Chapter 2
A NIGHT SHIFT WITH MADAM REBECCA
( 2 )
That morning, Rebecca finally left our house after standing at the doorway for a while. Before leaving, she told me softly that she would call me later.
“Maybe anytime from now,” she said with a smile.
I simply nodded.
Then, just before turning away, she placed her fingers gently against my chest once again.
The touch sent another strange feeling through my body. I still didn’t fully understand what was happening between us or why she kept looking at me that way.
Her eyes slowly drifted downward toward my shorts, and for a few seconds, she bit softly against her lips as if fighting back a thought.
“I’ll get back to you, boy,” she whispered before finally walking away.
I remained standing at the door, watching her leave.
The movement of her body as she walked caught my attention completely. I couldn’t deny the truth to myself anymore — Rebecca was far more attractive and well-shaped than my mother.
I kept staring until she disappeared down the street.
Only then did the reality of everything return to my mind.
The way she touched my chest.
The way she looked at me.
The way her eyes slowly scanned my body.
I became speechless thinking about it.
Rebecca was old enough to be my mother. Yet everything about her behavior felt different… almost dangerous.
I kept wondering if she truly wanted something from me.
Eventually, I returned to my room and picked up my phone again. Most of the unread messages in my inbox were from Christy.
The moment I unlocked my phone, I saw her latest message waiting for me.
“Daniel, hope we are still meeting today?
I love the way you handled me yesterday. You know I’m your girlfriend and you promised to always answer whenever I need you.”
The message had been sent a few minutes earlier.
I smiled lightly before replying.
“We will see. I still remember my promise.”
By the time I sent the message, she was already offline again.
I dropped my phone and headed into the bathroom to shower. Since I was alone, I didn’t bother locking my room door. The bathroom entrance faced directly toward the room, and I simply left it open while bathing.
A few moments later, my room door suddenly opened.
It was my mother.
The moment she entered, her eyes immediately went toward the bathroom. At that point, there was nothing I could do anymore.
Still, I tried to cover myself quickly.
“Mummy, shift na!” I complained awkwardly.
But she didn’t even look away.
“What exactly are you hiding?” she asked calmly. “I’m your mother. All these things mean nothing to me.”
I grabbed my towel and wrapped it around myself before stepping closer.
“So, Mum… what brought you here?”
She looked at me carefully.
“Did someone come here earlier?”
I stared at her for a second before answering.
“Yes. Someone came.”
She explained that she had heard voices earlier but had been too tired to get up from bed.
“It was Rebecca,” I told her. “Your friend.”
My mother didn’t react much.
“So why did she leave without seeing me?” she asked.
“I told her you were still sleeping.”
She nodded slowly, accepting the answer.
“Alright,” she said before leaving my room again.
After finishing my bath, I came outside and picked up my phone once more.
There was a missed call from an unsaved number. At the same time, a WhatsApp notification appeared on my screen.
At first, I assumed it was Christy again.
But when I checked properly, I noticed the display picture carried only one written name.
Rebecca.
Immediately, I knew who it was.
I opened the message quickly.
“Hey fine boy, how are you doing? This is Rebecca. I would like to see you this evening.”
My heart skipped slightly while reading it.
Without thinking too much, I replied immediately.
“Okay ma.”
Almost instantly, my phone began ringing again.
The same number.
I answered quickly.
“Good afternoon, ma.”
Her voice sounded soft and playful from the other side.
“How are you, my boy?” she asked.
“I’m fine, ma.”
I could almost hear her smiling through the phone.
Then she asked the question that made me pause completely.
“Daniel… can we spend time together today? Maybe hang out and talk?”
For a moment, I remained silent.
Why would my mother’s best friend want to hang out with me alone?
A woman close to my mother’s age. Maybe forty-five or thereabout.
The entire thing felt strange… yet exciting at the same time.
Finally, I agreed.
“I’ll come.”
After the call ended, I went into the kitchen where my mother was already preparing food. I stayed beside her, helping quietly.
After some minutes, I casually brought up Rebecca’s name again.
My mother didn’t say much about her. Instead, she looked at me suspiciously.
“Did she tell you anything? Why are you suddenly asking so much about her?”
I laughed softly.
“Nothing serious, Mum. You’ve mentioned her name many times before, but yesterday was the first time I actually saw her.”
My mother nodded.
“She doesn’t stay around here,” she explained. “She only came home for something important and will return once she’s done.”
At that moment, I finally understood why Rebecca looked younger and more beautiful than my mother despite being age mates. She probably lived a completely different lifestyle.
Suddenly, my phone vibrated again on the kitchen table.
It was another WhatsApp message.
This time, it was from Christy.
I opened it immediately.
“Let’s meet again at Dull Hotel around 5 p.m. so we can spend more time together.”
I stared at the message quietly.
Christy wanted to see me.
Rebecca wanted to see me too.
And somehow, deep inside me, I will rather see Rebecca
