CHAPTER 1: A SYMPHONY OF FOG AND SAND

There was an unspoken rule in the port city of Nam Hai, whenever the wind blew in from the sea, it always carried two different scents

Up in the western hills, where French style villas with domed rooftops hid behind ancient pine trees and smooth stone roads winding along steep slopes, the wind carried the fragrance of smoked jasmine tea, the scent of wealth accumulated through generations and a silence so refined it bordered on arrogance

But if one followed the long downhill road toward the east, crossing the grand boulevard that separated two completely different worlds, the wind changed instantly

It became rough and heavy with the salty smell of the sea, the burnt odor of engine oil from rusted tugboats and the bitter scent of sweat from thousands of people struggling every day just to survive in the poor harbor district

This city had no physical borders, yet invisible walls stood everywhere, walls built from class, family background and opportunity

Our story begins in the early autumn of 2025, when the children of those two worlds were still standing at the edge of youth

None of them knew that the seemingly insignificant choices they made today would plant seeds powerful enough to completely reshape their destinies over the next ten years

On one side were those born at the top of the hill, desperately trying to prove themselves beneath the towering shadows of their families

On the other side were wildflowers growing against the wind, people who used charm, practicality and old scars to protect the last fragments of dignity they had left

The lecture hall at Nam Hai International University of Economics was completely full that afternoon

The central air conditioning spread a gentle coolness throughout the room, overpowering the lingering heat of the coastal autumn outside

Soft yellow halogen lights shone directly onto the presentation stage, where Jiang Dao stood confidently

“Our project, Integrated Green Retail Logistics Space, is not simply a bookstore café model,” she said while clicking through the slides with a presentation remote

“It is part of an experiential service chain that will receive legal support and pilot operations from the Jiang Group”

She wore a simple white silk blouse tailored with exceptional precision, paired with smoke gray straight leg trousers

Her long wavy hair swayed gently with every step she took

Jiang Dao possessed the sharp and elegant beauty of a girl raised in luxury, but her eyes carried a cold and disciplined intensity strikingly similar to her father’s, Boss Jiang, the most powerful man at Nam Hai Port and chairman of the Jiang shipping and logistics conglomerate

In the front row, Lin Feng smiled faintly

Dressed neatly in a pale blue shirt, he sat upright with effortless elegance, occasionally jotting notes onto his tablet

Lin Feng was the only son of one of the city’s most prestigious academic families and the vice president of the university’s Finance Club

The seamless combination of Jiang Dao’s management instincts and Lin Feng’s talent for financial strategy had made them the university’s famous golden couple in the eyes of both professors and students

“Outstanding work, Miss Jiang Dao and Mr Lin Feng,” the elderly professor praised with an approving nod

“The financial structure and supply chain feasibility of this proposal are remarkably flawless for a student level project”

Jiang Dao lowered her head politely in thanks before stepping off the stage

Lin Feng immediately stood up, took the tablet from her hands and handed her a bottle of warm water he had already opened for her

“Congratulations,” he said softly, his eyes filled with pride

“Looks like the credit risk contingency table I stayed up all night preparing wasn’t wasted after all”

“Thank you,” Jiang Dao replied with a faint smile

Yet her brows subtly furrowed as she glanced toward the corner of the lecture hall

A middle aged man in a black suit stood there silently

His crew cut and hawk like eyes gave him an intimidating presence

It was Mr Tan, the Jiang family’s longtime driver, house steward and one of her father’s most trusted informants

His appearance here meant that every expression, every score and even every intimate interaction between her and Lin Feng would be reported back to Boss Jiang’s office before sunset

“Your father sent Uncle Tan again?” Lin Feng asked quietly, his voice lowering with unease

He understood better than anyone that academic excellence alone would never be enough to earn approval from the ruthless Boss Jiang

“Mm,” Jiang Dao sighed softly and took a sip of warm water

“Father said he wants to see whether this project can create real value for the harbor, or if it’s just another fantasy built on paper by children who know nothing about the real world”
