Chapter 1

THE NEW DESK PARTNERS

Amaya was about two seconds away from throwing her computer out the window. It was barely nine in the morning, and her day was already a total disaster. She sat slumped in her chair, rubbing her temples as her fingers flew across the keyboard in a desperate, sweaty race against time. The office network switch had been dropping connections since dawn, and now, their main production server—the literal heart of Aura Tech, the software platform she had poured her soul into—had completely crashed under a sudden wave of user traffic. She was frantically routing data to a backup cloud server, praying the screen wouldn't freeze again, when the heavy door swung open. Amaya didn't even look up until she heard Gina's voice, the HR manager, sounding completely freaked out.

"Amaya, please meet Alexander... from the Vance family. You know, the ones who just bought us out."

Amaya's fingers froze instantly over the keys. Her heart took a hard, sickening dive into her stomach. The family that owned her destiny. She slowly raised her head and felt the air leave her lungs. The guy standing there was easily over six feet tall, dressed in a charcoal suit so sharp and expensive it practically mocked her casual tech office. He didn't look like a trainee; he looked like a king inspecting a conquered castle. As Amaya glared at him with pure, defensive panic, Alexander Vance just smirked down at her, his dark eyes sparkling as if he knew exactly how much power his family's empire held over the future of Aura Tech.

Alexander stepped further into the glass-walled office, the scent of expensive sandalwood cutting through the stale, ozone smell of overworked electronics. He didn't look at Gina; his eyes were locked on Amaya's frantic monitors, watching the red error logs scroll down her terminal screen.

"Packet loss on the main cluster?" Alexander asked, his voice a smooth, low baritone that sounded entirely too calm for a server room on fire. He glanced at his Rolex. "If your latency stays this high for another three minutes, the backup API is going to drop the user authentication database. Then your entire architecture goes dark."

Amaya's jaw tightened. The arrogant suit actually knew how to read a network log.

"I'm aware," Amaya snapped, her fingers flying across her mechanical keyboard, the loud clack-clack-clack filling the tense silence. "And it wouldn't be crashing if your family's transition team hadn't forced a cloud migration at peak traffic hours. So if you'll excuse me, Mr. Vance, I'm trying to save your new investment."

Alexander let out a soft, amused chuckle, leaning against the edge of her desk—completely invading her personal space. "Then by all means, engineer. Show me what you've got."

Amaya blocked out his presence, turning her back on his expensive suit to face her triple-monitor setup. Her eyes locked onto the terminal window where the error logs were still cascading in angry red. Her fingers moved fast and certain across the keys — rerouting, patching, pushing corrections live one after the other without hesitation.

The red alerts blinked out one by one.

The logs finally cleared.Alexander scoffed, a reluctant, clouded compliment slipping past his composure before he could stop it. "Nice job, engineer."

Gina, who had been watching the entire scene with her breath locked tight in her chest, let out a long, loud exhale of pure relief. "Amaya is one of the best we have in this building."

Amaya didn't look up from her keyboard. "I'm just doing my job," she replied, a quiet hint of pride clipping the edge of her voice like a signature. "I was made for this. It's second nature."

"Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a post-mortem incident report to write for the engineering team."

She expected them to turn around and leave. Instead, Alexander didn't budge. He slid his hands into his suit pockets, his gaze sweeping over the empty desk positioned directly opposite hers in the glass cubicle.

"Actually, Amaya, you can skip the written report," Alexander said smoothly. "You can just explain it to me directly."

Amaya blinked, her hand freezing on her mouse. "I'm sorry?"

Gina cleared her throat nervously, stepping forward with an anxious, apologetic smile. "Right, um, that's the other reason we stopped by your desk, Amaya. As part of the acquisition restructuring, the Vance family wants a hands-on evaluation of our core infrastructure. Alexander isn't just supervising from a penthouse downtown."

Gina pointed a trembling finger toward the empty desk right across from Amaya.

"For the next three months, Alexander will be working directly out of this office. He's shadowing you. Starting right now, he is your new desk partner."

Amaya's jaw dropped. She stared from Gina to the empty desk, and finally up to Alexander. He stepped around her workstation, pulling out the ergonomic chair opposite hers, and sat down with effortless grace. She already felt like this entire day was a test of her sanity and it was definitely about to show a positive result because right now, she was completely losing her mind.

As he settled in, his dark eyes traveled from her triple-monitor setup down to the sleek, aluminum nameplate resting right next to her mechanical keyboard. He stopped. His eyebrows shot up in genuine amusement as he read the bold, engraved letters: Amaya Vance.

A slow, highly dangerous smirk spread across his face. He leaned forward, propping his chin on his hand, locking his eyes onto hers. "Well, well. Don't tell me I've inherited a long-lost cousin along with

this infrastructure."

Amaya's blood practically boiled. She had been dealing with the jokes ever since the acquisition news went public, and she wasn't about to take it from the actual heir.

She ripped her corporate ID badge off her lanyard and tossed it onto the desk between them, face up. "We aren't related, Mr. Vance. Not even close. My family is from a completely different line, and I built this platform from scratch. I don't need a famous last name to prove I belong in this room."

Alexander picked up the plastic badge, flipping it between his long fingers, entirely unfazed by her fiery response.

"Relax, Ms. Vance," he murmured, emphasizing her name with a smooth, teasing stroke of his voice. "I didn't say you didn't belong. But looks like we're going to be spending a lot of time together, partner."

Amaya stared at him, a cold dread pooling in her chest. Her quiet, sacred tech sanctuary was officially dead. The billionaire heir who held the entire future of Aura Tech in his hands was sitting less than three feet away, sharing her last name, and she had a terrifying feeling her life was about to get completely turned upside down.

Amaya swallowed hard, staring at him as a hilarious, desperate thought flashed through her mind: the Bible said no weapon fashioned against me shall prosper, but they clearly never mentioned this man.
