A really great read
"The Iceman's Lament is a good solid science fiction story that I thoroughly enjoyed reading. I loved the tough-talking hardboiled characters, their lives on the harsh and unforgiving planet, the technologies needed for survival and the unknown mystery of the Lights. The plot was complicated enough to sustain the reader's interest. Each character seemed to have a dark or mysterious past, which worked well for this story. The mystery of the Lights was doled out slowly, and not so completely explained that it left no room for thought and wonder by the end. Another good call. I thought the descriptions of EVA activity, spacesuits and driving the ice-hauler were especially convincing and well-written. The realism served to heighten the sense of danger whenever characters were out on the surface. At times the action was really cinematic. I only had one minor niggle: It's clear that the planet Phoedrus orbits another star in our galaxy, but the main character, Tom, seems at one point to think they are 30 million miles (later 20 million miles) from Earth. Most hard-SF readers would realise that 20 or 30 million miles would not even get you out of the inner solar system. Perhaps the author meant 30 light-years, which would allow Phoedrus to orbit any of 18 stars within that distance (and which are actually known to have at least 7 planets). Not a serious enough error to ruin the story, but a distracting annoyance to nerds like me. Overall, a really good read and highly recommended. "

"If you enjoyed The Phoedrus Elevator you will love this. (If you haven't read The Phoedrus Elevator, then please do - it is brilliant and provides the full back story to Tom Kelly). Neither a sequel or a prequel - more of a mid-quel. The action starts quickly and you are soon caught up in the world of Eleanor Station. My only criticism was that it was over too soon. Can't wait for the next installment!"
