Preface

It had been twenty-three years since I last stood at this door. I told my wife that I was going to leave her and that was it. I had watched my children grow up but I had not contacted them much over the years. My eldest child, my baby girl, is now a doctor. She is now a paediatrician. My son is a computer engineer who just sold his gaming company.

My wife Lisa never remarried. I do not know why. It was not like there was a lack of suitors for her. She was always one of the prettiest women you could find. She was smart and well mannered. She was a catch. My role as a father ended with paying alimony and child support to Lisa. She had raised them single-handedly. I raised my hand to knock on the door but hesitated. I did not know what I would say to her.

I knocked but turned to leave.

“James?” came Lisa’s voice in surprise.

I turned to face her awkwardly.

“Vince told me everything,” she said, coming forward and hugging me. I hadn’t felt that good in a while.

“I’m …,” I began as I fought tears.

“You don’t have to say anything,” she said as her eyes welled up.
