless cosmic dance before slowly disappearing behind the curve of the planet. Others avoided the dome entirely.
But the strangest effect came later.
After several years aboard the station, many astronauts admitted that Earth’s sky no longer felt “correct” to them.
One sun seemed insufficient.Too simple.Too lonely.
Astro-navigator Samantha Reid wrote in her journal:
“When both stars disappear beyond the horizon of Kepler-16b, the station sinks into darkness. And every time, it feels as though the Universe itself has frozen into stillness.
Then the first sun appears.
Then the second.
And only then does the world become normal again.”
Helios Reach remains operational to this day. Its crews rotate every fourteen months. Nearly all returning personnel report the same strange sensation during their first weeks back on Earth:
the Sun feels unbearably alone.
