Chapter 1

It had been building for months.

Little silences that stretched too long. Words swallowed instead of spoken. Nights where they lay in the same bed but felt an ocean apart.

Daniel had tried to bridge that ocean a hundred times.

He was the kind of man who remembered the way she liked her tea — three minutes steeped, never four.

He left notes in her bag before she went to work, silly doodles or little reminders that he loved her.

When her phone broke, he’d saved for two weeks to surprise her with a new one.

When her landlord threatened to raise the rent, he picked up extra shifts just to help her cover it.

But love, he was learning, was not a ledger. You couldn’t balance it by adding more to your side.

Tonight was just another argument in a long chain of them, but something about it felt final.

“Ama, I don’t know what else you want me to do,” Daniel said, his voice rough with exhaustion. He stood in the middle of her small living room, rain dripping from the edges of his jacket. “Tell me. I’ll do it.”

She sat on the couch, her arms folded, her face turned toward the window where the rain streaked in blurry lines. “It’s not about what you do, Daniel. It’s about how I feel.”

His eyes searched her face. “Then tell me how you feel.”

Ama hesitated. Because the truth was, she didn’t feel much at all anymore. Not the way she should. Not the way he deserved.

“I feel… trapped,” she admitted. “Like I’m carrying something heavy. Like I can’t breathe around you anymore.”

The words cut him deeper than she intended. He ran a hand over his face, pacing a few steps. “I’ve spent a year holding us together. Every time you pulled away, I pulled harder. Every time you shut me out, I waited outside the door. I’ve given you everything I have, Ama.”

Her chest tightened, but she forced herself to keep her voice steady. “I didn’t ask you to.”

That made him stop pacing. His jaw tensed. “No. You didn’t. But I thought you wanted me to.”

Silence swelled between them, heavy and cold.

Daniel stepped closer, kneeling in front of her. His hands found hers, warm and desperate. “Please. Don’t do this. We can fix it. Just tell me what you need from me and I’ll—”

She pulled her hands away. “I don’t want to fix it. I just… I can’t do this anymore.”

For a long moment, he just stared at her. His eyes were red, his breath unsteady. And then, slowly, he stood.

“You’re ending this?”

“Yes.” The word came out quieter than she expected, but it still felt like a hammer between them.

He nodded once, a bitter half-smile pulling at his mouth. “Alright. If that’s what you want.”

She almost expected him to slam the door when he left, but Daniel was never like that. The door closed softly, almost gently, like he was afraid to hurt even the wood.

The rain filled the silence he left behind.

Ama sank back into the couch, staring at the place where he’d been just minutes ago.

She told herself she was free now. But the knot in her chest didn’t feel like freedom.
