Chapter 1: The Test
The house was quiet.
Not completely quiet.
Nothing with three children ever was.
But it was the peaceful kind of noise.
The kind Elena still wasn't entirely used to.
The sound of cartoons drifted from the living room.
A burst of laughter followed.
Then one of the boys yelled, "That's cheating!"
Another immediately yelled back, "It's not!"
A smile tugged at Elena's lips as she leaned against the bathroom counter.
For a moment she simply listened.
Listened to children being children.
Not scared.
Not walking on eggshells.
Not hiding in their bedrooms.
Just happy.
The realization still hit her sometimes.
Like now.
Like a punch straight to her chest.
Because there had been a time she thought she'd never have this.
A safe home.
A family.
A future.
Yet here she was.
Luna of Blackridge Pack.
Mate to the most powerful alpha she'd ever known.
Living in a house filled with laughter.
And somehow...
Loved.
The bathroom door remained locked.
Not because she needed privacy.
Because if one of the boys saw what she was doing, she'd never hear the end of the questions.
Mom, what are you doing?
Mom, why are you staring at a stick?
Mom, can I see?
Especially Noah.
That child could smell curiosity from three rooms away.
Elena looked down at the pregnancy test resting on the counter.
Her stomach flipped.
She shouldn't be nervous.
But she was.
Terrified.
Because she wanted this.
God, she wanted this.
Maybe too much.
Her fingers curled around the edge of the sink.
Months.
They'd been trying for months.
Not obsessively.
Not tracking every little symptom.
Not turning intimacy into a chore.
Just hoping.
Praying.
Dreaming.
Every month she'd convinced herself not to get excited.
Every month she'd ended up disappointed anyway.
Her chest tightened.
The memory of the miscarriage years ago still hurt.
Still lingered.
Sometimes she could almost convince herself she'd healed from it.
Then moments like this reminded her she hadn't.
Not completely.
A knock sounded on the bathroom door.
Elena jumped.
"Mom?"
Noah.
Of course it was Noah.
She laughed softly.
"What?"
"Are you pooping?"
The laughter escaped before she could stop it.
"Go away."
"That's a yes."
"Go away."
Tiny footsteps retreated.
A pause.
Then—
"Dad! Mom's pooping!"
Elena buried her face in her hands.
Boys.
She loved them.
But boys.
A deep masculine laugh echoed from somewhere down the hallway.
Her heart instantly recognized it.
Her mate.
Just hearing him made something warm unfurl inside her chest.
Safe.
Always safe.
The bond between them had only grown stronger over the last several months.
Stronger.
Deeper.
More real.
Some days she still caught herself staring at him across a room.
Still caught herself wondering how she'd gotten so lucky.
After everything she'd survived.
After everything she'd escaped.
She never thought she'd find someone like him.
Someone patient.
Someone gentle.
Someone who looked at her like she hung the moon.
Another glance at the test.
Her pulse thundered.
Three minutes.
The longest three minutes in human history.
She swore it.
Two pink lines.
One pink line.
Positive.
Negative.
Future.
Heartbreak.
Hope.
Fear.
Everything rested on that tiny plastic stick.
The timer on her phone buzzed.
Elena froze.
For a second she couldn't move.
Couldn't breathe.
Couldn't think.
Then slowly—
Very slowly—
She looked down.
And the world stopped.
Two lines.
Pink.
Clear.
Unmistakable.
Positive.
Her hand flew to her mouth.
"No..."
The word came out as a whisper.
Tears instantly blurred her vision.
"No."
Not because she was upset.
Because she couldn't believe it.
The test shook in her fingers.
Positive.
Positive.
Positive.
Months of trying.
Months of hoping.
And now—
A baby.
A baby.
Her knees nearly gave out.
She sat heavily on the closed toilet lid.
One hand covering her mouth.
The other clutching the test.
A sob escaped her.
Small.
Broken.
Happy.
Overwhelmingly happy.
The door rattled.
"Mom?"
Noah again.
Elena laughed through tears.
"I'm okay."
"Are you sure?"
Another laugh.
A watery one.
"Yes."
"Are you crying?"
Children heard everything.
She wiped at her face.
"Maybe."
"Why?"
How did she explain this?
How did she explain that after years of pain, fear, and loss...
Life had finally given her something beautiful?
The answer came before she could stop it.
"Because I'm happy."
Silence.
Then—
"Oh."
A thoughtful pause.
Then:
"Can I have ice cream?"
Elena burst out laughing.
The timing was perfect.
Absolutely perfect.
The bathroom door suddenly opened.
Her mate stood there.
Tall.
Broad shoulders.
Dark eyes immediately finding hers.
Concern flashed across his face.
"What's wrong?"
His gaze landed on the tears.
Then the pregnancy test.
Everything stopped.
The entire world seemed to freeze.
His eyes widened.
Neither of them spoke.
Neither of them breathed.
For one suspended second they simply stared at each other.
Then his gaze dropped to the test again.
Back to her.
Back to the test.
And Elena saw the exact moment realization hit him.
The exact moment it became real.
His mouth opened.
Closed.
Opened again.
"Elena..."
The emotion in his voice shattered her.
She nodded.
Unable to speak.
Unable to stop crying.
"Positive."
His entire face changed.
Shock.
Disbelief.
Hope.
Joy.
All colliding together.
He crossed the room in two steps.
Pulled her into his arms.
Held her so tightly she could barely breathe.
And for the first time in a very long time—
Elena allowed herself to believe.
Maybe happiness wasn't temporary.
Maybe it wasn't something she had to earn.
Maybe it wasn't waiting to be taken away.
Maybe this time...
It was hers to keep.
Outside the bathroom, three boys continued arguing over cartoons.
Inside, Elena rested her hand against her stomach.
And neither she nor her mate noticed the faint silver glow that briefly flickered beneath her skin.
A glow that disappeared as quickly as it came.
A glow neither of them saw.
A glow that would change everything.
