CHAPTER 1 — The Graves Legacy
The first lesson I learned about love was that it always came with rules.
The second was that rules were never made to protect me.
They were made to control me.
“Valentina.”
My brother’s voice cut through the quiet dining hall like a blade sliding out of its sheath. Calm. Clean. Dangerous in a way that never needed volume.
I didn’t look up immediately. I already knew what this was.
A warning disguised as dinner.
I placed my fork down slowly and lifted my gaze.
Alexander Graves sat at the head of the table like he owned the air in the room. Maybe he did. Everything in this house belonged to him in one way or another..this mansion, the staff, the silence, even me.
“You’re distracted,” he said.
“I’m eating,” I replied softly.
A pause.
That was his way of deciding if I was lying.
Across the table, untouched food sat perfectly arranged in front of me. I hadn’t taken more than two bites. I wasn’t hungry. I never was when he looked at me like that.
“You have the Meridian gala tomorrow,” Alexander continued. “You will not embarrass this family.”
“I won’t.”
Another pause.
This one lasted longer.
Because Alexander never trusted simple answers. Especially mine.
Finally, he leaned back slightly. “And you will stay away from Cole Industries’ representatives.”
My chest tightened before I could stop it.
Cole.
The name didn’t belong in this house. Not in conversations. Not in air. Not in me.
But it always found a way in anyway.
“I don’t deal with business,” I said carefully.
“You exist in it,” he corrected.
That was the problem with Alexander Graves.
He didn’t argue with people.
He rewrote them.
I lowered my eyes again, because looking at him too long always felt like losing something I couldn’t name.
“I understand,” I said.
But he wasn’t finished.
He never was.
“If you see Sebastian Cole,” he added, voice quieter now, “you walk away.”
A silence dropped so heavy it felt physical.
My fingers curled slightly under the table.
Sebastian Cole.
I had never met him.
At least, I wasn’t supposed to have.
“I won’t see him,” I said.
Alexander’s gaze didn’t move.
That was the moment I realized he didn’t believe me.
Not even a little.
“Good,” he said finally. “Because men like him don’t look at women like you without reason.”
Women like you.
Not Valentina.
Not his sister.
Just another possession under his protection.
I stood slowly, pushing my chair back. “If we’re done, I’ll go upstairs.”
“You’ll go to your room,” he corrected immediately.
Not a suggestion.
A boundary.
I nodded once.
Then I left before my face could betray me.
---
My room was too quiet.
That was the first thing I noticed every time I entered it. Not peaceful quiet. Not comforting quiet.
Controlled quiet.
The kind that made you aware you were being watched even when no one was there.
I walked to the window, pulling the curtains aside.
The city lights of New York shimmered far below like a world I was allowed to see but never touch. Everything down there moved freely. Cars. People. Lives.
Mine didn’t.
My phone buzzed on the bed.
A message from an unknown number.
I stared at it for a long second before picking it up.
No preview.
Just one line.
You should listen to your brother.
My breath stopped.
Another message appeared before I could react.
Some men don’t wait for permission.
A cold feeling slid down my spine.
I didn’t type back.
I should have deleted it.
I should have told Alexander.
I should have done anything except stand there reading it again and again like my body already recognized the danger before my mind did.
Instead, I whispered into the empty room,
“Who are you?”
The phone buzzed one last time.
And this time, there was no message.
Just a photo.
A blurred image of a man in a black suit standing in a dim corridor, head slightly turned like he already knew he was being watched.
Even without seeing his face clearly…
Something about him felt like a warning I was already too late to avoid.
My grip tightened on the phone.
Because somehow, I knew one thing with terrifying certainty.
Sebastian Cole had just found me.
And my life had already stopped belonging to me.
New story, whateill happen? Will she always be a prisoner or will be find freedom
