Chapter 1

The water sprinkler we had in our backyard was the true meaning of what freedom felt like; soggy and messed up. We were never free in the Moonlight Pack, Alpha Raden never allowed us to even move a step from our territory to go shopping so it was always boring here. He was cruel and treated us like slaves more than people. We couldn’t even turn rogues because he controlled every aspect of our lives and had a strong bond with other packs like Wildcrest, Silver and Moongold, the most powerful three packs in werewolf history.

I stared in boredom as the little black sprinklers spurted water around our backyard within the glass windows, I felt trapped and I had my little sister and my mother, we were just another normal family in Moonlight. My dad was a former Beta, but he died during the toughest werewolf versus Vampires war, he truly died as a warrior when I was only seven years old. Mom was in pain but like the strong woman she was, she looked out for me and my little sister through our whole lives.

“Honey, come and help me,” mom shouted impatiently and I quickly complied like the obedient daughter I was. I never rebelled in anything; I didn’t know the way how. There was something freeing about how people stood up to their own rights and opinions. Our way of life was difficult as it was, only because of our merciless Alpha.

She was making our favorite chocolate cupcakes that my little sister and I loved, it was a guilty pleasure for us. Something we bonded over.

I helped her out in icing the cupcakes and cutting vegetables for dinner. It was an intensely dark evening since winter was coming and the days were faster. I hated darkness, I was a lover of light, peaceful mornings. Nights were a bad omen for me, I always expected terror and flesh cutting monsters to be out on our land.

“Mom, I’m so bored,” I whined, I never went out of the tiny house we had, I begged to be released. Her warm brown eyes gazed at me with understanding, she was bored too but there was nothing to do about it. It was the Alpha’s orders ever since they released news about dangerous threats.

We only had wolf school and we were restricted from hanging outside of the building unless it was an important pack arrival, where teenagers stared in adoration at the murderers like they were superstars. I had a strong opinion on other werewolf packs and I was the daring one out of all the scared pack members here. We never even had universities because Alpha Raden thought that we didn’t need to be further educated. School was enough apparently.

“Darling, tomorrow is your birthday, that’s something to be excited about, it’s your first shift,” she gushed with watery eyes and I hugged her; I never felt ecstatic because I was scared to death for my first shift, many of my schoolmates told me that their bones broke painfully and their hands twisted to form the claws. It was terrible to me.

I was happy about one thing though; I got to celebrate it with my family. It was one blessing and I hoped to never find my mate in the early shift. I wanted to taste freedom first, freedom to decide on my choices, freedom to have options. I wasn’t ready to share my life with anyone.

My little sister, Evanna, giggled at us with her cute grey eyes and tooth gap, she was only eight years old, she wore the usual yellow dress that she adored. I was once like her until I grew up seeing wars and darkness. I hoped that would never happen to my sister. All I craved for was my family safety and their happiness. I wouldn’t trade them for the world.

I carried her as she squealed and twirled with her in my arms, our eyes cheerful with matching elated grins until it was too soon to tell.

I could feel the start of something bad happening. My vision shifted to the glass window and Evanna hid behind me when I let her down while mom stared at the same view. It was an eerie silence when it began.

The rancid smell of smoke started to get into our house and the blaze of fire slowly cracked our glass doors. Mom stayed beside me, trying to mind-link our Alpha for help because we couldn’t escape through the doors for there was a circular firestorm around the house. I could see it from all the double doors on each side of our house. A part of me was grateful that all of our doors were transparent, so we could quickly scan the severity of the impact.

Who would do that to us? We were a peaceful family, we didn’t have enemies.

The fire was everywhere, it swallowed everything. It crawled up the walls, devoured the sky, turned the night into something feral and unforgiving. I was suffocated by the smoke while the howls cut through the chaos. They came out of the flames like nightmares given flesh. Terrorist werewolves attacked us, their eyes were set on my mother.

“Run!” My mother screamed, the gleams in her eyes were reformed to horror. But it was already too late.

I didn’t think — I needed to move past them to save my mom. Three of them lunged at her, I threw myself at them from behind, grabbing, pulling, clawing at their matted fur, trying to drag them off her. But they didn’t even flinch, it was like fighting a turbulence with bare hands.

“Stop!” I shouted, my voice broke, hands slipping with blood that wasn’t mine.

Terrorist wolves never stopped, they were heartless, stripped off any kinds of mercy. They just kill instantly without a flicker.

I stumbled back, choking on the sight, on the smell, on the reality that I was too late.

My sister’s hand slipped into mine as it trembled against my fingers. I clutched her to me, the wolves tore my mom’s head, and I was helpless with Evanna in my arms. My heart was ripped off of my chest at the sight of her dead body, it was abused and thrown away by three wolves.

My little sister’s frail body was between my arms and I couldn’t shift to heal her, I couldn’t move, so these bastards couldn’t sense me. her eyes looked up at me and changed from scared to lifeless, dimmed and broken. I shouted in pain at the loss of my sister when my pack members let me go, I charged towards the wolves but they pushed me off again with their head making me dizzy.

They didn’t kill me, the burning fire increased and they ran away after they succeeded in killing the only family I had. I screamed, bashing my fists onto the bloody ground. My orbs took in the malicious orange flames and black smoke, I sat down, wanting to burn with my family too. I wanted to be with them up and join my dad. I smiled and let the flames near me touch me.

But someone had to save me at the last minute, it was Alpha Raden, he came inside and lifted me when I fought with him to stay here, he didn’t reply to my wish and rescued me when I didn’t want to be rescued. It was all because of my damn late shift, when I needed it the most, it didn’t happen. Our first shift was always the strongest, most powerful against the chain of royalty. That was why they used the opportunity to train us right after and make us join wars.

“Why?” I accused him and his blue eyes were confused at the first thing I said, any chances of a thank you flew out the window.

Alpha Raden was a powerful Alpha, but he was too much of a strict father to everyone. He had muscles for life and a tall height that towered over me. He owned a stubble and a pointy nose, he was twenty-six years old and no mate yet.

“You can’t die, you have to shift tomorrow,” he growled and I smacked his chest only to be bitten on my wrist by him challenging me to disobey.

“Stand down.” I laid my head down submissively with tears cascading down my eyes.

Alpha took me into a new apartment inside his mansion until he knew what he wanted to do with me tomorrow, but I didn’t care. I was grieving and I wanted to take my life to join them because I had no reason to live anymore.

“Alpha will visit tomorrow, so be on your best behavior,” he commanded and I nodded, afraid to speak.

“What’s his name?” I asked, he might help me with my revenge plan. The thirst of revenge only grew harder.

“Just Alpha with no name.” I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion, never heard of an Alpha who didn’t tell his name to any of his pack. Out of all the studies I did about the packs, I had never heard of him.

He stormed out, tears involuntarily dripped down my dusty cheeks. I cried my heart out when I heard my little sister’s giggles in my ear and when I saw my mother’s smile when she baked with me in my heart. I would find who did this and kill it or them. Whoever it was, I was more than determined to find out, they needed to die a vicious death.

I burst more tears remembering just how my mom wanted to see her daughter shift, she didn’t have her wish, but I knew that she was watching it from up the heavens. I tied my blonde wavy hair and wiped my red greyish eyes. I was going to avenge them, one way or another.

Obsidian: He's hilarious. Like, actually. I loved it. You're writing style is great, although you could do with a few less murmurs and mutters.
