Summary

Vikram Deshmukh is the kind of guy who enters a room and the room doesn't notice. He's been the background character of his own life for thirty years — the roommate with extra printer paper, the friend who remembers everyone's birthday while everyone forgets his, the guy who watches his crush laugh at someone else's joke and thinks, "Yeah, that tracks." He now runs a tiny bakery in a crumbling Pune lane where the tiles are cracked, the board is hand-painted, and the only thing fancier than the butter cookies is the aunty next door who comes every morning specifically to ask him when he's getting married. Tara Nair is the human equivalent of a firecracker wrapped in a salwar kameez. In college, she was the girl who could silence a canteen just by walking in — not because she was trying, but because she was that alive. She laughed too loud, cared too much, and had a dangerous habit of calling people "babe" within five seconds of meeting them. She also had a talent for stealing Vikram's food, calling him at 2 AM for no reason, and making him feel like maybe — just maybe — he wasn't invisible after all. They never dated. They almost did. Repeatedly. Heroically. In the way that two people can orbit each other for an entire college life and never collide because nobody said the thing. Then life happened — the boring, unfair, no-music-playing kind of life. She moved to Bangalore. He stayed in Pune. They promised to stay in touch. They didn't. Not because they stopped caring, but because the world is very, very good at filling silences with everything except the one thing that matters. Seven years later, Tara walks into Vikram's bakery on a rainy Tuesday, looks at him with that same crooked smile, and says: "Remember me..?" He looks at her. Looks at the cake he's icing. Looks back at her. "Ma'am, this is a bakery, not a reunion show." Can you go home to a person you never really left?

⚠️ Author's Warnings

This book contains zero billionaires, zero enemies-to-lovers tropes, and zero dramatic airport scenes.

The male lead is not “brooding” or “dark” — he’s just tired and makes really good cake.

The female lead will make you laugh, cry, and reconsider every relationship decision you’ve ever made — possibly in that order.

Side effects may include: craving vada pav, texting your college friends at 2 AM, and staring at your phone waiting for someone to say the thing they never said.

I cried three times while writing this. Once because the story was sad. Twice because I forgot to save the draft.
