Chapter 1: The Canvas and the Billboard
The cafeteria of Hanji High School during the lunch rush was a chaotic ecosystem governed by noise, the sharp scent of greasy tteokbokki, and rigid, unwritten social hierarchies.
To Han Danbi, it felt like navigating a battlefield without a shield. She kept her head down, her oversized school blazer pulled tight around her small frame, her right hand clutching her current lifeline: an A4-sized, charcoal-stained croquis sketchbook.
She always sat at the isolated corner table near the recycling bins—a place where the fluorescent lights flickered just enough to discourage anyone else from lingering. It was the perfect blind spot. From here, she could observe the world without ever being a part of it.
Her charcoal stick flew across the rough paper, capturing the swift, fluid motion of a stray calico cat that frequently napped on the windowsill just outside. While other girls her age discussed skin-care routines, upcoming college entrance exams, or the latest idol survival shows, Danbi found solace in the weight of a heavy line, the gradient of a shadow, and the absolute predictability of a blank page.
In her notebook, she was in control. In reality, she was the class ghost, a quiet girl drowning under the suffocating weight of her mother’s academic expectations and her own paralyzing low self-esteem
“Just make it through the year unnoticed,” she whispered her daily mantra to herself, smudging a line with her thumb to soften the gradient of the cat's fur. “Be invisible. Invisible means safe.”
"Look, look! It's Cha Taeyoon!"
The sudden, collective shift in the cafeteria’s ambient volume was instantaneous. The heavy double doors swung open, and the crowd naturally parted as if adhering to a physical law of the universe.
Cha Taeyoon walked in, his hands shoved deep into his uniform pockets. He didn't wear his school blazer; instead, he wore an oversized black streetwear hoodie that clashed beautifully with the school’s strict dress code—a privilege afforded only to someone whose face currently occupied a massive three-story digital billboard outside the COEX mall downtown
.As a part-time model for Veloce, the country's fastest-growing youth apparel brand, he possessed an almost unfair physical presence. He was 187 centimeters of broad shoulders and lean muscle. His dark hair fell in artfully messy layers across his forehead, casting sharp shadows over a remarkably defined jawline and intense, feline eyes that made most students look away in sheer intimidation.
"He looks so moody today," a girl at a nearby table whispered loudly, clutching her phone as if debating whether to take a stealthy photo. "Did you see his latest winter campaign photoshoot? He looks like a cold-blooded villain. So hot."
Danbi glanced up briefly from her sketch, her eyes tracking him out of pure, artistic habit. To the rest of the school, Taeyoon was an unapproachable deity. To Danbi, he was an incredibly fascinating study of contrasting lines, high-contrast lighting, and dynamic anatomy.
But as she watched him navigate the crowded room, she noticed things others completely missed. She noticed the slight, nervous twitch of his left thumb against the fabric of his pocket. She noticed the way his straight shoulders subtly slumped when a group of loud seniors called out his name, and the fact that despite his fierce, aloof expression, he looked completely overwhelmed by the choice between banana milk and apple juice at the beverage counter.
He’s not moody, Danbi thought dryly, her charcoal scratching against the paper, capturing the sharp angle of his jawline almost automatically on the margin of her page. He’s just completely spaced out. He looks like he forgot his wallet.
In reality, Cha Taeyoon was fighting for his life.
Behind his cool, untouchable facade, his internal monologue was a chaotic mess. “Don't trip over the chair leg. Do not trip. If you trip in front of two hundred people, Kang Minwoo will never let you live it down. Why is everyone staring? Did I get toothpaste on my collar? Man, I just wanted a ham and cheese toastie, why is the line so long?”
Taeyoon hated the staring. He hated the billboards. He felt like an imposter wearing expensive clothes he couldn't afford to buy himself, modeling a lifestyle he didn't understand, while his grades slowly tanked and his future loomed like a dark, uncertain cloud. He felt real only when he was hiding away from the cameras.
"Hey! Watch out!"
A sudden explosion of laughter from the basketball team’s table shattered the cafeteria's rhythm. A rogue, poorly aimed milk carton flew through the air after a chaotic game of tabletop sports, striking the sharp edge of Danbi’s table.
The impact didn't hurt her, but it startled her badly. Her fingers slipped, her grip loosened, and her heavy sketchbook slid right off the slick plastic surface, spinning across the polished linoleum floor.
Time seemed to slow down to a horrifying crawl. The sketchbook landed open-faced, sliding right into the center of the main walking aisle. And executing a perfect, heavy stride directly toward it was Cha Taeyoon.
"No, no, please don't step on it," Danbi whispered under her breath, her heart hammering violently against her ribs. Her voice was entirely swallowed by the cafeteria noise. She scrambled out of her seat, her face burning with immediate, intense embarrassment.
Taeyoon’s sneaker paused exactly two inches above the open page.
The entire cafeteria went dead silent. Dozens of eyes shifted from the school celebrity down to the messy, charcoal-smeared notebook on the floor.
Taeyoon blinked, his intense gaze dropping down. He expected a textbook, or maybe a messy binder of math notes. Instead, he found himself looking at a startingly detailed, raw, and beautiful sketch of the stray calico cat, rendered with dynamic, emotional strokes that made the creature look alive, contrasted against a faint, blurred background of a chaotic school hallway. And right in the margin, drawn with quick, sharp precision, was a sketch of his own face—spaced out, human, and vulnerable.
Slowly, deliberately, Taeyoon bent his long frame down. His large, pale hand, marked by a silver ring on his index finger, reached down and picked up the sketchbook by its spiral edges. He didn't drop it. He didn't look annoyed. Instead, he stared at the drawings, his lips parting slightly.
Danbi stood frozen a mere five feet away, her hands trembling against her uniform skirt. She felt completely naked. Her deepest, most guarded secret—her art, her raw perspective of the world—was currently being held by the most popular, intimidating boy in school. She could hear the whispers starting up around them.
“Is that Han Danbi’s?”
“What is that? Did she draw him? Is she a stalker?”
“Oh my god, she’s dead. Taeyoon hates when people take photos of him without permission, let alone draw him.”
"Is this yours?"Taeyoon asked.
His voice was deeper than she expected, a resonant, smooth baritone that echoed clearly in the silent room. He turned the book around, holding it between them, his eyes locked onto her.
"I—yes," Danbi managed to choke out, her voice barely a squeak. She kept her eyes fixed firmly on his chin, utterly unable to meet his gaze. The heat in her cheeks was so intense she thought she might spontaneously combust. "I'm sorry it got in your way. I'll take it back. I'll erase... I'll erase that part.
"She reached out, her small hand shaking as she tried to grasp the top of the spiral binding. She just wanted to grab it, run to the girls' bathroom, and lock herself in a stall until graduation.
But Taeyoon didn't let go. He held his grip, his eyes shifting from the drawing directly to her face.
Up close, Danbi could see things the billboard didn't capture. His eyes weren't cold at all. They were wide, slightly frantic, and burning with an intense, unreadable curiosity. And to her utter bewilderment, a faint, unmistakable pink hue was rapidly spreading from the tips of his ears down to his hoodie collar.
“Oh my god,” Taeyoon’s internal voice was screaming. “It’s her. It’s the girl from the window. The turtle girl. She draws... me? She sees me like this? Not like a model, but just... me?” His heart was beating so hard against his ribs he was terrified she could hear it. His cool guy defense mechanism, cultivated over two years of high-pressure modeling agencies, took over before his brain could stop it.
The silence stretched for five agonizing seconds. The entire student body watched, holding its collective breath.
Instead of throwing it away or mocking her, Taeyoon’s grip tightened on the cardboard cover. He leaned down slightly, bringing his face directly into her line of sight, forcing her to look into his dark, mesmerizing eyes.
"So, you're the one," Taeyoon murmured, his voice dropping into a private, quiet register that only she could hear over the hum of the cafeteria. "You're the one who looks at the world like this."
Danbi’s breath hitched. "What?"
"I'm keeping this for today," Taeyoon declared boldly, a sudden, entirely uncharacteristic smirk breaking across his handsome face, though his ears were now a violent shade of red. He tucked her precious sketchbook tightly under his arm. "If you want it back, Han Danbi... you'll have to come find me after school."He turned on his heel and walked straight out of the double doors, his heart hammering a frantic rhythm against his chest, leaving the entire room—and an utterly catatonic Han Danbi—frozen in absolute shock.

You have a way of describing things to the T. Such attention and describing the smallest elements. I really hope you land something with Netflix, Amazon, Hulu or whatever. Because these apps needs some new stories and movies. I feel like they play the same o.
