Chapter 1 : The Rejection
The full moon glowed high above the Moon Hall, casting silver light over the gathered wolves. Every pair of eyes in the hall was on me, Elara, the weakest omega in the entire pack. My heart pounded so hard I was sure they could hear it. Tonight was supposed to be my eighteenth birthday—the night every wolf discovered their fated mate. But I never expected fate to betray me so cruelly.
I tugged nervously at the edges of my simple white dress, my fingers trembling. My long brown hair fell in soft waves over my shoulders, yet I barely noticed. All I could see was him.
Alpha Kael. The Alpha King. The most powerful wolf in our world. My fated mate. My nightmare.
I had felt the bond form before anyone else could see it—a sudden warmth in my chest, a burning pull straight to him. The connection was undeniable, electric, like a lightning strike in my soul. My knees wobbled, and I had to bite my lip to keep from crying out.
“He’s mine,” I whispered to myself, unable to tear my eyes away.
The murmurs in the hall swelled as Kael stepped forward. His dark eyes swept over the crowd, landing on me. I gasped as the bond throbbed violently in my chest, almost unbearable. This was supposed to be a moment of joy, a moment of honor, a moment of destiny. And yet… something in his expression made the blood drain from my face.
Cold. Detached. Indifferent.
No. My chest tightened. It can’t be.
“I, Alpha Kael of the Nightfang Pack…” His voice rang out, deep and commanding, silencing every whisper. Every pair of eyes now burned into me like molten fire. “Reject Elara as my mate.”
The words shattered me.
I froze. The warmth in my chest snapped, replaced by a jagged pain that cut deeper than I could ever imagine. My knees gave way, and I stumbled forward, grasping at the marble floor for balance. I could hear the gasps and whispers ripple through the hall. Shock, confusion, amusement… even cruelty.
“W-what?” I managed to choke out.
He didn’t look away. His cold gaze pinned me in place, unmoving, merciless.
“You are weak,” he continued, voice echoing with finality. “A weak mate would shame my throne. You are not worthy.”
My throat tightened. Humiliation burned in every corner of the hall. My cheeks flamed red. My friends, my family… they were staring. And I had never felt so small, so exposed, so utterly powerless in my life.
But something inside me refused to break completely. A stubborn spark, tiny yet defiant, whispered: You are more than this.
I lifted my chin, forcing my voice to sound steady even as tears pricked my eyes.
“Then I accept your rejection,” I said. The words were brittle, but I said them anyway. I refused to beg. I refused to cry in front of him. Even if he thought me weak, I would not let him see my despair.
The hall erupted in a mixture of laughter and shocked murmurs. Some of the stronger omegas whispered cruelly, clearly taking pleasure in my humiliation. I wanted to run. I wanted to vanish and never look back.
The bond throbbed violently again, a painful reminder that I had been chosen and discarded. The fire in my chest was not gone—it was transforming, feeding off the rejection, feeding off the shame. A strange tingling ran through my fingers and toes, and I stumbled back toward the hall entrance, feeling dizzy.
I could hear Kael’s steps behind me. Every muscle in my body tensed. But I would not turn to him. I refused.
This is not over, I whispered to myself, gripping the doorframe as I stepped out into the cool night air.
The forest beyond the Moon Hall stretched dark and infinite, bathed in silver moonlight. The scent of pine and earth filled my nostrils, and the whispering of the wind seemed to call my name. My chest ached, but I walked forward, limping slightly, every step heavier than the last.
Somewhere deep in the distance, a wolf howled, the sound both lonely and haunting. I felt it resonate in my chest, and something inside me shifted. Not fear. Not sorrow. Not yet.
Power.
It began as a small warmth, then a faint pulsing energy that made my fingertips tingle. My heart throbbed, not with panic this time, but with something different… something alive.
I stumbled onto a small rise in the forest, looking up at the full moon. Its glow seemed brighter than ever, almost unnatural, casting a silver light over my trembling body. I sank to my knees and rested my hands on the earth, feeling it pulse beneath me.
I had no idea what it meant, only that the fire in my chest, the tingling in my hands, and the cold emptiness left by Alpha Kael’s rejection were all connected. Something had awakened. Something dangerous. Something powerful.
I didn’t yet understand it, but I would.
And when I did… he would regret every word.
I stood slowly, gripping a nearby tree for balance, feeling my heartbeat sync with the rhythm of the forest. My vision blurred with tears and determination. I would not be weak forever.
“I am more than what he says I am,” I whispered into the wind. “I will be stronger. I will rise. And he… he will see me differently.”
The howl echoed again, closer this time, more insistent, almost as if the forest itself was answering my vow. My chest burned with a mixture of pain, rage, and something thrillingly.
