You stayed anyways

Summary

Four girls move into an off-campus apartment with chipped cabinets, rooftop access, and far too many unresolved issues. Between late-night cooking, tattoo appointments, rooftop parties, and slowly falling apart in front of each other, they become something messier — and more permanent — than roommates. For Max DePalma, love was never supposed to feel safe. But Ruby Holloway keeps showing up anyway. A story about healing badly, loving softly, and building a home out of people who decide to stay.

Authors Note & Summary

When I first started writing this story, I thought it was going to be about romance... And it is.

But somewhere between rooftop conversations, burnt dinners, late-night drives, and girls learning how to stay, it became about something much bigger to me.

This story became about healing in ugly, imperfect ways.

About the people who arrive in your life quietly and change it completely.

About learning that love is not always loud. Sometimes it’s a toothbrush left beside yours. A plate made for you without asking. A hand held gently enough that you realize you are no longer bracing for pain.

These characters grew into real people for me long before I finished their story. They are messy, stubborn, loving, difficult, traumatized, soft, lonely, and deeply human. I wanted them to feel real enough that maybe someone reading would recognize pieces of themselves in them too.

At its heart, this series is about found family. About being known fully and loved anyway. About surviving long enough to become something softer.

And maybe most importantly:about people who stay.

Thank you for reading this story and loving these girls as much as I do.

Moving into a crumbling off-campus apartment with three strangers was never part of Max DePalma’s plan.

Neither was falling in love.

Max likes her life controlled: business major by day, motorcycle by night, emotions permanently locked down. The apartment is supposed to be temporary — just chipped cabinets, huge windows, rooftop access, and people she doesn’t plan on getting attached to.

But then there’s Estella, the soft-hearted writer holding everyone together with sticky notes and quiet loneliness. Imani, the overworked culinary student who loves people through food even when it’s exhausting her alive. Jade, the dirt-covered astrology addict growing herbs on the rooftop and somehow turning the apartment into a home.

And then Ruby Halloway crashes into Max’s life like a match to gasoline.

Ruby is warmth. Patience. Citrus perfume, paint-stained hands and soft smiles that make Max want things she stopped believing she deserved a long time ago.

What starts as awkward flirting and tattoo appointments slowly becomes something far more dangerous: intimacy.

But loving someone is different when survival taught you people leave, hurt you, or both.

As friendships deepen, secrets surface, and the apartment transforms from a random living arrangement into a found family stitched together by late-night dinners, rooftop parties, and quiet acts of care, Max is forced to confront the one thing she’s spent her whole life avoiding:

what happens when someone stays long enough to truly know you?

Told through multiple POVs, this is a story about healing loudly, loving softly, and the terrifying beauty of being known.
