Chapter 1:The Devil in the Rain

The rain fell heavily over the city that night, washing the streets in silver light as the dim glow of streetlamps flickered through the downpour, while the wind carried a coldness that cut through everything it touched.

Ava Carter pulled her thin jacket tighter around her body as she walked quickly along the nearly empty road, balancing a small grocery bag in one hand while carefully stepping around the growing puddles beneath her feet, her thoughts already drifting toward the small apartment she shared with her grandfather, who would no doubt be waiting for her return despite the late hour.

Life had never been easy for her, not since she lost her parents when she was still a child and was left in the care of the only family she had left, a man who had done his best to raise her with dignity despite their constant financial struggles, and even now, years later, she still carried that same responsibility quietly on her shoulders.

She exhaled softly, trying to ignore the heaviness of exhaustion in her body, and whispered to herself that she was only a few minutes away from home, when suddenly the sound of speeding tires cut sharply through the rain-soaked silence.

A black luxury car appeared at the end of the road, moving at an unnatural speed before skidding slightly as it turned the corner and came to an abrupt stop not far from where she stood, causing Ava to freeze instinctively as her grip on the grocery bag tightened without her realizing it.

Before she could make sense of what was happening, three black SUVs followed closely behind, surrounding the luxury car in a tight formation, and in the next moment, the doors of all vehicles flew open almost simultaneously.

Men dressed entirely in black stepped out into the rain, their movements coordinated and deliberate, and even from a distance Ava could see the weapons in their hands glinting under the dim light, sending an immediate warning through her entire body that something dangerous and deeply wrong was unfolding right in front of her.

Her heart began to pound violently as she instinctively stepped back into the shadows near a parked vehicle, pressing herself slightly against the cold metal while trying to stay out of sight, though her eyes remained locked on the scene unfolding only a few meters away.

Then, from the luxury car, a tall man stepped out.

Even through the curtain of rain, there was something undeniably different about him, something that made the entire atmosphere feel heavier the moment he appeared, as though the world itself had shifted to make space for his presence.

He stood completely still despite the pouring rain, his black suit clinging perfectly to his broad frame, and although the water streamed down his face and soaked his hair, there was no urgency in his movements, no panic, no fear—only a chilling calmness that made Ava’s breath catch slightly in her throat.

Dangerous was the only word her mind could form.

One of the armed men stepped forward, raising his gun with a confident smirk as he pointed it directly at the man in the suit, while the others followed his lead and slowly formed a circle around him, cutting off any possible escape.

“So this is where it ends, Ethan Blackwood,” the man said loudly over the sound of the rain, his voice filled with satisfaction as though he had been waiting a long time for this exact moment.

At the mention of the name, something shifted in the air.

The man called Ethan Blackwood did not react immediately, nor did he show any sign of fear or concern, but instead he slowly removed the expensive watch from his wrist and handed it back to one of the bodyguards standing slightly behind him, as though he was simply preparing for something inconvenient rather than life-threatening.

Ava frowned slightly, confusion flickering across her face as she watched him roll up the sleeves of his shirt with slow precision, almost as if he had all the time in the world, despite the fact that he was clearly surrounded by armed men.

The leader of the attackers laughed again, louder this time, and asked mockingly if he had any last words.

Only then did Ethan Blackwood lift his head.

The rain ran down his face, but his expression remained completely unchanged, carved in something colder than confidence, something closer to certainty, and when he finally spoke, his voice carried a quiet authority that did not need to be raised to be dangerous.

“Yes,” he said calmly, pausing just long enough for the tension to build unbearably, before the faintest curve of a smile appeared on his lips.

“Tell your boss he should have sent more men.”

In the next instant, the silence shattered.

Gunfire erupted through the night as bullets cut through the rain, forcing Ava to duck behind the car completely as screams and shouting filled the street, her heart racing so violently she could feel it in her throat while she struggled to process the chaos unfolding just meters away from her hiding place.

Against all logic, she slowly peeked out again, only to see something that made her stomach tighten with disbelief.

Ethan Blackwood was moving.

Not running.

Not hiding.

But advancing.

His movements were sharp and controlled, almost effortless, as though every step he took had already been calculated in advance, and despite the overwhelming number of attackers surrounding him, he moved through them like a shadow that could not be caught.

One man fell.

Then another.

Then another.

The rain mixed with the violence, blurring everything into motion and sound, yet Ethan remained the center of it all, untouched by panic or hesitation, as though fear itself had no place in the world he lived in.

Ava’s breath caught sharply when she noticed one of the attackers slip behind him, raising his gun silently with deadly intent, completely unaware that he had already been seen.

Her body moved before her thoughts could catch up.

“Look out!” she shouted, grabbing a metal pipe from the edge of a nearby construction area and running forward without thinking about the danger, her feet splashing through the water as she closed the distance between herself and the man with the gun.

The attacker turned too late.

The pipe struck his arm with a loud crack, sending the weapon flying into the air, and before he could recover, Ethan had already turned and delivered a powerful strike that sent him collapsing into the ground without hesitation.

Silence fell almost instantly, broken only by the sound of rain pouring relentlessly over the street as the remaining attackers retreated or lay unconscious.

Ava stood there, breathing heavily, her hands still gripping the metal pipe as though she was only now realizing what she had done, while her gaze slowly lifted to meet the man she had just saved.

Ethan Blackwood turned toward her fully for the first time.

Their eyes met in the rain.

And in that moment, something unspoken passed between them—something neither of them understood yet, but something that would refuse to leave.

For the first time in a very long time, Ethan felt something unfamiliar stir within him, not fear, not anger, but curiosity… because the girl standing in front of him did not look away.

She did not tremble.

She did not bow.

And that, more than anything else, made her dangerous.

Neither of them knew it yet, but this was the beginning of something that would change both their lives forever.
