CHAPTER ONE - A NEW BEGINNING
I was at a bar. about to open my laprop, when l heard my phone ring.
Since l am eighteen now, l thought l should help find some small job to do. l wanted to make myself useful and at the same time, get used to being more independent.
A few days ago, my family had moved to a new town. My parents had decided that it was time for us to start a new chapter in our lives, and l was supposed to begin universty there as well.
I wasn't exactly excited about it.
There were too many things l was leaving behind.
For the past four years, l had always wanted to become a guitarist like my grandfather. He was the one who introduced me to music. Whenever l played, he would sit nearby and listen, even when l made mistakes.
But after he passed away, everything changed. At the age of fifteen, l had quit music.
My dad tried to persuade me to go back to music classes, but l refused. The memories of my grandfather were everywhere whenever l toughed a guitar.
I could still hear the words he always told me.
"Music speaks to your heart, and it becomes the loudest voice in you when you have something to express. Music can be your peace place."
I remembered those words clearly.
But now, music was no longer my peaceful place. it had become a shadow that needed light.
Whenever l saw a guitar, l remembered him. whenever l heard someone playing, l felt like l was losing him all over again. So l stopped believing in music.
Maybe that was why l didn't want to play anymore.
I sighed and closed my laptop.
" Anyways."l whispered to myself, " l'm now of age, and university life is calling. l should take time to rethink what l want to major in."
"Don!"
I heard my mother's voice from the other room.l turned around.
"You've been seated like that for the past thirty minutes!"
I smiled.
My mom had always been like that, always checking on me, always believing in me and encouraging me to go for what l liked.
"l'm coming, Mum, l replied.
"You'd better hurry because your dad is waiting," she called back.
I stood up and walked towards the door.
As l passed through the living room, l found my mother arranging some of our things.
"By the way,Don, "she said,"we're supposed to visit tour new school today. Don't forget."
"Okay, mum."
"And try to look around the area too. You might find something interesting."
I smiled. l'll try. Mun looked at me for a moment before smiling back.
She had always cared about me, even when l didn't tell what was bothering me. She knew that losing grandpa had affected me deeply.
Sometimes l wondered if she regretted moving us to a new town.
But perhaps this was exactly what l needed, a fresh start.
My dad was already outsidewhen we left.
He was someone who didn't talk much with me. He wasn't the type of father who forced conversations when l didn't feel like talking. He understood that l sometimes preferred silence.
But he cared.
He just showed it differently.
My dad knew how much l had loved grandpa, and he knew that music had become difficult for me after his death. He never forces me baxk into music, although l knew he wished l would play again some day.
"Ready?" he asked as we approached the car.
Yeah.
We got in, and soon we were driving towards my new university.
I watched the town through the window.
Everything looked different.
The streets were unfamiliar. The buildings were unfamiliar. Even the people walking around seemed like strangers.
For the first time in a long time, l felt like l was standing at the beginning of something.
I didn't know what the future had planned for me
Maybe l would make new friends, Maybe l would discover something l had never known about myself.
Or maybe l would finally find a reason to pick up a guitar again.
But l wasn't ready to think about that yet.
When we finally arrived, my dad parked near the entrance.
I stared at the university for a few seconds.
"So this is it, "l said quitely.
My mom smiled.
"Your new beginning. "
I got out of the car and adjusted my bag over my shoulder.
I took a deep breath.
Then walked through the university gates.
I had no idea that this place would change my life.
And l definitely didn't know that one person from my past was about to become part of my future.
Someone l had never truly forgotten.
JACK.
The boy who had been my crush since elementary school.
And somehow, after all these years, l was about to see him again.
For the first time,l thought maybe moving here wasn't such a bad idea after all.
