Chapter 1

Chapter 1: The Girl by the Sea

The town of Seabrook was small enough that everyone knew everyone.

Fishing boats filled the harbor each morning, and the sound of crashing waves echoed through the narrow streets. Tourists often called it a beautiful place.

For nineteen-year-old Lily Carter, it was simply home.

Every morning before sunrise, she walked alone along the beach. The sea was the only place where her thoughts felt quiet.

Lily struggled with anxiety.

Some days her mind raced with worries she couldn’t explain. Some days she felt exhausted even after doing nothing at all. While other people seemed to move through life effortlessly, every small challenge felt like climbing a mountain.

At home, things weren’t much easier.

Lily lived with her parents, her younger brother Ben, and her older sister Chloe.

Ben adored her.

Chloe didn’t.

At twenty-two, Chloe was confident, popular, and seemed to succeed at everything she did. People praised her constantly.

“Lily should be more like Chloe,” relatives often said.

Over time, Chloe began believing she was better than her younger sister.

She rolled her eyes whenever Lily became nervous.

She mocked Lily’s quiet personality.

And whenever Lily received attention for her music or writing, Chloe found a way to ruin the moment.

“Another sad song?” Chloe would laugh.

“Maybe try living in the real world for once.”

The words always hurt.

But Lily rarely argued back.

She simply retreated to her room overlooking the ocean.

There, surrounded by notebooks, unfinished stories, and her old guitar, she could finally breathe.

Music became her escape.

Writing became her voice.

In her stories, girls like her weren’t weak.

They were brave.

One afternoon, Lily sat on a weathered bench near the beach, writing ideas for a new novel.

The wind carried the scent of saltwater through her brown hair.

For the first time all day, she felt calm.

Then she heard a familiar voice.

“Lily Carter. Hiding from the world again?”

She turned around.

Standing a few feet away was Ethan Walker.

Her childhood best friend.

The boy who had protected her from bullies when they were children.

The boy who always noticed when she was struggling.

The boy who never treated her anxiety like a weakness.

Ethan smiled and sat beside her.

Neither of them knew it yet.

But the choices they made that summer would change everything.

And somewhere in the distance, a stranger named Noah Reed was about to arrive in Seabrook, bringing a new chapter into Lily’s life.

Obsidian: He's hilarious. Like, actually. I loved it. You're writing style is great, although you could do with a few less murmurs and mutters. I know it sounds critical, but I have the same problem and I hate it. Overall, it was one of the best stories I've read on here so far. I liked it better than those M...
