Unlikable

Summary

Kehlani believes she is inherently unlikable. At school, she is bullied by her peers because of her dark clothing and withdrawn personality. Her difficult behavior is rooted in a painful childhood; she was raised from an early age by a father who abandoned her, and that abandonment left lasting emotional scars. Fearing she will repeat her father's mistakes, her mother keeps a strict hold on her, which only deepens Kehlani's sense of being controlled and misunderstood. In her desperation for relief, Kehlani begins to self-harm until her mother has her committed. Everything changes when Kehlani insists on seeing her father. Once reunited with him, she is released, moves in with him and his wife, and eventually meets someone who could become a romantic interest. As for whether Kehlani can become likable, yes - absolutely.

Note to my Reader

Hey... I don’t know everything you’re carrying right now, but I can feel that it’s heavy. And I want you to know you don’t have to hold all of that alone.

If your thoughts have been getting dark or overwhelming, please don’t believe the lie that you’re a burden or that things won’t change. Feelings can be incredibly convincing, but they are not permanent. What you’re going through right now is a moment, even if it feels endless.

You matter more than you probably realize. Not just in some distant, abstract way—but in real, tangible ways. The way you exist in the world, the space you take up, the impact you’ve already had... it all counts.

You don’t have to have everything figured out today. You don’t even have to fix anything right now. Just focus on getting through this moment, one breath at a time. That is enough.

Please consider reaching out to someone you trust, even if it feels hard. And if you can’t think of anyone, there are people who care and will listen without judgment. You deserve support, not silence.

If you or anyone you know are have suicidal thoughts please... Please call the suicide hotline at 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline
