ALESSIO

The lower-district slums smelled like cheap oil and desperation. I adjusted the cuff of my tailored suit, feeling the subtle, heavy hum of my titanium left arm. It was engineered to crush bone into powder. To unaugmented humans, I wasn’t just a mafia don. I was an untouchable god.

“Door’s locked, Boss,” David muttered.

“A minor inconvenience.”

I raised my metal hand, wrapped my fingers around the deadbolt from the outside, and flexed. The steel shrieked and shattered.

My temple implant pulsed blue, expanding my hearing a hundredfold. I heard the frantic, terrified panting of an old man hiding in the back room.

And then, I heard a second heartbeat. Steady. Soft.

I stepped into the living room, my men flanking me like shadows. A girl was standing by the couch, looking entirely too delicate for a world built on titanium and blood.

My ocular implant automatically locked onto her, pulling up the biometric feed.

Target Identified. Female. Human.

Heart rate: 112 BPM.

I opened my mouth to deliver a cold threat. But as her wide, expressive eyes locked onto mine, something in my temple implant shrieked.

WARNING: SYSTEM ERROR.

Spike detected in user neural pathways.

ERROR. RE-CALIBRATING.

A violent blare rang out inside my skull. The blue ring on my temple flashed a warning violet. For the first time since my teenage years, my entire cybernetic system completely locked up.

SOPHIA

The front door didn’t just open; it exploded.

I froze by the couch, the glowing screen of the television casting dull shadows across the room. My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t move.

Men in dark, expensive suits flooded the room, but my eyes immediately locked onto the man leading them. He was terrifyingly tall, built like a fortress, with a cold, aristocratic face that belonged on a billboard for the elite upper city.

But it was his left arm that made my blood run cold. It was sleek, dark titanium, catching the dim light of my living room. On his right temple, a circular implant glowed a sharp, brilliant blue.

He was an augmented elite. A monster from the top tier of society.

He stepped toward me, his boots heavy against the floorboards. I trembled, pressing myself back against the couch, terrified he was going to pull a weapon and end my life right here for whatever my father had done.

Instead, he just stopped.

He was staring at me as if he were looking at a ghost. He looked completely frozen, his eyes wide and intense, pinning me to the spot.

ALESSIO

Glitch. Glitch. Glitch.

The internal monitor was beep-beeping loudly in my ears, a frantic, deafening alarm.

She was terrified. I could see the tremor in her hands, the way her chest heaved as she tried to swallow her fear. But looking at her soft, fragile form called to something primal inside me—something my cybernetics were supposed to have burned out years ago.

I want her. She belongs to me.

“Boss?” David’s voice cut through the digital static in my head. He was waiting for the order to tear the house apart.

I forced the system error down, shoving the sudden, suffocating obsession deep into the dark. My men were watching. If they realized a fragile human girl had just brought my multi-million-credit processing system to its knees, I would lose everything.

So, I became a bastard.

I stepped closer until I was inches from her, towering over her small frame. I raised my left hand, my cold, metal fingers gripping her jaw roughly, forcing her face up. My internal alarms screamed at me to pull her against my chest, but I sneered down at her instead.

“Speak, girl,” I barked, my voice cutting through the room like a blade. “What is your name?”

SOPHIA

His fingers were ice-cold.

The titanium of his hand pressed against my jaw, firm and unyielding. Tears pricked the corners of my eyes as the terrifying pressure of his metal grip forced me to look up into his face. He could crush my skull with a single squeeze. He looked so cruel, his voice dripping with pure aristocratic disdain, acting as if touching a regular human like me disgusted him.

“S-Sophia,” I choked out, my whole body shaking as I stared into his cold, dark eyes.

A faint, frantic beep-beep-beep sound echoed from the implant on his temple, the blue light flashing a strange violet color, but I was too paralyzed by fear to understand what it meant. I just wanted him to let me go.

He abruptly dropped his hand, throwing his arm back as if releasing a piece of garbage, cutting off the terrifying warmth of his proximity.

“Where is your bastard of a father, Sophia?” he sneered, looking around the room with pure contempt.

“He’s... he’s not here,” I whispered. My voice trembled violently. I was entirely helpless, completely terrified, but I couldn’t help but try to protect my father.

“Don’t lie to me, you pathetic little thing,” Alessio barked, his voice booming in the small room. He turned to David, not even bothering to look at me anymore. “Her father owes me a debt he can’t pay. Since he’s a coward hiding in the walls, we’re taking her. David, bag her things. She belongs to the Romano syndicate now.”

SOPHIA

“No, please,” I gasped, the tears finally spilling over my cheeks.

The tall man in the suit—David—stepped forward, his face carefully blank, but I could see the pity in his eyes. He didn’t use brute force, but his grip on my arm was firm as he guided me away from the couch.

I looked back at Alessio, desperately hoping for a shred of mercy, but he had already turned his back to me. He stood rigidly by the shattered front door, staring out into the dark, rainy street like a statue made of pure titanium and ice.

My father had abandoned me, and now I was being dragged into the jaws of the city’s most ruthless monsters. I closed my eyes, letting the darkness of the backseat swallow me as David closed the car door.

DAVID

I’ve known Alessio Romano since we were kids bleeding in the gutters of the lower district, long before he had millions of credits worth of military-grade titanium running through his veins. I know how he breathes. I know how he kills.

And I know damn well when he’s lying.

As I escorted the girl, Sophia, down the hallway to pack a bag, I kept my eyes locked on the back of Alessio’s head. He was standing perfectly still—too still. To the rest of the soldiers in the room, he looked like a heartless predator who had just claimed his collateral.

But I could see the violent, erratic pulsing of the implant on his temple. It wasn’t glowing its usual cold, calculating blue. It was flashing a deep, chaotic violet.

And then there was the noise. A faint, frantic beep-beep-beep echo coming from his internal monitors. I hadn’t heard his system glitch like that since the day his parents were murdered.

He had called her a pathetic little thing. He had handled her roughly. He had played the part of the ruthless mafia boss perfectly. But when he thought no one was looking, his titanium left hand was clenched into a fist so tight the metal joints were literally smoking from the pressure.

Alessio hadn’t just taken a hostage to settle a debt.

He had just met the girl who was going to tear his entire empire apart, and the terrifying part was, he already knew it.

“She’s in the car, Boss,” I said quietly, stepping up beside him.

Alessio didn’t look at me. He just checked the cuffs of his suit, his jaw tight. “Good. Let’s go.”
