CHAPTER ONE — BLACKMERE STORM NIGHT
PAGE 1
Rain crashed violently against the tall windows of Blackmere Manor.
Thunder rolled across the northern cliffs of England like something alive.
The manor stood alone between forests and fog—old stone, wide halls, and warm lights fighting against the storm outside.
Inside the dining hall, chaos ruled.
“FINN STOP THROWING BREAD.”
“I WAS AIMING FOR ROWAN.”
“That does not make it better.”
Christine Vale sat at the long table, quietly watching the disaster unfold. She was twelve years old, calm-faced, and usually the only one not fully participating in the noise.
Finn launched another bread roll.
Rowan dodged dramatically.
“You fight like an angry squirrel.”
“I’ll show you angry squirrel.”
---

Marcus Vale lowered his newspaper without looking up.
“If someone destroys my soup again, I am removing dinner privileges permanently.”
Rowan replied immediately.
“You say that every week.”
Eleanor Vale walked between them carrying plates, looking exhausted but used to it.
“Can we please have one normal meal?”
At that exact moment—
Noah knocked over a full glass of water.
It spilled across the table.
Silence.
Marcus closed his eyes.
“…I regret speaking.”
Christine laughed softly into her hand.
For a moment, everything felt normal.
Safe.
---
PAGE 3
Later that night, the storm grew heavier.
The manor library became the center of the house.
Finn and Rowan argued over cards on the floor.
Elias sat reading near the fireplace.
Noah followed Christine around carrying books she did not ask for.
“You don’t have to follow me,” Christine said.
Noah shrugged.
“I like it.”
Rowan pointed at him.
“That is because Noah is the only functional person here.”
Finn threw a pillow at him immediately.
---
PAGE 4
Elias suddenly looked up from his book.
“…Did anyone hear that?”
The room went quiet.
Wind pressed against the windows.
Then—
CAW.
A bird’s cry cut through the storm.
Noah frowned.
“That sounded wrong.”
Another CAW followed.
Closer.
Christine slowly stood.
Something in the air changed.
---
PAGE 5
A giant raven landed outside the library window.
Its feathers shimmered black and silver under lightning flashes.
Its eyes locked directly onto Christine.
Finn leaned closer.
“Why is it staring at her?”
The raven struck the glass.
CRACK.
Eleanor froze instantly.
Marcus stood up slowly.
“No…”
Christine stepped back slightly.
“What is that?”
No one answered.
The raven struck again.
BOOM.
The glass shattered.
---
PAGE 6
Wind exploded into the library.
Books flew off shelves.
Candles went out instantly.
The raven stepped inside calmly.
Not aggressive.
Not afraid.
Around its neck was a black envelope sealed with silver wax.
Christine Vale.
Written clearly.
Noah grabbed Christine’s arm.
“…Chris?”
Christine slowly reached forward.
The moment she touched it—
The raven turned into smoke.
---
PAGE 7
The smoke twisted violently through the air.
Noah stepped back in shock.
The smoke condensed.
And became a boy.
Around thirteen.
Tall.
Pale.
Dark hair.
Grey eyes.
Strange silver markings on his sleeves.
“My name is Sylas Ravaryn.”
Silence filled the room.
Rowan pointed slowly.
“The bird was a person.”
Sylas blinked.
“That is not the correct order of explanation.”
Christine frowned.
“You were the bird.”
“Yes.”
“That is concerning.”
---
PAGE 8
Marcus stepped between Christine and Sylas.
“Why are you here?”
Sylas looked at him directly.
“The Veil is weakening.”
Eleanor went pale.
Christine noticed immediately.
“You know him.”
Marcus hesitated.
“We hoped this would not happen yet.”
Christine tightened her grip on the envelope.
“What is happening?”
Sylas turned toward the fireplace.
“Something old is calling.”
The fire changed color.
Blue.
Unnatural.
---
PAGE 9
The entire fireplace erupted.
Not fire.
Light.
The stone floor cracked open.
Black iron gates rose from beneath the flames.
Silver markings crawled across them like living patterns.
Noah stepped backward.
“…This is not normal.”
The gates slowly opened.
A world appeared beyond them.
---
PAGE 10
Floating landmasses drifted in a sky filled with storms.
Castles hovered above clouds.
Lightning moved in controlled patterns across the horizon.
Christine stared.
“…That’s real?”
Sylas stood beside her.
“Yes.”
Marcus spoke quietly.
“Your parents came from there.”
Christine turned sharply.
“I don’t know anything about my parents.”
Eleanor looked away.
“They were taken from that world.”
---
PAGE 11
Sylas continued.
“They were part of Velmora bloodline.”
Finn blinked.
“That sounds expensive.”
Elias stayed silent.
Christine looked at the glowing world beyond the gate.
“Why would anyone want me?”
Sylas answered simply.
“Because the balance is breaking again.”
The storm beyond the gate shifted.
Something moved far in the distance.
Watching.
---
PAGE 12
Noah held Christine tightly.
“You don’t have to go.”
Christine hesitated.
For the first time, she looked unsure.
Rowan spoke quietly.
“If you go, you better come back.”
Finn crossed his arms.
“And if you don’t, I’m blaming magic.”
Christine gave a small smile.
Eleanor stepped forward.
“You will always have a home here.”
Marcus placed a compass into Christine’s hand.
“It belonged to your mother.”
---
PAGE 13
Christine looked at the compass.
It pulsed faintly in her palm.
She looked at Sylas.
“You are still extremely weird.”
Sylas replied.
“That is fair.”
The gates behind him shifted again.
The storm beyond became stronger.
Waiting.
---
PAGE 14
Sylas extended his hand.
Christine looked back at her family.
At the warm light of Blackmere Manor.
At everything she knew.
Then she stepped forward.
Into the storm.
Into the unknown world beyond.
And the gates closed behind her.
