(PART 1) Chapter 1 — The Town That Watched

Rain fell over Blackthorn Ridge in silver sheets as eighteen-year-old Lena Vale stepped off the bus with one suitcase and a growing sense that she had made a terrible mistake.

The town looked frozen in time.

Old brick buildings lined the streets beneath flickering lamps. A giant clock tower stood in the center of town, its hands unmoving at 11:17. Storefronts were still open despite the late hour, but nobody smiled. Nobody laughed. Even conversations were held in hushed voices, as if the town itself were listening.

Lena tightened her grip on her suitcase.

The scholarship to Hollowmere University had felt like a miracle. After years of moving between foster homes, she had wanted one thing: a fresh start. A place where nobody knew her.

But the moment she arrived in Blackthorn Ridge, something felt wrong.

A police siren echoed in the distance.

Nobody reacted.

The bus driver quickly unloaded her bag before climbing back inside.

“You should get indoors before midnight,” he muttered.

Lena frowned. “Why?”

The man avoided her eyes.

“Just trust me.”

The bus doors hissed shut.

Within seconds, the vehicle disappeared into the rain.

Leaving Lena completely alone.

A cold wind swept through the street.

Then the clock tower chimed.

11:30.

Every person nearby immediately began locking doors.

Metal shutters slammed down over windows.

Street vendors vanished.

A woman hurrying with groceries across the road whispered prayers under her breath.

Lena stared in confusion.

“What is happening?”

“You’re new.”

The voice came from behind her.

Lena turned sharply.

A boy leaned against the entrance of a closed bookstore, arms crossed. He looked around her age, dressed in black jeans and a dark coat despite the warm weather. Wet strands of dark hair hung over sharp gray eyes.

Something was unsettling about him.

Not dangerous.

Just… unreadable.

“Yes,” Lena answered cautiously.

“You should move.”

“Why does everyone keep saying that?”

The boy glanced toward the clock tower.

“Because midnight is close.”

“That doesn’t explain anything.”

“It will in ten minutes.”

Thunder cracked overhead.

The lights across the street suddenly died.

One by one.

Darkness swallowed the road.

Lena felt her stomach tighten.

The boy pushed himself away from the wall.

“What’s your name?” he asked.

“Lena.”

“I’m Rowan.”

Another distant siren echoed.

Except this one sounded wrong.

Too distorted.

Almost like screaming.

Rowan’s expression hardened.

“We need to go. Now.”

Before Lena could respond, something moved across the rooftop above them.

Fast.

Impossible.

A shadow leapt between buildings.

Lena froze.

Her breath caught as glowing silver eyes stared down at her from the darkness.

Human eyes did not glow.

The creature smiled.

Sharp fangs gleamed beneath the rain.

Rowan grabbed Lena’s wrist.

“Run.”

The creature dropped from the rooftop.
