Prologue
In the crowded hotel lobby, just after his press conference, the mayor was rarely alone. That didn’t bother her—patience was essential in her line of work, and she had mastered it. That’s why she was one of the best.
This time, she didn’t have to wait long.
An hour later, the mayor and his wife were deep in private conversation at the far end of the lobby. Perhaps because of this, no one dared to interrupt them.
It was hard to tell whether they discussed personal matters or the ambitions of the newly elected mayor. Nothing could dampen their excitement—not the curious onlookers, the noise, nor the ever-present journalists filming their every move.
Suddenly, the mayor’s wife’s smile twisted into a mask of terror as she spotted a red dot on her husband’s forehead. Before she could scream, the mayor collapsed, dead, onto the floor.
Panic erupted. The crowd screamed and scattered in all directions. The mayor’s relatives sobbed over his body as guards scrambled to locate the source of the shot.
Meanwhile, on the roof across the street, she calmly packed away her sniper rifle. Unhurried, she descended the stairs and slipped out through the building’s back entrance.
A few steps later, her phone rang.
“I have a new job for you. Interested?”
“I’m listening,” she replied.
