Bzzt bzzt. Bzzt bzzt.

“Tch. So annoying.” Subaru grumbles as he awakens to his cell phone vibrating. ‘Never leave this tech-no thingy in bed again.’ He swears to himself as he picks up his cell, and he presses the home button to see what the hell was going on.3 Unread text messages. “Seriously? From who?” He opens the texts to find the messages came from his lazy older brother. “Excuse me?” Subaru was appalled; the texts were filled with lewd comments. “Damn him.”

“Such a dirty girl you are. A little slut running off to be another guy’s food. Trying to make me squirm with envy, are you?”

“Come here, little girl, come and let me taste your fear and regret as I bite every inch of your sinful, lust-filled body.”

“Give me one reason not to devour you completely as I stimulate your lewd desires with my fangs. Scream for me, dirty girl, let my fangs liberate your cravings for me.”

“What the hell? Wrong sender bastard.” He types out loud. As soon as he sent the text, Subaru flips his phone over. Opening his coffin, ready to toss the phone away. “I did not need to see those. Disgusting.”Bzzt bzzt. “What now?” One new message appeared.

“Damn it, Subaru. Send these to that human, Yui, and delete.”

“Do it yourself! Not your slave.”

“Fuck. So annoying, Subaru-chan. If you value your life, you’ll do as I say.”

“Screw you.”

Subaru turns off his cell and storms out of his room to the bathroom. To wash his eyes of those messages. ‘Damn it, why couldn’t he go bother someone else? Why me? Curse him.’ The mansion itself was calm tonight; no yelling, screams, or the sound of prey running through the halls. Oh, that’s right. The human girl, Yui, had run off again. The triplets were out searching while Reiji remained in his study without a care. As for Shū, who knows? Subaru hadn’t seen him in the last couple of days. Getting random texts from the blond vampire was new. He’d always heard Shū complain about cell phones and wished not to bother with them. Yui had insisted he try. ‘Guess he learned somehow and screwed up.’ Subaru guesses as he washes his face.

After a few minutes, he trudges back up to his room to sleep. After shutting the door behind him, a sharp squeak came from the window. Sighing, he goes to open the window to let a bat inside. The creature flies in and lands on his coffin. A note was attached to its claw in a knot. Subaru walks over, unties the note, and the bat flies out the window. Subaru unravels the note before grumbling:

To one of the arrogant and snooty Bakamakis;

Come, fetch this neet at the bar on Main Street before trouble brews. Not sure how much longer I can endure his drunk ass whining. He’s asking for Su-chan. Jump to it!

P.S. Cute nickname, see you back at school, Su-chan~. Kawaii~.

Y & K Mukami

Subaru crumples the note in his hand. “I’ll kill that sloth myself.” He considers his options. He could go and retrieve or he’ll just leave him there. It’s not like the sun would hurt him, the albino decides to ignore it all and sleep. Tucking himself into his coffin, he drifts off to sleep. However, a small bit of his compassion kept the vampire from sleeping easily.

A short time later, Subaru wakes up reluctantly. He heads out to town in search of his older brother. It was early morning, the sun had risen. Still, luck was on his side; dark clouds hung over the sky, blocking the warm rays of the sun. Subaru makes it to the bar mentioned in the note he had received earlier and looks around. The area was scarce for several blocks. He didn’t see him, so he decided to rely on his scent to lead the way. He walks around the street for a bit until he passes an alleyway, he stops. Shū’s scent was strong here, but he was nowhere to be found. “Did he just make a piss stop and leave? Damn it, how hard is it to find one dang sloth?”

“Not hard, Su-chan.”

“The hell?!” Subaru jumps as Shū appears behind him, draping himself on Subaru’s back.

“You’re late, Su-chan.” Shū mumbles.

“Drop the childish nicknames.” Subaru growls before covering his nose. “You reek of alcohol. How much did you drink?”

Shū exhales, “Why? Are you concerned?”

“Hell no.”

“Oh? Then why are you out here looking for me?” Shū asks. Moving one hand to cup Subaru’s chin to look eye to eye. “That’s so kind of you, Su-chan. Shall I reward you?” He asks as he slips one hand underneath Subaru’s shirt, hugging him from behind.

“What no! Get off me!” Subaru throws Shū off of him, turning to face him after backing away. Shū gazes after him with an empty stare. “The hell’s your problem? I only came because those damn half-breeds wouldn’t stop bothering me about it.”

“So that’s it.” The blond vampire mutters under his breath.

“Hah? Speak up or I’m going home without you.” Shu closes his eyes and turns to exit the alley. Only to lie in the middle of the road, stretching out and sighing loudly. “Oi! Let’s go! It’s daytime Shū. Time to go home and sleep wherever you’d like.”

“It’s fine. I’ll sleep here.” He replies.

Grumbling, Subaru runs his hands through his hair. Staring daggers at some random graffiti on the pub’s wall, it made him angry just looking at the colors. Subaru stops himself from punching a hole in the street art and stomps over to his brother. “Are you coming or not?”

“No.”

“You’d rather get run over than to go home and laze about?”

“Yes.”

Subaru closes his eyes in frustration. Dealing with his apathetic attitude at home or school was fine, the blond would be alright left alone. Here, before morning traffic starts to fill the street, it was concerning. The albino vampire was unsure of what to do next. He squats down next to Shū’s head, poking him in the cheek. “The hell’s wrong with you idiot?” He asks softly. His brother’s response was soft breathing as the sloth drifts off to sleep.

“Oi! You there!” A shout came from the pub. Subaru turns to see a large guy standing at the entrance. “Do you know that man?” Standing, the white-haired vampire nods. “Then pay up! That bastard tried to leave without paying.”

Looking down at Shū, he strides over to the man and bows. “My apologies. If you could send the bill to my butler, Reiji, he’ll sort everything out and give you your money.” Handing the guy a piece of paper with a phone number on it. “My friend.. err.. Raito here, his mind goes everywhere, and you can’t sit him down for one thing. Alcohol is like coffee to him.” Lying through his teeth, he felt a twinge of guilt, but in truth, he didn’t have cash on his person at the moment. The vampire didn’t think he needed to pay anyone since he was just picking up.

“Yeah?” The man from the bar glances at Shū. “He looks like he’s trying to off himself, the loony.”

“Withdrawals will do that.”

“Right. I’ll be calling right away. Don’t you two go anywhere.” The man heads back inside the pub. Quick on his feet, Subaru grabs Shū and disappears. They end up inside the mausoleum near the lake.

“Alright, you owe me one now.” Subaru props Shū onto the stone bench. “Hey, are you listening?”

“Never asked you to do anything.”

Sighing, the younger vampire sits beside his sibling. “Screw it. Why are you acting so weird in the first place? Drinking without a reason, suddenly using your cell and texting crap, not giving a damn about your safety or others who got dragged into this mess today.”

“This coming from a crabby toddler with temper tantrums five times a night?”

“Ugh. Not in the mood for your sass.”

“I’m also not in the mood for your weak compassion.” Silence falls on the two vampires as the tension in the air slowly dies down. The sky remains dark and cloudy, a cool wind blowing inside the stone building slightly helps Shū with his hangover.Bzzt, bzzt.“Turn that blasted thing off. It’s noisy.”

“Shut up,” Subaru mumbles as he pulls his cell out of his pocket. “Looks like she’s been found.”

“Where?”

“Surprise, surprise. Out by an abandoned church near the station.”

“Predictable.”

Subaru hums in agreement. “Ayato said they’ll be dragging her half-dead body back this evening. If she lasts.” He goes to put his phone away when another message catches his attention. It was an image sent from an unknown number. Opening the message, his eyes grows wide at the photo. “Hey, what did you do while you were drinking?”

Shū shrugs. “Dunno, don’t care.”

“Right..” The albino turns off the phone for good. Thinking about washing his eyes out for a second time. He didn’t care who his siblings hung out with in their free time, especially not making out with a tall, handsome member of the half-vampire clan. It’s not his place to say. “You asleep yet?”

“No. My head hurts.”

“That’s on you. But why?”

Shū mutters a few curses before leaning back against the cold stone wall. “Everyone leaves, no one stays.” He whispers quietly.

Subaru strains to hear. “What makes you say that?”

“The prey, bride, she left after choosing me. My friend.. left... it’s not worth it to care about anyone if they stay then leave forever.”

Subaru remains silent for a minute. “Yeah, I know that feeling.”

“No, you don’t. Not like this. Oh, this headache hurts so much.” Shū moves to lie down in Subaru’s lap. “Don’t move, or I’ll toss you into that pond.”

“Fine. Just stay off my crotch.” Mental notes of how heavy Shū was while lying on him. But the relaxed look of the older vampire melted something deep inside. “One more thing.”

“What is it, kid?” One azure eye opens to make eye contact with a pair of crimson eyes.

Subaru felt his throat dry and replies softly. “Tell no one of this. I won’t if you won’t.”

“Even the texts?”

“What texts? I deleted them.”

“Good. Nothing happened tonight. Night.”

“Night.” Subaru, feeling calmer at the sound of Shū’s relaxed breathing. Feeling tired himself, he softly pats his brother until he dozes off as well.
