The Tide That Brought Me Back

The wind coming off the bay was cold.

She barely noticed.

The waves crashed against the rocks below, sending white foam into the darkness. The drop was steep. Far enough that nobody would survive the fall.

Her phone buzzed again.

And again.

And again.

She didn’t look.

For months she had been carrying a weight that seemed impossible to put down. Anxiety followed her through every waking hour. Depression stole the color from days that once felt bright. Every morning felt harder than the last.

Tonight she was tired.

So tired.

She stood at the edge of the overlook, staring into the darkness below.

Then—

“Celina!”

The voice shattered the silence.

Her head snapped around.

A car door slammed.

Footsteps pounded against the pavement.

“Celina!”

Fear filled his voice.

Real fear.

The kind that comes when someone you love might disappear forever.

He ran toward her, his chest burning, his heart pounding louder than the crashing waves below.

“Please!”

His voice broke.

“Please don’t do this.”

Tears blurred her vision.

He reached her and pulled her away from the edge without hesitation.

His arms wrapped around her as though letting go would break him.

“Don’t.”

The word came out as a whisper.

Then another.

“Please don’t.”

The dam inside her finally broke.

Months of pain poured out in uncontrollable sobs.

She buried her face against his chest and cried harder than she ever had before.

And he stayed.

He didn’t judge.

He didn’t tell her to be stronger.

He didn’t offer perfect words.

He simply held her.

When her legs finally gave out, he sank down beside her.

Together they walked to the old dock overlooking the bay.

The moon hung high above them, painting silver trails across the water.

They sat at the edge, their legs swinging gently over the dark waves below.

The night was quiet now.

Peaceful.

His finger hooked around hers.

A small gesture.

A simple reminder.

I’m here.

She looked out at the water.

The tide rolled in and out beneath the moonlight.

Steady.

Patient.

Endless.

For a long time, she watched the waves move across the shore.

Then she finally understood something.

It wasn’t the tide that had almost taken her.

It was the tide that had brought her back.

Back to the dock.

Back to hope.

Back to tomorrow.

Back to the people who loved her.

She leaned her head against his shoulder.

Neither spoke.

They didn’t need to.

The moon reflected across the bay while the tide continued its endless journey beneath them.

And for the first time in a very long time, she was grateful to still be there to see it.
