Prologue

The gunshot shattered the silence of the Shen family mansion.

For a moment, nobody seemed to understand what had happened. Conversation died beneath the crystal chandeliers. Servants froze where they stood. Her brothers stared across the room in stunned disbelief while the echo rolled through polished hallways and marble corridors.

Then pain arrived.

The impact slammed Ruoxi backward into the wall hard enough to knock the breath from her lungs. A burning pressure spread through her chest, followed by a sharp ache that seemed to radiate through her entire body. Dark spots crowded the edges of her vision as her legs threatened to give out beneath her, yet even as panic erupted around the room, her gaze searched for only one person.

“Xinyue...”

The name barely escaped her lips.

Across the room, Shen Xinyue stood motionless amid the chaos. Relief washed through Ruoxi the instant she found her. Her sister wasn’t injured. There was no blood on her clothes, no sign that the bullet had come anywhere near her. For a brief moment, that was enough. Whatever happened next, at least Shen Xinyue was safe.

Then Ruoxi saw the expression.

The change lasted less than a second, so brief it vanished almost as soon as it appeared. A faint curve touched Shen Xinyue’s lips before disappearing beneath widening eyes and trembling fear. Most people would never have noticed it. They would only see the tears beginning to gather, the shock settling across her features, and the fragile vulnerability she had always worn so naturally.

Ruoxi saw both.

The smile.

And the performance that followed it.

Her knees struck the marble floor.

Blood filled her mouth.

Around her, the mansion finally erupted into motion. Someone shouted for help. A servant screamed. Voices overlapped as people rushed forward, their footsteps echoing across the polished stone. The noise blurred together until it became little more than distant static behind the pounding of her slowing heartbeat.

Through it all, her eyes never left Shen Xinyue.

As darkness crept steadily across her vision, memories began falling into place with terrible clarity. Years of accusations. Endless misunderstandings. The growing distance between herself and the people she loved. Every sacrifice she had made believing things would eventually improve. Every attempt to repair relationships that seemed determined to break apart anyway.

One by one, the pieces connected.

The pattern was suddenly impossible to ignore.

The fractures within her family had never appeared naturally. The conflicts had not simply happened. Someone had benefited every time trust disappeared, every time suspicion took root, every time Ruoxi chose to endure another wound rather than fight back. Standing at the center of those moments was the same person she had spent years protecting.

The truth settled over her with devastating certainty.

She had spent so long believing love and loyalty could solve everything that she never stopped to question who was quietly profiting from her suffering. By the time she finally understood what had been happening, blood was spreading across the marble beneath her and the opportunity to change anything had already slipped away.

The world grew colder.

The shouting became distant.

The faces surrounding her blurred into indistinct shapes.

As consciousness slowly slipped from her grasp, only one thought remained clear.

I was such a fool.
