Chapter 1

A Night Shift With Madam Rebecca

That afternoon, we had a visitor in our house for the very first time.

Even though I had been hearing her name from my mother for years, I had never actually seen her before. Anytime my mum mentioned her, she always said the same thing.

"She is my closest friend."

That day, I wasn’t at home when she arrived. I had gone out to play football with some guys along the street. By the time I returned, my body was covered in sweat and dust. My clothes were terribly dirty, and all I wanted was to rush inside and clean up.

As soon as I entered the sitting room, I met my mother seated with a woman I had never seen before. They were already deep in conversation before I walked in.

I greeted my mother first before turning my eyes toward the woman beside her.

She looked around my mother’s age, though she appeared younger and more attractive. She was only slightly fatter than my mum, but there was something elegant about her. The kind of beauty that quietly pulls attention without even trying.

The moment our eyes met, I felt something strange inside me. It was as if I had seen her somewhere before.

I quickly greeted her.

“Good afternoon, ma.”

She smiled warmly.

“Good afternoon, my dear.”

That smile stayed in my head for a moment longer than it should have.

I didn’t say anything else. I simply hurried to my room, removed my dirty clothes, and went straight to the bathroom.

By the time I came back outside, the woman had already left.

I looked at my mother.

“Mum, who was that?”

“She is Rebecca,” my mother replied. “My closest friend.”

I whistled softly.

“Wow… she’s really beautiful.”

Immediately, my mother gave me a sharp look.

“Daniel, you shouldn’t say things like that.”

I laughed lightly, but her expression remained serious.

“You know you’re a silly boy,” she continued. “And I don’t want you anywhere close to Rebecca.”

Her words confused me.

“But Mum, you just said she’s your closest friend. Why are you warning me?”

She ignored the question completely.

“Just stay away from her,” she said firmly.

That was all.

I couldn’t stop thinking about it afterward. The way Rebecca had looked at me… the strange feeling in her eyes… it all lingered in my mind.

For a second, it almost felt romantic.

But I brushed the thought aside. Maybe she was simply being friendly.

Later that evening, I returned to my room and lay on my bed, pressing my phone lazily. Not long after, my girlfriend Christy called me.

I picked up immediately.

She told me she wanted to see me near Dull Hotel, our usual hangout spot whenever we wanted privacy or just needed time together.

As soon as the call ended, I dressed up quickly. My mother wasn’t in her room at the time, so I simply called her while already on the road.

I lied and told her I was handling something outside. I didn’t mention Christy.

By the time I arrived at the hotel, the evening sky was already turning dark. It was almost 7 p.m.

Christy was standing near the gate waiting for me.

The moment she saw me, she smiled and held my hand as we walked inside together. Soft music played gently through the building while people minded their own business around us.

We ordered food and drinks, laughed, danced a little, and enjoyed ourselves. Christy was energetic as always, always pushing me into fun I normally wouldn’t start on my own.

Later, she led me into one of the rooms upstairs where we spent more private moments together, enjoying each other’s company.

Time moved faster than expected.

By the time we stepped outside again, it was already close to 9 p.m. The hotel was becoming busier while the streets outside grew darker.

“Why don’t you sleep over tonight?” Christy suggested softly.

I shook my head immediately.

“No. My mum doesn’t even know I stayed out this long.”

Almost instantly, my phone began to ring.

It was my mother.

She asked if I had reached home already. Once again, I lied and told her something delayed me on the road, but that I would soon return.

Before ending the call, she warned me not to sleep outside.

When I told Christy I had to leave, she nodded slowly.

“No problem,” she said. “But we’ll see tomorrow, right?”

I smiled.

“Of course.”

Before leaving, we kissed once more near the entrance. She held me tightly for almost a full minute before whispering into my ear.

“Daniel… I still want more.”

I laughed softly.

“Silly girl. Tomorrow.”

She finally released me, and I left.

I got home very late that night, around 10:30 p.m.

My mother was already fast asleep, so I quietly used the spare key to unlock the door before sneaking into my room unnoticed.

The next morning, both of us overslept badly.

It was already past 11 a.m., and neither my mother nor I had stepped out of our rooms yet.

Then suddenly, a knock came from the front door.

My room was closer to the sitting room, so I heard it first. At first, I ignored it and continued pressing my phone.

Then the knock came again.

This time, I stood up and walked to the door.

The moment I opened it, I froze slightly.

Rebecca was standing right there.

She wore plain black leggings and a fitted top. Her hair was low and neatly shaved, giving her a younger appearance.

Everything about her looked perfect.

For a woman my mother’s age, her figure was unbelievable.

I greeted her immediately.

“Good morning, ma.”

She smiled softly.

“Is your mother at home?”

I nodded.

“She’s still sleeping?”

I nodded again.

Rebecca smiled once more before slowly placing her hand against my chest. Her fingers moved lightly down toward my stomach before she pulled away again.

A strange tension passed through my body instantly.

“What’s your name?” she asked.

“Daniel,” I replied quietly.

She nodded.

“I’m Rebecca.”

“My mother already told me,” I answered.

She looked at me carefully for a few seconds before speaking again.

“Hope you don’t mind if I spend some time with you someday?”

I shook my head nervously.

“No, ma.”

Then she requested my phone number, and I gave it to her without hesitation.

Before leaving, she leaned slightly closer and lowered her voice.

“Please don’t tell your mother I visited.”

I looked at her, confused.

“I didn’t really come to see her,” she whispered. “I came to see you.”

A smile escaped my face instantly.

“Alright, ma. I won’t tell her.”

She smiled one last time before turning around and walking away slowly.

And from that very moment, something inside me shifted.
