What They Become

Prologue

Four years ago, humanity reached for something it had only dreamed of—not war, not escape, but progress.

Scientists across the world united behind a single mission: to study a mysterious cosmic storm deep in space, an ancient phenomenon believed to have influenced Earth billions of years ago. Many called the mission impossible. Others called it reckless. But for those who believed in discovery, it represented the next great leap for humankind.

The mission was known as the Excelsior Launch.

On the day of launch, millions watched from every corner of the world. Crowds gathered at the launch site, eyes fixed on the towering spacecraft waiting beneath a clear sky. The atmosphere buzzed with anticipation.

Inside the ship, four astronauts prepared for history.

At the center stood Reed Richards, the brilliant scientist who had spent years turning impossible theories into reality. Nearby, Sue Storm calmly checked her equipment, masking her nervousness with focus. Her brother, Johnny Storm, leaned against a console, unusually serious for once. And beside them stood Ben Grimm, a trusted pilot and loyal friend whose steady presence grounded the entire team.

“After today,” Sue said quietly, “there’s no going back.”

Reed nodded. “I know.”

Johnny grinned faintly. “Then let’s make it count.”

Ben checked the final systems and gave a confident nod.

“Everything’s good. Let’s bring this thing home.”

Outside, the countdown reached its final seconds.

Three.

Two.

One.

The engines roared to life.

The spacecraft erupted from the launch pad in a pillar of fire and light, climbing toward the heavens as the crowd erupted into cheers. Humanity had taken another step into the unknown.

As Earth grew smaller beneath them, the crew sat in awe.

“It looks peaceful from up here,” Sue whispered.

“Hard to believe that’s home,” Johnny replied.

Ben stared through the window. “Beautiful, ain’t it?”

But Reed’s attention remained on the instruments.

Something was wrong.

At first, it appeared as a slight distortion in the readings. Then it grew stronger.

“Ben,” Reed said, narrowing his eyes. “You seeing this?”

Ben glanced at the display.

“Yeah. I see it.”

A strange ripple formed around the ship.

Then everything changed.

Without warning, a wave of cosmic radiation surged through space.

Alarms blared.

Red warning lights flooded the cockpit.

“Shielding’s failing!” Ben shouted.

Sue worked frantically at her controls. “Nothing’s responding!”

“Brace yourselves!” Reed yelled.

The storm struck.

It wasn’t lightning or ordinary energy. It felt older—something beyond human understanding. The cosmic wave tore through the spacecraft as if its defenses didn’t exist.

For a moment, reality itself seemed to break apart.

Then darkness swallowed everything.

When the crew awoke, they were no longer the same.

Reed discovered that his body could stretch beyond normal limits, bending and twisting like rubber.

Sue found she could become completely invisible and create powerful force fields.

Johnny felt fire burning beneath his skin, waiting to be unleashed.

And Ben experienced the most dramatic change of all. His body transformed into a massive rock-like form, granting him incredible strength but taking away the appearance he once knew.

The mission returned to Earth carrying four changed individuals.

At first, confusion followed. Scientists searched for answers. The public reacted with fascination and fear.

But everything changed when disaster struck.

Weeks later, an experimental energy reactor outside the city began to fail.

The facility had been designed to provide limitless clean energy, but something went terribly wrong. Warning alarms sounded throughout the complex. Lights flickered. Engineers scrambled through hallways as the reactor core became increasingly unstable.

Inside the Baxter Building, Reed received the emergency alert.

His face immediately turned pale.

“Sue! Johnny! Ben!” he called.

The others rushed into the room.

“What happened?” Sue asked.

Reed pulled up the reactor data.

“The core is destabilizing. If it collapses, half the district could be destroyed.”

The room fell silent.

Johnny’s expression hardened.

“What do we do?”

Reed looked at each of them.

“We stop it.”

Minutes later, the team raced toward the reactor facility.

Smoke rose from the structure like a dark cloud. Emergency vehicles surrounded the area while terrified civilians fled the scene.

The ground trembled beneath their feet.

Reed immediately took command.

“Johnny, handle the upper levels. Sue, focus on evacuations and civilian protection. Ben, support any collapsing structures.”

The team nodded.

No hesitation.

No fear.

Only purpose.

As they entered the disaster zone, chaos erupted around them.

The reactor tower glowed with unstable blue energy.

A support corridor suddenly collapsed.

Reed reacted instantly.

Stretching across the damaged structure, he used his elongated body to hold the corridor together.

“Evacuate the lower levels!” he shouted through the communications system.

Workers rushed past him toward safety.

Meanwhile, Sue moved through the facility helping trapped civilians.

When a section of debris blocked an escape route, she generated a shimmering force field around several workers, shielding them from falling metal and concrete.

A frightened child looked around in confusion.

“Where are we?”

“You’re safe,” Sue said gently. “Keep moving.”

Then a massive explosion tore through part of the reactor.

Flames erupted into the sky.

People screamed.

Panic spread.

And then another flame answered.

Johnny Storm launched himself into the air.

His entire body ignited.

The Human Torch streaked through the smoke like a blazing comet.

Instead of destroying, he protected.

He redirected fire away from civilians and burned through dangerous debris before it could reach the crowd.

“Move!” he shouted. “This way!”

A steel beam broke loose from above.

Johnny intercepted it before it could strike anyone below, melting it apart in midair.

For the first time, people didn’t see fire as something terrifying.

They saw it saving lives.

On the ground, another disaster unfolded.

A damaged overpass began collapsing toward hundreds of trapped civilians.

The crowd froze.

There wasn’t enough time.

Ben Grimm charged forward.

The impact shook the earth.

Concrete and steel crashed downward—

And stopped.

Ben caught the entire structure.

His massive arms trembled beneath the impossible weight.

Dust filled the air.

“Go!” he roared.

The civilians ran.

Families, workers, children—everyone escaped while Ben held the collapsing overpass above them.

Though transformed into something he barely recognized, Ben saved lives without a second thought.

Inside the reactor itself, Reed pushed deeper into the facility.

The unstable core continued to spiral toward catastrophe.

Normal engineers couldn’t reach the damaged systems.

Reed could.

Stretching through narrow maintenance tunnels and impossible angles, he reached critical control panels hidden deep inside the reactor.

Sweat poured down his face as alarms screamed around him.

“Come on,” he muttered.

His fingers raced across the controls.

The reactor fought back.

Energy surged violently through the system.

But Reed refused to quit.

Using every ounce of his intelligence, he rerouted the energy flow and initiated emergency stabilization procedures.

For several terrifying moments, nobody knew if it would work.

Then the reactor’s glow began to fade.

The violent shaking slowed.

The alarms gradually fell silent.

The disaster had been stopped.

Outside, smoke drifted across the evening sky.

Emergency crews cautiously approached the facility.

Nobody could believe what had happened.

A catastrophe that should have claimed thousands of lives had been contained.

Not by machines.

Not by luck.

By four extraordinary people.

Sue protected civilians.

Johnny guided them to safety.

Ben held back destruction.

Reed saved the reactor from within.

Together, they had done the impossible.

Silence settled over the scene.

Then a small voice broke through.

“They saved us.”

A young child stared at the team standing among the wreckage.

Nearby, a firefighter lowered his radio.

“They really did.”

Another person nodded.

“They’re not monsters.”

The words spread through the crowd.

“They’re heroes.”

For the first time since their transformation, the team wasn’t being viewed with fear.

They were being seen for who they truly were.

Heroes.

Yet not everyone felt comfortable.

As reporters flooded the area and cameras pointed toward them, Reed felt unease growing in his chest.

“This isn’t over,” he said quietly.

Johnny blinked.

“What are you talking about? We just saved everybody.”

Reed looked toward the gathering media.

“People saw what we can do. Some will admire us.”

“And some won’t,” Ben finished.

Sue sighed.

“They’re going to be afraid.”

The days that followed proved them right.

News channels covered the story nonstop.

Some praised the team as symbols of hope.

Others questioned whether people with such powers could truly be trusted.

Debates spread across the country.

Were they heroes?

Or potential threats?

The uncertainty weighed heavily on Reed.

One evening, Sue found him alone in his laboratory.

“You’re thinking too much again,” she said.

Reed sighed.

“What if they’re right?”

Sue frowned.

“About what?”

“What if our powers become dangerous? What if we lose control?”

Sue stepped closer.

“We saved lives.”

“But what happens next?”

“What happens next,” she replied, “is that we keep doing the right thing.”

For a moment, Reed simply looked at her.

Then he smiled.

A small smile.

But genuine.

A week later, the team faced the public during a press conference.

Hundreds of reporters filled the room.

Cameras flashed.

Questions came immediately.

“How do we know you won’t become a threat?”

“What guarantees can you offer?”

“Can people like you really be trusted?”

The room buzzed with uncertainty.

Reed stepped forward.

“We understand your concerns,” he said calmly. “What happened to us changed our lives forever. But these abilities do not define who we are.”

The crowd listened.

“We are committed to protecting people. We will use our powers responsibly and for the benefit of humanity.”

The room remained silent for a moment.

Then questions continued.

But something had changed.

For the first time, people were beginning to listen.

The road ahead would not be easy.

There would be challenges.

There would be fear.

There would be enemies.

But the four individuals standing together on that stage understood one thing.

They were stronger together than they could ever be apart.

And somewhere beyond the city’s skyline, strange events were already beginning to unfold.

New mysteries.

New dangers.

New threats waiting in the shadows.

The world had witnessed the birth of heroes.

It simply didn’t know yet how much it would need them.

The age of the Fantastic Four had begun.
