Chapter 1
Diana POV
I was speechless. I reread the email again and again, and tears flood my eyes as I stare at the message in the screen that would change my life forever.
" Congratulations! We are pleased to inform you that you have successfully met our criteria based on your performance during the recent interview for the position of Cabin Crew. Attached to this email is your conditional offer letter..."
I screamed at the message, and I could heat my mom yelling behind me.
" Why the hell are you screaming like a crazy person? Your grandmother is sleeping, and you know she has had a migraine since this morning!"
I covered my mouth but still smiling like crazy as I turned around and hugged my mom. I was giggling nonstop.
"What is it, child? Before I whacked your head and made you sane again. What is it?"
I backed away, knowing her threats were real, and showed her the message.
"I got it, mummy. I passed the interview."
Her eyes widen, and her mouth opens.
" Malaysian Airways? You got it?"
" Yes, mom! Yess! Oh my God, mom. Finally, after many tries. I got it!" I hugged her again, and I heard her laugh in joy as she gently slaps my back.
" See. I told you, you will get it. Sure, I don't like you starving yourself, but if it works, then I'm glad, child."
God knows not eating for a week, just drinking water and having small bites of every meal my mom cooks was hard. Mommy's food is always delicious and I constantly pushes her to open a restaurant but now that she has retires and at times, takes care of my grandma and enjoys spending time with my sister and brother's children - she prefers peace and enjoys being unemployed - according to her.
From 66kg to 56 in one month , I finally understand the meaning of torture, but it was all worth it.
It has been my dream to join the airline world right after university, but when Covid happened, all my plans went down the drain. Two years after university, I joined a government program to earn some pocket money, and with working from home, I began to gain weight.
Being 158 and in that weight, I was rejected constantly when I tried for local airlines, so when I started my weight loss journey, I was fully disciplined, and it all pays off.
Meanwhile, many things happen during Covid. My older sister and brother's got married, have kids, and my house was chaos in the midst of the silent street.
I'm not sure what my mom meant when she says retiring to spend time with all the little demons is peace, but that's her choice. Whatever makes her happy, I guess.
" You know where to live and how to get work in Kuala Lumpur?"
I raised my brow, remembering that as we discussed on these topics, if I pass the interview this time.
I quickly scrolled through my phone to see what I note down the other day and replied, " I saved a few choices for apartments and homes, some feeder and even got some contacts from a few of the girls who passed so yeah, I'll check into that soon, mummy. No worries."
She nodded.
" Okay, good then. Look into it and tell Mr what you decide. I go cook for your grandma first."
She left to the kitchen and I immediately went to whatsapp to tell my best friend in the whole wide world of what I have received.
My smile drops when I see a notification from my archived folder. It was empty before, and when I clicked it open, I saw Joshua's name - my ex.
One of my reasons to want to leave Sarawak.
I cursed when I opened his chat, seeing I didn't switch off my seen setting.
I rolled my eyes. I didn't really care about that.
Why is he asking if I was available for dinner when he could bring the girl he cheated on me with to one is beyond me.
What's with man who thinks woman can just forget seeing another woman opened his apartment door half naked with her boyfriend following the woman from behind?
There's a special place in hell for Joshua, and I pray to God He feels the same way, too.
I ignored his message and went to set a McDonald dates with my soul sister Lyana.
....
" I can't believe it. After all this while, you got it. You really fucking got it."
I frowned and slapped her playfully as she laugh.
" What's with that surprise for? If after losing 10 kg in one month I still don't get it, I would've burn the whole company to the ground."
Lyana laughed.
" Duh, I know. I'm just playing with you. I'm so happy for your, girl and you know what I want right?"
A gleam in her eyes making me grinned to and we high five. " Discount ticket baby. Hell yeah." We yelled together.
" I can't believe it. I'm finally living the dream. I mean, it sucks I didn't get to do it after degree because of the covid but man, I can finally be like my sister and travel the world, earn big money and hey - wearing that uniform is like a dream come true. Jesus."
" Not to mention marrying a pilot and have two healthy sons, huh?" Lyana grinned and moved her brows.
I rolled my eyes.
" Nope. Not for me. I want money and travel. That's it. I'm done with man and I want to be far away from them as much as possible."
Lyana chuckled. " Come on Diana. Don't let one asshole destroy your dream of happily ever after. There's more man in Kuala Lumpur. You're half Indian, half Iban. You're gorgeous. You'll standout and you can even build a harem."
" You read too many weird novels, Lyana. Don't be crazy. I'm telling you, man are all the same. KL man? Ugh, they are a different kind of breed. Wilder and more pervert and you know my goals in life right?"
" Yeay, yeay. To only give your virginity to your husband. I know. But then again, you'll be alone in Kuala Lumpur. The temptation is real, my friend. The clubs, the people, the sex - you have to be careful."
" Hey, I have lived 26 years in Kuching- as a Dayak and never drank in my life or have sex. Another 26 more in KL won't change that _"
" Unless you get married or mix with the wrong crowd. I'm telling you, KL is not for the weak my friend."
I smiled.
" I'll be fine, Na. I can take care of myself."
" I hope so. He still contact you btw?"
My smiled drops and I nodded slowly.
" You going to tell him?"
" What? Why would I tell him anything? He loses the right to know anything about my life when he did that. He can go to hell for all I care."
"Diana... girl, you liked him so much. I know it hurts
.."
" Nah, not that hurt." I waved my hand at her.
" Not like I was in love with him. I mean he's a doctor, he's my brother's good friend, a catholic and he handsome- I thought he and I would be a perfect until I caught him. To be honest, I wasn't that invested. Just hurt I was treated that way like who does that after telling another person you see a life with them?"
Lyana nods her shoulder.
"If you say so, then."
She bend forward across the table from me and hugged me.
" I'm gonna miss you so much though. Who will share lunch with me and bitch with me about anything? Jog with me or even watch a movie with me? Life gonna be shit after this, I just know."
I tapped her back laughing.
" Stop that. Everything will be fine. Stop overthinking things. Think of the bright side, the cheap tickets, the money and exploring KL fully and not just a short stay to visit my sister - it's and adventure I can't wait to experience, love."
" Yeah but you have to be careful, Na. Like I said, KL is not for the weak. You need to be strong willed and able to handle the temptation strongly. You think you can survive that?"
I smiled and nodded. " I know I can. I promise."
Liyana shook her head, " No, no. Just a promise, don't count. KL is a jungle, Na. You either survive it, be defeated, or you become a part of it, and the last two is not what we want you to do."
I frowned, crossed my arms, and replied, " You sure have such little faith in me. You know how hot-headed, brave and strong I am - physically and if God wills it, mentally. You can't be saying these things. it's like you're manifesting it. Stop. Have faith and know that I am strong, okay? Don't worry about me, I will be fine."
I had no idea how naive I was
