Preface

In the near future, technological advances created a choice between two rhythms of life. In the City, the technology is woven into everyday life, reliable and accessible, the pulse is fast, life is dense with data and sleek automation. Drones hover over traffic, smart fridges negotiate with groceries, and the internet is a constant companion. In the Village, an hour away by bus, time moves slower, the connection is choppy, manual tools are still in use, and life still remembers the smell of smoke and soil.

Between these two rhythms live five friends. They call a sleek city tower block home, but when the schedule allows, they trade skyscrapers for porch steps. Wherever they are, they move as a unit: planning errands like tactical ops, dividing snacks, and tackles the obstacles that life throws their way. They first crossed paths at twelve during a chance summer in the village, and quickly realized they were already neighbors back in the City. From that summer on, they settled into their own rhythm, and dubbed themselves the Exploration Squad.

These stories are snapshots of their adventures. Some take place when they were children, when they discovered their families all lived on the same block. Others find them as young adults, navigating the quiet complexities of independence. They’ve learned that while no one has all the answers, five heads (and plenty of shared snacks) figure it out faster. Whether they are debugging a smart system or learning a lost skill in the village, they rely on each other and approach problems together.
