Chapter 1:The Hill House

“Ding.”

“Ding… Ding.”

“Did you hear that?”

“Hear what? Stop talking nonsense and get us outta here.”

The class had already started half an hour ago, but a boy named Max suddenly rushed into the room like he was being chased by something unseen. His breath was uneven, his face pale, as if he had just escaped danger.

“Max… where are your manners? You came late and rushed into the classroom without permission!” the teacher said, her voice sharp with anger.

“I am so sorry, ma’am… but I felt like someone was following me on my way here,” Max replied, still catching his breath.

“Come on. Is this another excuse? And you expect me to believe that? Go to your seat. If you’re late again, you will not be allowed into the class.”

“Yes, ma’am… I won’t be late,” Max said quietly as he walked to his seat.

Even though the teacher didn’t believe him, deep down Max was still terrified. He was almost certain that someone—or something—had been following him.

At lunch, his friends gathered around him.

“What was that about, Max? Who do you think was following you?” Mia asked.

Mia was one of Max’s closest friends. She was the only person who always believed him, no matter how strange things sounded. They had grown up together as neighbors since childhood.

“Well… will you believe me if I tell you?” Max asked hesitantly.

“Seriously, Max? When have I ever doubted you?” Mia replied immediately. “Now tell me what’s going on. I know you wouldn’t make up something like that.”

Max hesitated for a moment before speaking.

“So… have you ever heard of the house on the hill behind our school?”

“Not much,” Mia said. “My mom only told me to stay away from it… said it was haunted or something. Why? What about it?”

“A few days ago, I read an article about strange mysteries connected to that house,” Max said. “So I decided to go there early this morning and investigate.”

Mia’s expression changed slightly. “And?”

Max swallowed hard.

“The moment I tried to enter… something felt wrong. Like someone was inside watching me. So I left and decided to come back later. But on my way to school—I heard footsteps behind me.”

He paused.

“And when I turned around… there was no one.”

Mia frowned. “Wait… if you heard footsteps, how could you not see anyone?”

“I know…” Max whispered. “That place… is not normal.”

Before Mia could respond, the bell rang.

They both stood up slowly and walked toward class—but neither of them spoke again.

Not after that.

They walked into class quietly, both still carrying the weight of the strange conversation from lunch.

For a while, everything felt normal again—the usual noise of students settling down, chairs scraping the floor, notebooks opening.

But Mia couldn’t stop thinking about it.

After a few minutes, she leaned slightly toward Max.

“Hey…” she whispered. “What if we ask Sir about that house?”

Max turned to her quickly. “Our literature teacher?”

Mia nodded. “He’s always so calm… and he knows a lot about old places around here. Maybe he’ll know something.”

Max hesitated. “I don’t know, Mia… that place feels like something people don’t talk about for a reason.”

But Mia was already raising her hand.

“Sir?” she called.

The teacher looked up from his desk. He was their favorite literature teacher—young, friendly, always smiling, the kind of teacher students felt safe around.

“Yes, Mia?” he asked warmly.

Mia exchanged a quick glance with Max before speaking.

“Sir… do you know anything about the house on the hill behind the school?”

For a split second, the classroom felt… quieter.

Not completely silent—but different.

The teacher didn’t answer immediately.

His smile faded.

Just a little.

Then a little more.

The warmth in his expression slowly disappeared, like someone had turned down a light inside him.

“…Why are you asking about that house?” he said finally.

His voice was still calm.

But it wasn’t the same calm anymore.

Max straightened in his seat.

Mia felt her confidence crack slightly, but she pushed forward.

“We just heard some things… and we were curious,” she said.

The teacher slowly placed his book down on the desk.

For a moment, he just stared at them.

Not angry.

Not confused.

Just… serious.

Uncomfortably serious.

Then he spoke again, quieter this time.

“You shouldn’t be asking about things like that.”

A cold silence dropped over the room.

Even the other students had stopped moving.

Max felt his stomach tighten.

Because now he was sure of one thing—

This wasn’t just a story.

And whatever was in that house…

people were afraid of it.

The teacher finally looked away and said, almost too softly to hear:

“Some doors are better left unopened…”
